April Back Garden Tour! Lots of Changes in My Zone 9b Backyard! :: Dig, Plant, Water, Repeat

Hi Janey, rose geek here. I don’t think you planted the rose deep enough. When I watched you plant her, I thought it was too near the surface. You had a lot of roots near where you planted her. Root competition will cause a roses to struggle. But planting too high and a dry hard soil will also make it difficult for it to bed in. If you plant early spring. It gives it a longer season to get rooted before winter comes along. The winter won’t affect a rose where you are. We have wet wet wet winters here in Great Britain and they love the cold wetness here. Personally I’d buy a new plant. Or contact David Austen they will send you a new one of you send them a photo. Plant further forward in that bed but first dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Then amend your soil with a good soil/compost, at least 3”. Very least. Add manure to that. Mix it in. Sprinkle ground and the roots with michorizal fungi and then water a good gallon. Water once a week counting to 20 slowly. Is about right. Far better for plants than to give daily water. They’ll be far more likely to root further down looking for the water rather than staying surface level because of daily watering. The soil needs to drench down at least 6-8” With your heat you may need to do that twice a week until it’s established. Probably next season. Don’t feed if for this season. Let it go deep searching for what it needs. Over caring with nutrients and daily watering stops the rose burying itself. Maybe also give it a bit of heat protection for the first few weeks whilst it gets over planting. Your temps are far higher than ours so that’s like us planting in summer for your spring. We’d provide some temp shade while it establishes. Then next spring add a good basic overall feed like fish blood bone. Once this rose gets going she’s rampant. A stunning Rose. Contact DA and get them to send you a replacement. They’re very good.

Your garden is lovely. I would find it helpful if you could mention what kind of supports you planted your vines on, and whether they are free-standing or attached to the house/fence, and whether they are wood, iron, etc. What to attach vines to can be tricky and so your advice is welcome. Your garden is beautiful. I love your side yard. Re: your Gertrude Jekyll rose - they're gorgeous. It's the rose responsible for getting me into gardening (more than the basics) 25 years ago. My first GJ was gorgeous -big and vibrant. When I began a new garden at a new house 8 years ago, I initially had trouble even finding the Gertrude Jekyll. I finally did and have it in a nice sunny place in the garden - it's doing ok but has remained very small and not sure why. Next I ordered a climber and it died. David Austin's warranty is awesome and they sent a replacement the next year - it died. Then I thought it was my site and left it empty. Unexpectedly the gentleman who helps me with some maintenance, planted a cutting there (of another DA rose) and it's taken off. Bottom line I think they're temperamental. I have tried over time at least 40 DA roses and this has been one of the more challenging ones. It's worth the challenge tho cuz it's so gorgeous. By now, you should be seeing more green I'd think. Claim on your warranty and at the very least get on the list to get a new one for next year to plant as a bare root. So disappointing when they dont perform.

Hello beautiful yard! I have a purple queen bougainvillea. I never fertilize it and I hardly ever water it and it blooms all summer and fall, full of blooms. The second year that I put it in I noticed it had a lot of green leaves but no blooms.. I did some research and found out they don’t like much water as far as the blooms are concerned so I took the drip out and deep water it once a month in the middle of summer. From then on it has been solid blooms. I notice this year I have a lot of green growth but not much blooms and that’s because of how much rain we received this year. I have clay soil, it hangs on to the moisture for awhile. This will be its fifth year and grown on the south side of my fence.

I have a leonardo da vinci rose that did the same thing as your Gertrude jeykll, the thing is it's still alive, so I decided to put it where there is more sun, and its doing better now... The rose might have been demanding more sun...

Your friend was correct in telling you to take a wide angle shot of the yard. The Gertrude Jekyll may be suffering in that spot due to too much shade or maybe the soil? Good thing you get a warranty from David Austin!

Maybe a slug or snail is munching on your Supertunia? Janey, I have a potted Rose (3rd bloom year) and moved it about 7 feet into morning/all day sun and it just picked up! Last year it didn't bloom much and was in that spot that got 3 hours less sun! Of course, yours is in the ground, so ... I have another in the ground in the front that only gets 5 or 6 hours Sun in Summer. Doesn't do so well, because of a Lilac and climbing rose shade! I truly hope that yours is only a Sun problem. A 3rd Momorial Rose (same age) in the front never even came up😢😢.

Beautiful...you are so gifted.... have you considered using ornamental grasses around the pool or somewhere in the backyard or potted or planted palm trees.... it would be so nice when the wind blows to have the swaying effect and movement and they both give off such tropical vibes.... not sure if you have them in your backyard already...but I don't remember seeing them.... we used to have an inground pool and really enjoyed looking at the grasses when we were in the pool.

About you rose. If you rose struggle - need maybe add black -cow manure and food for rose ., and last things. Add pine tree nuggets - sometimes it’s help for my rose Zlata florida
