Been there myself, Skip. Sometimes you lose the chase, unfortunately. This still is the best possible fail state, as it's just annoying and everyone was safe at the end of the day. And that's what really matters.

Had it happen to me last year. The aggravating part is not losing the wiper blade, it's the windshield getting scratched even if you turn off the wipers immediately upon noticing.

I got a flat while chasing a few years back. Couldn't get the jack under the car because of mud. Storm coming right at me, but didn't hurt me. Called AAA, waited an hour for a tow truck, which got me going. Many days later I remembered I had been carrying around Fix-a-Flat in the car for 10 freakin years for EXACTLY that scenario and when it happened I forgot I had it.
@AndreWehrle12 күн бұрын
I was in pretty much the same spot you were and likewise didn't like how much rain there was in the RFD. Decided to try my luck on the southern storm probably less than 5 minutes before tornadogenesis. That feature at 2:10 is in my video; if you were northbound on 61 you probably passed my car pulled over on the shoulder about then; with me over on the other side of the highway shooting.

At two minutes and thirty two seconds, Anton certainly called that flat tire with the ease of a pro who, "IYKYK," kind of nonchalant demeanor. Can only imagine how many tires these guys go through in a career of storm chasing? Especially considering all the country, county, unpaved, mud and slush, shit slurried, nuclear bomb testing area, undermaintained, unkept and highly neglected roads, if you may be so bold as to even call some of them roads, that these darecho nomads, hail hooligans and tornado gypsies travel upon. Stay safe out there my weatherly friends.
@Lessinath12 күн бұрын
Well I'm also a storm chaser, even though I don't post videos of it on this account, and this has happened to me before too. Or getting stuck in the mud, if you make the suspicious choice of trusting a dirt road when lots of rain has fallen in the days before. It happens. Sometimes you lose or get stuck, that's a big part of why making sure you are viewing storms from a safe position is so important. Yes, that supercell moving northeast at 25mph mid June on the plains might be easy to avoid or even run circles around if you have a good road network, but if you're two minutes ahead of the tornado getting a compelling video and your tire goes flat, are you still escaping it? Would you want to take the chance of the answer being 'no'? I don't, and I don't recommend anyone else take that risk either.

My dream is to chase storms some day. I don't have the vehicle or the means at this time, someday I hope. I have so much respect for what you guys do, you truly are usung heroes. I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can now, and from now on. This way if i'm ever able to make it happen, I'll have half a foot in the door.
@justinniemeier358112 күн бұрын
My motivation however, It's not for the views or the fame or popularity. If I can contribute to the science, Or help someone along the way impacted by a dangerous storm, make some good friends along the way, those are just wonderful extras. For me it's simply about getting out there and seeing these things with my own eyes that have fascinated me since I was a child, limited to what is available to me on a Smartphone or television screen.
@justinniemeier358112 күн бұрын
But once again, I truly want to say much respect, and very much appreciated the things you and the entire storm chasing community do. Please have a safe 2024 and I wish you many more to come.

Good video, Skip. Did Hank "just show up" or were both of you chasing together on this storm? It was a shame that the storm out-foxed you. . . It reminds me of my lightning hunting in the desert-- I have gotten out-foxed more times than I would care to count.

I had watched the same video of Hank's, which is why my eyes lit up when I saw the video from Skip. Did you see the video concerning working out the speed of one of the Pilger tornadoes? That and the "supercomputer" tornado video, where the meteorologist plugged in meteorological data that a chase team had gathered and the "computer tornado" developed almost exactly the same way as the actual tornado did, are two nerdy but fascinating Hank videos.

"Bummer" on the flat... Been there. If it was a sidewall flat, then the whole tire needs to get replaced. If it's through the treads and not too close to the outer edge, then they just put a plug and/or a patch. It lends more weight to the Scout Motto: "Be Prepared".
