I split the April garden tour into two segments, and this is Part 2. Here is the KZbin link to Part 1: • April 2024 Backyard Ga... . For those of us along the upper SE Texas Gulf Coast spring is pretty much over and our summer is beginning at the end of April and beginning of May. Temperatures are in the 80s during day and 70s at night. Gardens are filled with flowers, pollinators, birds, bugs, and lizards. I love this time of year because everything is doing so well in the garden and we haven't hit 90 degrees yet. I hope you can join me.

This is such a nice time along the Texas Gulf Coast for gardens. It won't be long before our hot and humid summer hits, so we have to enjoy this while we can.

Thank you for your comment! Even though we have high heat and humidity, we still have plants that do well for us and bring in things like hummingbirds, butterflies, and native pollinators like native bees. I love our long growing season here and the plants that do well in it! 😊🦋🐛🌻🌺

When talking about your cardinal climbers, I thought you meant you had 200 to 300 HUMMINGBIRDS a day! 😅 I was about to pack my bags and head to your garden!! You do have a lovely garden!

LOL! My bad. 😂 But during the Sept. hummingbird migration my neighbor and I have counted 50-60 hummingbirds at a time going through our gardens. It is crazy and magical. (We both put up multiple feeders too at that time to draw them in).

My favorite garden tour! I had to laugh because I thought so to! I put out around 30 feeders myself. I can not even begin to count all of the hummingbirds but I know when it gets really hot out, my yard is buzzing with them all chasing each other around. I love them so much to and when they first start arriving they come up to me to let me know they are here. It’s like there saying hi mom I’m back! I have been in search of trying to plant as many flowers for them that I can find. Is there any way you can put the name on the screen as you talk about each one they love? Or write them down under the title please??? That would be so helpful. I have been in search for the firecracker plant because I have heard it is one of there favorites.

Oh, that is just wonderful that they come up to you. So you know you are getting some of the same hummingbirds each year. In my yard they prefer the flowers to the hummingbird feeders, but when you have so many hummingbirds, the feeders are such a wonderful supplemental food source. I think it is fantastic you want to plant plants that attract them to your yard. Once you do, the plants will also attract the tiny bugs/gnats that they eat, besides feeding on the nectar. I don't know if you are up for watching any more videos, but I have done some that specifically are for hummingbirds: kzbin.info/aero/PLlIeREXp9e0BWgNSNEkIuxsqW9lrz5BwK&si=VR3N8dXmbNmNKq6A

That is wonderful! Lantana and salvia are wonderful pollinator attractors (like you mentioned), and having pollinators come in to your veggie garden is most welcome! It sounds like you are going to have wonderful veggie production. 👍😊

I have found that I appreciate vertical vines more and more because I can utilize the planting space better. (I can "get more in"! lol). But I do like looking higher and not just at ground level.

Oh, you are giving me so many ideas! I have all of my fennel in pots. Does it do well in the ground? Is it perennial? Does it make it through the winter? I never thought to just let my Pipevine grow across the ground. I’m going to be trying these things. What a wonderful video!
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 2 ай бұрын
I have had my fennel in the ground for 2 years now, and this will be its third summer. It does very well for me and is a perennial. It reseeds too, so it has been expanding its footprint. I went through this sprung and pulled a lot of the small plants because I didn't want it taking over the whole bed. It is bronze fennel and it is in a sunny spot, but does get some shade in the day from my trees. I absolutely LOVE my White-veined Dutchman's pipevine ground cover (aristilochia fimbriata). It needs some shade. I also have Wooly Dutchman's pipevine next to it, but the female butterflies prefer laying their eggs on the ground cover. Last year I only had two plants and they got eaten to the ground multiple times during the year, but came back quickly. This year I had 10 plants and the female butterflies just laid more eggs and the entire ground cover just got eaten to the ground. I had to move 10-15 caterpillars to the Wooly dutchman's Pipevine so they could continue to grow. 👍😊🐛

P.S. yes, the fennel comes back beautifully so far for me after our freezing winters. The last couple of years we have had some unusually cold blasts for us. (My outdoor sensor registered 19.7 degrees two days this past January.)

@@ButterfliesNBirdsThank you so much. I am looking forward to planting my potted bronze fennels in the ground. I think they will be happy to be out of their pots. I also have 3 Wooly Dutchman’s pipevines I am just going to plant in the ground too. 🩵💛🩵💛🩵💛

I think your bronze fennel will like being in the ground too. I have a lot planted all together so the caterpillars can hide in the numerous and large volume fennel leaves. So far the predators haven't found them and I am finding their chrysalis all over the yard, on our house, and on other sturdy stem plants. I don't know how long it will last though. Predators are pretty crafty and sneaky. 😊🐛

Lol - no, this is how our yard usually looks. My husband mows and edges once a week and I try and keep up with weeds, sticks, etc. all throughout the week. Thank you and yes, I love it in the garden.😊 Our springtime is nice, but our summers are so hot and humid that I have to go out very early and work otherwise it is just too brutally hot (36 - 37 degrees Celsius). I looked at your channel and you are from Wales! Your cottage and start to your gardens is beautiful!
