The situation where the red van cut the corner is similar to what happened to me on a test that I failed before - I did not anticipate it and didn't hold back. I passed last week but will continue to watch your videos - very informative!

@@TheYoungWarlock It was for "planning and awareness" - although it wasn't my fault that he cut the corner, it's a large vehicle so you are meant to be aware that they might cut the corner I suppose. It is frustrating but if that happened to me when I was driving alone I might have been hit, so it makes sense.

I struggle with dropping gears when approaching junctions
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
If your car is jolted when coming down gear on approach. It could be you are either lifting off clutch too fast or the car is too fast for your gear selection.
@highvoltage13934 жыл бұрын
Its not the physical gear dropping. Its preparing early to drop gears in time to get 2nd
@highvoltage13934 жыл бұрын
Learn-to-drive Travis e.g in 5th gear on a dual carriageway dropping to 2nd in time for a roundabout

High Voltage sounds like then you need to slow the car down a bit earlier to give you more time to bring the speed down.

Hi approach to junction, which one should do first signal or slow down please let me know.Thank you!
@JamesTravis3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Always check mirrors first then signal and brake on most situations. Occasionally you would would mirrors brake and delay signal if it would confuse others around you, then signal when closer.

HI!, I was wondering, for sharp junctions like this is 2nd gear good for slow and safe turning? I cant imagine downshifting to 1st gear just to take the turn due to the drastic speed decrease, you may find yourself in an awkward situation of when turning if you are a still learner
@JamesTravis2 жыл бұрын
Some junctions are are very narrow and do need 1st gear to be able to control the car, but most will be fine with 2nd gear.
@judywong15585 жыл бұрын
I have a question, when I was driving in a narrow road with a car park beside the road (left hand side) and there is a on coming vehicle, I saw that car coming and I was driving not fast ( 30km/h), and it still have a little bite distance, so I didn’t slow down, but I have already be caution about it, but I still got a fault on this. So in this kind of situation, how can can I let the examiner know that I have already paying attention on it?
@JamesTravis5 жыл бұрын
Say what you are doing. Example, say, I am slowing down for that oncoming vehicle, just in case he does not stop. The examiner will hear what you are doing
@Egirl_Slayer4 жыл бұрын
I failed because of undue hesitation, how do I avoid this? Happens all the time at junctions like T junctions as I stop, look then go when there are no cars. Is this incorrect?
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are waiting to long. Take into account the speed of the road you are about to enter. If the road is 50mph or above, then a big gap to emerge is needed. If the road is 30 mph or less then you probably will be able to emerge with a smaller gap. Hope that helps

Travis Bit stuck as when to signal when driving straight across a junction .Do l have to signal when road opposite is not exactly straight like sort of more over to the right . Do l need to signal right then quickly left ?
@JamesTravis5 жыл бұрын
Umm. Are you asking about cross roads? Or a staggered junction? If the road is in front of you but to the side by a car width ish, and you are crossing over then it’s a crossroad and no signal. If the road in front of you is say 5 car widths or more, then it will be double signal depending on which way you want to go. Such as the road ahead is on your far right, right signal to emerge, followed by a left turn signal.
@janicewilliams16345 жыл бұрын
@@JamesTravis Thankyou Travis Yes it was a crossroad with the road opposite about a car width to the right Was just abit worried weather to signal or not . Cheers .

This is a short video on difficult junctions Difficult junctions to emerge from. Tips and advise kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaPXmKd-iq1nfqc It could be you are approaching to fast to turn into or out of a junction. Try taking them at a slower speed to give yourself more time to think about what is happening and what to do.
@harvey18664 жыл бұрын
Do you just let the clutch do the work on the turn? foot completely off the gas.
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
A lot would depend on the turn. If it’s uphill it would need help with some gas.
@liveforever98884 жыл бұрын
Hello Sir, When you slowed down at 2:15 did you put your foot off the gas pedal and just used the brakes? ive had so far only two driving lessons with a diesel car and i seem to have a clear problem.I seem to usually struggle at junctions and round abouts which have no signs, right before i enter them i always stop the car fully thinking a car will come at any moment and shift to first gear. For example i was driving through a Street with 50 km pre hour allowed and with third gear and as Id approach a round about id try to shift to second gear to slow down the car , i was told i shouldnt shift to second at such a high speed ok i know that know but i then just kept the third gear and used the brakes to completely stop the car at the junction/roundabout line and go back to first gear while waiting if any cars are approaching.I was wondering would it be ok when i approach a junction or a round about should i put the gear to neutral and just use the brakes to slow down the car but keep it going slowly as i enter one of them?

Hello when I approach traffic lights or junctions I am unsure if I have stopped on a really slight uphill road or on a flat road so when I set off sometimes I stall when it is slightly uphill, do you have any tips on how to differentiate whether it's slighty uphill or flat?
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. It could be as you move off you are not thinking what is happening to your car, you could be thinking it’s a flat and lifting up clutch to move and stall. What you need to do is. Firstly try and look ahead of the road to see if it looks like uphill. If you are releasing your handbrake and your feet and pedals are exactly the same as per moving off on a flat, then in the first few seconds just think, is the car moving forward as per normal or is the car not moving forward or even slowly moving forward. Then if this happens, you would need to increase the gas and lift the clutch a couple of mm. this should make your car move without stalling.
@rebeccajones98804 жыл бұрын
@@JamesTravis Thanks sometimes the main issue is not using the handbrake then I try to set gas and bite but when I come off the brake I roll back because it's uphill especially at traffic lights, do you think the best thing to do is always use the handbrake then at least I have the security of not rolling back
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
Right. So it’s the precision of the clutch that you have just talked about. Lots of learners have this problem in the first 25 hours. I would use the handbrake until your clutch has improved more when put under pressure to rush.
@rebeccajones98804 жыл бұрын
@@JamesTravis What do you mean by precision Travis? Also would you recommend this method that if I know it's an uphill junction for certain or if the traffic lights uphill are red to not actually clutch down and stop but instead slow down and change to 1st then off the brake add gas and bring up to bite and hold it still and be ready to move off or edge forward if I'm further behind in the queue
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Jones precision comes with practice. It’s the combination of muscle memory and experience to adjust both feet to suit each situation. If you feel confident to go to 1st in traffic and balance both feet to move forward slowly, then great. But if you are stalling in that situation, then it’s precision with your feet. Being able to adjust under pressure without stalling.
