There are those who seem to have a financial interest in hating on the Z system. I'm not in the pocket of Nikon or any competitor, and I just love what they are doing. I've shot a lot of DSLRs and mirrorless from a lot of companies. The Z bodies and lenses are a dream to create images with. ;-) It's hard to beat these S lenses, the body's sensors, the system durability, design, feel and usability.

Happy to hear that Turner, OR was never reached by the fire. Being here in Salem, many of our friends "had" cabins in the Gates, Mill City and Mehama areas of the Santiam fire. Most have lost their cabins. The most tragic to me is the entire loss of the town of Detroit and the boat docks. Hudson, I am glad that you and your family are safe from the fires. Tomorrow, we are buying personal hygiene products and food to take to the State Fair Grounds for the evacuees. A couple of our friends in South Salem, with barns and acreage have went out to the Fair Grounds and have offered their personal farms for the over flow of people and livestock. The community is coming together to help in any way we can. It is a strange year, to say the least.

Is it possible for you to elaborate on how you can use (on the 14-24 for example) the focal length display to calculate the Hyperfocal distance? I know you cover it roughly at the 4:22 mark but it's still not really clear to me.
@HudsonHenryPhoto2 жыл бұрын
It puts two little marks on the focus distance gage between which you have apparent focus (things appear to be in focus at the distances between those marks). Stop down and the added depth of field causes those marks to move wider apart. To hit hyperfocal at say F11, stop down to F11 and manually focus until the infinity mark on your focus distance gage is just inside the far mark. Now you're at hyperfocal distance for f11. Everything from infinity to as close as possible is going to appear to be in focus. In reality only one precice distance away from you is really focused, but narrower apertures and wider angles allow you to render images that look focused throughout using this technique.

Central California had those fires too. Destroyed communities and vacation areas. It’s almost June 2024 as I watch this and they’re still rebuilding in Shaver Lake, Dinkey Creek, Wishon and more. The Creek Fire of September 2020 burned 300,000 acres and wasn’t declared contained until December 24, 2020. The whole Central Valley had orange skies all day, falling ash and lots of coughing people. Basically, I can feel your family’s pain…. So, I shoot a Z8 and was considering the 70-180 because of price. Now I think I’ll wait and get the 70-200 when it fits my budget more easily. I’d love to take it to the coast of Oregon in June for a photo safari but I think I’ll have to make do with what I have - which involves changing lens periodically. Also considering the 28-400 but it’s out of stock and I’m still on the fence about it. I don’t like the f/8 from 200-400 on that lens. But you get what you pay for! Thanks for the awesome vids and office hours!

No, all of the county sheriffs in Oregon and the FBI have been pleading for people to stop those false rumors. The response has been armed groups of locals refusing to evacuate and 911 dispatchers inundated with antifa and proudboy inquiries when they need to be directing evacuations. A good friend of mine who is a documentary film maker was chased yesterday by guys in a huge truck who threatened to shoot him while he was filming the fire and interviewing evacuees. He's a clean cut dude in a new blue Honda minivan. It's not safe to even go in there thanks to these rumors and it's endangering law enforcement who have to stay longer pleading with people to leave when level 3 hits. I've been tracking some of the fires that threaten old growth forests I've loved since a kid. Many were smoldering for weeks in the high country before the freak dry 70mph easterlies blew them into mass conflagrations. It's simply another extreme weather event that is being politically used to divide our poor country further via rumor mongering and disinformation. To be honest I smell foreign social media influence in all this. It just makes us more and more weak as we divide instead of coming together to solve our growing problems.

