A security car for the guardhouses would be right. But no need to have a one at the main entrance. Check your parking spaces, they are at least twice as big as they should, that is the roadway width I am talking about. Compress it more. think of where the workers go into the building and put the spaces close the entrances. A place as big as this would have a number of entrances. The parking lot would be fenced all around with each lot having its own building entrance guard. More flatbeds, box trailers used more often at places that do stamping or castings. By the way, you do make it look easy. Only wish I could afford the hardware to do something like this, I love cityscapes.

For the big empty spot in the parking lot, you could incorporate a "staging area" for the trucks with loads that have scheduled appointment delivery times that need to be loaded / unloaded. I know as a truck driver, a lot of the industrial parks have a ton of drop trailers, or empties, that sit around waiting to be used. A loading area outdoors in the parking lot would work too, as flatbed steel trailers aren't always loaded inside of the building.

I LOVE the series and the steel mill is a great addition. A steel mill could be a complete module. Morning Sun Books just came out with 2 GREAT books on Bethlehem Steel. Steel mills need either iron ore or pellets to make steel. They also need limestone , coal, and most have their own power plant because they consume a LOT of power . They have special cars for hot metal and slag, plus small ingot cars for the billets. Bethlehem Steel had it own railroad with both standard gauge and 3 foot narrow gauge equipment . I model a small Bethlehem Steel railroad , the Cornwall Railroad. 8 miles long and it hauled the iron ore from the mine, in Cornwall, Pa. to the plant in Lebanon, Pa. Cornwall mine operated continuously for over 212 years. It provide iron for the Revolutionary War and was finally shut down in 1974 after the pit was flooded by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

This whole route is really amazing. I for one don't care if an industry is totally accurate as long as it reasonably close in appearance. and that looks a lot like a steel mill to me. awesome detail work

I worked at American Steel Foundries in Alliance, Ohio for 28 years. We made all the Railroad Castings for the under carriage of the railroad cars. We made Sideframes, Bolsters, Draft Sills, Draw Bars and Couplers. They would make sand cores and bake them and arrange them in flasks and then pour steel into the flask to produce the castings. I worked in the Core Room for 15 yrs. I then transferred to the Yard Dept. where they operated Lift Trucks, Flat Beds and the 35 ton Center Cab Switcher. The guys I worked with and my boss knew I loved trains so one morning they told me they had a surprise for me. I was going to get the opportunity to run the Locomotive. That made my day. We would take scrap loads out of 1 track and then do a run around so we could deliver them to 21 track and then take empties back down. We would pull empty sand cars and replace them with full ones and we would pull filled Box Cars out to the siding and spot them for pickup and replace them with emptycars. And, yes, they did have a guard shack with a guard posted. I just thought this might be interesting to you. My email issquirestrat@live .com. I would like some info on what specs I would need to run Trainz

I have now been watching your videos since the Oil refinery came out. And since then I have loved your style of Trainz route building. Your style is very different from usual in my opinion, you put lot of time into little details, which is great! And the way the route comes up in little pieces build by build is amazing. I've got lot of tips and inspiration from you to my builds. Thanks, and best regards! (Also great build again, can't wait to see the next one!)

Love these vid AM, you've inspired me to save money for a new computer lol. That parking lot could have lanes for semi truck staging for indoor loading of multi axle flat beds and spaces for flat bed/dry van trailer parking. A modern mill of that size would have a lot of truck traffic and also a lot of security (barbwire fences surrounding the entire property, limited access and etc.). Something for you to research the operation.

Amazing work Approach Medium!! A lot of big steel mills I've seen are on the water on one side and city on the other, but don't worry about it as this looks great. I'll get a faster computer, don't worry about too much detail :)

You have 3 blast furnaces, and besides their elevators there are normaly some so called "Coal bridges" with big bunkers underneath, were the Trains are unloaded. Will you built something like that?, it would make it much more realistic :) also cool would be an unloading point for the scrap cars, maybe with an overhead crane, cause every large steel plant needs alot of scrap for the steel making process.

Speaking of details, you might want to put more pickups and SUVs in your parking lots: "Three full-size pickups were still the best-selling vehicles in the United States last year. But the fourth-place spot was claimed for the first time by an SUV, not a sedan. In 2017 the Toyota RAV4 sport ute outsold the Toyota Camry sedan, reigning car-sales champ for the last 15 years." I don't know if you looked at pics of it already, but maybe take some time and look at the US Steel Mill in Lorain, Ohio. That might give you some more 'old and run-down' mill feeling Inspiration. That's a massive complex, though.
