Mel was remarkably technically correct with her translation of "niwatori", and not just because she translated it straight. In England, a lot of people keep a small number of chickens in what an American would call their "yard" (or lawn when they go to mow it). But in England, it's called a "garden" even if you aren't growing specifically planted plants the way it's implied in American English. So technically in England a chicken could be accurately called a "garden bird".
