👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I have learned so much from you, Ashley. I am 70 years old and have a botany degree, seed analyst training and am a retired health inspector (BS in Environmental Health). My mantra has always been that I want to continue learning for my entire life. You would not believe how much has changed just in evolutionary science since I studied it in the 80's. I hardly recognize the biology and chemistry from those years. Time and information move on. There will always be haters that can't stand to have their static views challenged by new ideas. Rock on sister, you are amazing and blazing a trail for all of gardeners who dabble and look for science-based information to guide our quest for a successful bountiful garden. Respectfully, from US zone 9.

I think a lot of people feel attacked if the science doesn’t support the thing they’ve been doing for x years. But that’s the beauty of sharing, because maybe there is something extra, or different, that they do, that the study didn’t, and maybe that’s the key to making that certain thing work!

I have the same type of greenhouse. I purchased it for 75.00 from my neighbour. They had it for several years. It is holding up nicely. The only thing in the summer it gets really hot inside. I put plastic corrugated board into the ceiling one side for my sun sensitive plants. I have a fan running all summer. I shut the door at night to keep the bears and raccoons out at night.

When you can explain complicated things at a 3rd grade level, the people (that matter) respect you more. So sticky-uppy in the context makes perfect sense even if its not a word. It takes longer for the normal people's eyes to glaze over that way :P On the science thing and especially with plants.. they are highly dependent on the weather and we haven't even perfected weather prediction. With centuries of trying lol. People use observations to create rules, and then those rules must evolve with further observations. I already have to restart oregano in garden. It definitely didn't germinate. Already letting my tomatoes chill outside on warm days. I have to move it to follow the sun through the day.. its a whole thing lol. Didn't get any snow but it hit right at freezing last night so hopefully none of my seedlings die.

I use walls-o-water, cozy coats too...I find the tomatoes & peppers grow really well but then it's a hard thing to lift them off the plants when it gets warm. They cook the plants, and since they're full of water I have to get help to lift them off or the squish the plants. I do have a 5 gallon bucket with end cut out, fill them around the bucket but it doesn't help when I'm lifting it off. Its snowing here too...sick of it.

As for science, knoledge in the garden every location is different, so adding different factors like soil how much rain you get how much sun you get every factor changes to what works and science needs to change as our atmosphere is constantly changing. True that methods and applications work it's finding what works in your location... just a rambling thought...lol

I’m not sure what kind of greenhouse you’ve got but I just saw a discussion that the roof panels in a similar model may be prone to getting algae growing inside them. Then they turn opaque. Maybe there’s a way to prevent the water from getting inside the panels with insulating tape or something? But it’s beautiful and I would love to have one. It’s about to snow here in Finland, too.

I'm in zone 6...not sure if it's 6a or 6b, because I haven't looked it up yet, but anyway, I decided I would try winter sowing this year and it was sorta kinda a disaster because of all the warm weather and then sudden freezes. Of course the seeds germinated during the warm days and even though they are supposedly frost hardy varieties, many couldn't deal with the cold snaps. I did bring the survivors indoors because of 70mph wind gusts. I thought I had things well anchored, but several blew away to who knows where haha. I started a whole bunch of new seeds indoors under lights, and now have lots of new babies. However I just discovered today that tiny green caterpillars are eating them! NOOOOOOOOO! Ah the joys of gardening. I am sure they came in from the jugs I had outdoors initially. Sigh. I've been gardening all my 50+ years of life, but that was super easy because it was in zone 8. I'm having to learn all the nuances of a new zone with harsh elements I never had to contend with before, including vast swarms of locusts. I just wanna grow some dang veggies and maybe some lavender! WHY does it have to be so difficult here? Anyhoo, love your channel. :)
