If Windows Vista did have an option to enable the classic logon prompt, it's probable that they might still allow fast user switching when the classic logon prompt is enabled, which Windows XP doesn't.

I could immediately tell it was fake, as one of the major things in Windows Vista was the complete redesign of the logon/security system. In Windows XP, msgina.dll handled all UI, and a large amount of the user init stuff, and while it was common to replace msgina, there could only ever be one login system. In Windows Vista, logonui handles all UI, logon, and user init, and allows credential providers to add tiles and controls to the login screen, and perform authentication checking. All the rest of it is handled automatically by logonui. Additionally, multiple credential providers can be installed and active at once.

Windows Vista to 8.1 also used authui.dll for the actual UI to render. Windows 10 and 11 still use it for some strings and the "Slide to shut down" screen but most of the UI is done by Windows.UI.Logon.dll and the Windows.UI.Logon directory in SystemResources.

The banner and gradient line I just screenshoted from the Windows Vista shutdown dialog. I got the desktop wallpaper from C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\img24.jpg, and the logon wallpaper from C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll. To get the moving gradient line (which Windows Vista doesn't have for real), I took a screenshot of the static gradient line from the shutdown dialogue, then duplicated the width to twice as wide side-by-side, then made 20 copies of it and cropped each one to single-width while moving the crop along each time, then assembled the images into an animated GIF.

@@World_of_OSes What if you make it use real system resources? I believe everything you need would be in those two DLL files I mentioned, as well as winlogon.dll.mui for strings. I also recommend using the Tahoma font because that's what XP used. Anyway, this logon screen looks pretty well made and would help those who transform their Windows setups to XP or older.

2:40 wrong, Vista features a black background behind the login window. if you minimise the logon screen you will see

Enabling the classic logon prompt changes the logon background to the LogonUI wallpaper. Just like how in Windows XP enabling the classic logon prompt changes the logon background to blue (it's usually black when the Welcome screen is enabled).

the blue comes from the luna theme in Windows XP while in Vista the basic theme has a black background