@HudsonHenryPhoto4 жыл бұрын
you get the same full frame image, just more enlargability with the denser pixels in good light. In poor light the clean high ISO output of the Z6 can start to compensate and actually overtake the Z7 at about 6400ISO in my usage. The 6 just makes less noise and therefore you can enlarge it's low light images without exacerbating noise. I used the Z7 to test this lens in good light because that high resolution lets you really look at how well the lens resolves details. This one is stellar. The old 70-200 VRII and before really weren't intended for 36+ megapixel sensors. The FL ED and this new S lens are made for 46+ :-)

you said Z50 in the video, can the 70-200 be put on a crop sensor (APSC) camera, and without it cropping in, or does the z50 cause the lens to lose apature, or increase focal length?, like a teleconvertor would?
@HudsonHenryPhoto3 жыл бұрын
No, people have a huge misconception about that. You can always put a fx lens on a dx camera. Think about what changes. It collects the same light, projects the exact same circular image... The dx just crops a smaller rectangle from it. When I slap my 500 and an FTZ on my Z50, it crops a rectangle from that projection that gives me the field of view of a 750 on full frame, making subjects look bigger than full frame without cropping in , but with the same 500mm attributes: aperture, depth of field and everything else. Nothing changes in the way the glass gathers light and projects it into the sensor box. In the dslr days I carried a D850/D500 and one set of fx lenses. Perfect combo. I can't wait for a bad ass D500 like Z camera...

Firstly it’s great the family is ok and we’re the farm livestock ok. secondly the z 70-200mm f2.8 lens seems to be better than latest F mount 70-200mm f2.8 version. I shoot at lot of action and sports events during low light & nighttime under floodlights like a Football, Soccer, Rugby. I found the Nikon z7 & z6 we’re not as fast compared to my Nikon D5 in tracking of athletes or players or vehicles. Did you find any difference between the F Mount Dslr and Mirrorless cameras under similar circumstances.
@HudsonHenryPhoto4 жыл бұрын
With each firmware the Z camera's get better with AF tracking, but Nikon's development seems firmly focused on AF-F mode. It's different than DSLRs with dynamic and Group area modes. I still think you're going to be hard pressed with the 6 and 7 to keep up with the D5 or D500 for sports. The buffer is shallower and the tracking misses more. It's gotten quite good now though in FW 3.1. If you use AF-F and let the camera decide where to focus for scenes where you are panning with the action, but then program the F2 button to activate and deactive a tracking square for the sort of more distant action that moves more in frame as you are more still, you'll get really good results, that's also the mode where face and eye detect kick in and make your job easy when people are the subject. It takes some practice and relearning. Sony's A9 can keep up with the D5 and maybe even best it. Remember this is Sony's fourth round of mirrorless bodies. To see Nikon get so close via firmware in it's first generation and with such better build quality is impressive. The days of optical AF dominance in the Nikon world are quite numbered I'd say. I have very high hopes for an eventual Z8 or 9 or whatever they call it when it comes.
@NikCan664 жыл бұрын
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thanks very much for your salient points was great to see a long time user of the z series cameras. Nice video!! Good to see everything is ok with fires!! Have any thoughts on picking up the D850 or better off with z7? I have many F lenses, is there a big difference in weight? With z adapter ? Thanks Adam
@HudsonHenryPhoto4 жыл бұрын
I really prefer the Z7. It's the viewfinder, viewfinder, veiwfinder. It is smaller and lighter with the FTZ. No doubt. I have links here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks My only hesistation would be for the avid sports and wildlife action shooter. In that case the D500 and D5/6 are still a bit superior in mixed, close and far erratic motion tracking and buffer depth. For everything else, give me a Z camera every time. The 850 feels quite low tech and clunky in my hand now. It's still the best DSLR ever, but the Zs are really that good.

How does the new S lens do in backlight situations. The e fl vr wants to hunt and not focus .

Hmmm, I've not had that problem with the FL ED 2.8. It's great in backlight. You just need to find a good contrast line.

Hudson, I'm trying to figure out why Nikon did not release a 70-400 lens, much more useful lens like the one I've used on my D2Xs for years, and much better for sports too. Why didn't they give us a 70-400?

