Title: Genetic Lipoprotein Disorders and Cardiovascular disease: Diagnosis, Treatment and Areas of Uncertainty
Speaker: Dr. Jacques Genest, MD FRCP(C) Cardiologist Professor, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center
MUHC Medical Grand Rounds Tuesday, 4/30/2024 at 12h00-13h00
Educational objectives:
•Review the diagnosis, genetic basis and treatment of genetic lipoprotein disorders associated with cardiovascular disease.
•Explore areas of uncertainty in the usefulness of biomarkers, sex differences in treatment and overall cardiovascular risk
•Introduce novel therapeutics, especially monoclonal antibodies and RNA gene silencing strategies and their potential role in a cost-constrained medical system
Biosketch of Dr. Jacques Genest, MD FRCP(C) Cardiologist:
Jacques Genest obtained his MD at McGill University and did a residency in Internal Medicine at McGill in Montreal, Canada. He then did a cardiology fellowship at Tufts University in Boston and Post-doctoral studies in Boston in lipoprotein metabolism and molecular genetics at Tufts University. He is Professor of Medicine and holds the McGill/Novartis Chair in Medicine at McGill and was Head of Cardiology at McGill University. His research focuses on the metabolic and genetic basis of premature coronary artery disease and the role of high density lipoproteins in atherosclerosis. His research team has contributed to the identification of several genes involved in the metabolism of HDL. He has been involved in the design, steering Committee and running several large clinical trials. He has published over 380 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals such as Nature Genetics, Circulation, Circulation Research, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Biological Chemistry, European Heart Journal and The Lancet and has written 18 book chapters. For the past 25 years, he has participated in the elaboration of Canadian Cholesterol Guidelines.