The "holy trinity" has long been the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses. Now nikon has that for the Z's and it's arguably the best zoom trio yet made by any brand. I've never been a big fan of the 80-400 f mount largely due to its slow focusing and image quality compromises to get such range. This new 70-200 S is so good however, that I'm thinking it may be sharp enough for the new 2X teleconverter they released with it... Aside from that, looking down the roadmap I see S line 100-400 and 200-600s slotted for future release. I'll likely stick with my PF primes on the FTZ for thier speed, sharpness and size, but that ultra zoom is coming over the horizon for those who need it. :)

Can yo make comparison between 70-200/2.8 S and 24-200 ?
@HudsonHenryPhoto4 жыл бұрын
I can't since I haven't shot the 24-200 yet, but I feel really sure that the IQ of the 70-200 will be significantly better. I plan to test the 24-200 in the next few weeks and I'll certainly make some comparisons, but the two lenses are in very different leagues. The 24-200 makes compromises too be all things to the photographer without the option to carry a 24-70 and 70-200. I've always preferred a 70-200 2.8, a 50 1.8 and/or a 24-70 (these days the F4). That said, I hear great things about it and I'm excited to give it a try. :)

Great video as always, i own the first version of this lens it great lens, this new lens look great al well, but i wonder if will effect the battery life of the camera? i understand this lens will work only with Z cameras, and i do not know about the reliability of it since it is got so many electronics features? what do you think..
@HudsonHenryPhoto4 жыл бұрын
Everything built for the Z system is incredibly rugged. I've had my Z7 inundated with salt water and rinsed it and kept shooting. A workshop student had his Z6 fall from a tall tripod into a rocky tide-pool. We rinsed it, unjammed the 24-70 F4's zoom ring and he kept shooting. This lens feels just as solid, maybe more so than the FL ED. I think the Z system is as rugged a mirrorless system as you will find. It's classic Nikon tough. I don't notice any extra battery drain. It's still got excellent battery life. No need to swap batteries shooting all day Kiteboarding action.

Smoke, on of the worst things to expose a Imaging Sensor to, as the stuff will weld itself on. Particularly bad for Mirrorless as the Sensor is constantly exposed, and a lot of Zoom Lenses are inhaling and exhaling constantly

Hudson thanks for the great info, glad to hear that all is well, my wife and I decided we need to get out of South Florida and decided take a car trip down the Oregon Coast to photograph landscape and wildlife. We landed in Portland on Sunday and spent 1 1/2 days at Cannon Beach with planned stops in Newport, Florence and Brandon over the next 7 days. Then all hell erupted, the wildfires, dense smoke, day to night and Fiery orange sky. Never seen anything like it, as you can imagine we had to cut our trip short after 2 days and hightail it back to Fort Lauderdale, very disappointing but we are safe and out of the choking air. We will be replanning this trip and hope to meet you on the trail someday.

I started with the original 80-200 push/pull. Then upgraded to the 70-200 VR G. Are you saying I will enjoy spending more money again? LOL Sounds like I will notice a difference. BTW, we have had severe fires here in Colorado as well. The snow helped a bit. Be safe.

You too LeRoy. Jealous of that snow even if it wiped out my tomatoes and melons... I had the 70-210 push pull before the 80-200, 70-200 VR, 70-200VRII and then the FL ED. The biggest and best change of all was the FL ED from the VRII. Huge, huge improvement. This one is great, but so it's the FL ED. Oh c'mon Ed. . .I can't imagine anyone caring about what YOU can't imagine! You don't like Nikon? That's fine, but nobody cares Ed. . .What I care about is results. . .NOT the brand! Shoot what you like, but don't even tell me what "brand" you used. . .Just show me the results. I'm tired of the back and forth about "brands". . .I'm from Missouri, the "Show Me State". So just show me the results and if they're excellent I'll compliment you. . .No matter what "brand" you used. . .As the great Ansel Adams said, "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it." I'll bet Ansel could have taken one of Hudson's Nikon's out and come back with some great results. . .Yeah, I'll bet he could have!

All that aside, Nikon's not going anywhere. Too valuable a brand with too great a product. The lens design is better because of smart engineering choices and the build quality and UI is just superior as it always has been. I've read a lot of eulogies for Hasselblad too over the last decade and Nikon is a far more valuable brand. Worst case scenario? Major management changes. They aren't about to head into Kodak and Minolta land. They just haven't made adjustments to the 21st century's marketing landscape. We'll wait and see, but I just don't enjoy shooting Sony, Canon or Leica as much and while I do enjoy Fuji, it can't match my Nikons.
