Hi Tom, thanks for the great video. Love your patience and reasonable responses regarding some of the comments too. I would have given anything for one of these bikes as a 17 year old. It's probably a good job that I was already on to bigger bikes when they appeared. However, I've just found a desrestricted 2004 Tuono 125cc (Rotax 122) for my 17 year old son. It has the VHSB34 on it so the information you have provided will come in very handy. All the best.

Hi Tom this Andi from Germany 🇩🇪 very nice video again you have done 👍👍👍 great job 👏 ! But remember the spark plug BR8ES and BR9EG is for the restricted 80km/m and 11kW version of the Aprilia RS 125 the non restricted 22kW needs the BR10EG!!! If you drive wide open with the smaller heat rated spark plugs you might burn a hole in the piston. Continue with your great videos! You doing a good job 👍!!!

Hello and thanks for the video! I have the 1998 model of the rs 125, the racing replica extrema model, with the same 34mm carb. I was just wondering where you get your parts from? I cant seem to really find any spare parts online and i need to do some tuning on my carb as it completely loses power on full throttle and cant go past 9000rpm without bogging out and it does the same mid range bogging as yours did when it was running too rich. The previous owner removed the original air filter box and fitted a completely open K&N filter, and i suspect that he just put on a way too big main jet because it is running really rich right now.

Hello Tom, I think that the correct procedure for the plug chop is grabbing the clutch lever and stopping the engine with the red switch, and while the engine is at 0 rpm then stopping the bike and checking the plug. When engine is not stopped immediately, as in the video, the reading is not accurate.

Can you confirm or deny but I want to be sure? To adjust idle RPM and AFR you use bolts at the side od carburetor, and than, after test drive you adjust AFR using main jet and needle position acording to the colour of spark plug and exhaust gases?

Tom, I have so many things I want to tell you about your RS in general after watching a few episodes, but honestly I'd rather start by two things: 1. The mod you did to the GoPro for the audio is better indeed than the GoPro Mod, the Mod has a very weird sound profile capture, it does not really pick up in the same strength the same frequencies the human ear does. Yet, after a LOT of testing on this particular subject, I 100% guarantee to you that what works better is a full body thick sponge case for the GoPro. Amazon is flooded with them. Don't cheap out too much, they're fragile in nature, but also don't spend 10€ each like I do because of the same reason. 2. I find that based on what you show us on the videos, the commuting and so, your tune of the bike in general is really opposite to what you want. You're getting a lot of things done that increase top range performance in clear detriment of the medium and lower range. The exhaust is a good example. For how you ride around, the stock one would suit you much better. This carburetor follows the same line. I'm not here for long enough to really know if you've explained these topics in a video, I'm guilty of having skipped bits here and there. So maybe there's a reason for it? Either way, I like both how you do your content and how you approach the tuning on the bike. Love how you dig into technical details and so on. Keep it going
@tomdidit4216
@tomdidit4216 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for the large comment. 1. I have seen this mod tested on the GoPro. Taking onboard your advice, I will be sure to buy the more expensive foam covers from Amazon👍. 2. I agree. It’s very hard to tune these 125 bikes to perform well throughout low, mid & high rpm’s. The work I have done has noticeably increased the top end performance. As the Aprilia is in such good condition I plan to stop riding it around the city as start using it for longer more leisurely trips (as intended). My Honda will be used around the city👍 Thanks again for leaving a comment and sharing your advice. Cheers Tom

I have a similar problem to the one you had in the video, specifically the part where the bike shuts off when accelerating. In my case it is a Yamaha TZR 125, when I accelerate to high speed the motorcycle dies to the point of almost turning off and in some cases it turns off, according to your experience do you have any idea why that happens?
@tomdidit4216
@tomdidit4216 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chus I’m my case it was the incorrect carb needle causing a rich condition in the midrange. The larger needle has leaned out the midrange on my bike, which has greatly improved the midrange. In your case: Maybe try adjusting the needle position. Moving the needle up, by lowering the C-clip will (safely) richen the mixture. Go for a test ride and see if there is any improvement. If it is worse, then try to lean the mixture bu adjusting the needle in the opposite direction. Good luck! T

Hi Tom, Your bike really seems to fly and looks really great. Why do you prefer a 125 machine, is it because of good fuel consumption and generally reasonable cost to run/own? Greeting Ian Firstly thank you for your message - and my apologies for the late response. I have been away for a few days. The de-restricted Aprilia really does fly for a 125. Luckily I found this bike was well looked after with low KMs. I own this bike because I’m reliving my youth. These were the “bike to own” when I was 16-17 years old in the UK. Plus I’ve only owned 2 strokes….😎 These bikes were developed on the track and honestly, does not suit my inner city traffic commuting. That said, I still love it. I do plan on taking a few road trips around Australia one day, but it’ll have to wait until I get a sports tourer (or something bigger). Are you a bike rider? Cheers Tom👍

Change the 30hp cdi to the 15 hp cdi. The problem will almost disapear. They did this to get better emissions. This is since the rotax 122 engines. The 123 does not have this problem at all, because it has a different cdi system. The cdi should be located under the passenger seat.

@tomdidit4216

In my case, the problem you describe was caused by a rich condition (too much fuel in midrange) as the needle controls the midrange, I use a thicker needle to lean the mixture. First try adjusting the clip on your existing needle to see is the issue improves. You may need to change the needle.

Hi! We started to tune with your setup. Fixed the needle valve, closes correctly, but with the 160 main jet the air screw did nothing. We put back the 148 but it still does nothing. When we close the fuel tap after a minute it starts to run lean, then it revs with the air screw. Now, we know it melts the bike so that's not the way to try. We had a very dark brown spark plug, we've been told to lower even the 148 jet. The pilot jet was B36 changed to B35, seem okay. We were trying to mess with the float level, with your measurement it was less than 14. We've been told that hold the carb upside down, release the float and let it settle by gravity, then from the gasket surface it must be 11mm. Our is slightly bigger now. What should we try, and I can't understand how the hell could you set your bike up with these parts?

Hi Krisztián Thanks for your message. It took me many hours of trial and error to get my bike good with this carb. Since making the video I have altered the carb settings again due to the rapidly changing climate here in Australia. My main jet is now 150 as it is now our warmer humid months. I also experienced difficulty with the float level. This was causing me massive difficulties. Make sure the float is not sticking inside the bowl and causing overflow/flooding. My current settings are -B36 pilot -Thick needle top clip -And 150 main jet. Do you have a new carb or an old carb that is restored like mine?

@@tomdidit4216 thanks for the update! I think the carb is even older than the bike🤣. We got this from an old AF1 racer, properly set with the 150cc cylinder, wasn't restored yet. Tomorrow I compeletly disassemble it, my car mechanic mate will ultrasonic clean ever part from any bit of dust. After that I got a new kit of seals O rings etc, it will go together with them. Many people said we got plus air sucked in somewhere, but tested with the brake cleaner, didn't rev so we guess no. We got a darkbrown spark plug with a 148 main and B35 idle jet, K21 needle ofc. In hungary the spring is starting, I'm usually tuning and riding in 20°C. You need the bigger idle jet and I think the bigger main too because the air contains less oxygen in Australia?

Hi Tom, I really enjoy these videos. Especially since you are most of the aprilia 125 two stroke game here on yt, (for me at least) I'm struggling with the carburettor myself and I've learnt a lot of this video. However I've got one question , could you leave the link where you bought the different main jets? I'm going to buy some myself and was wondering if you bought them as a pack so that it's possible to mix and feel what's best for my bike... looking for a set between 128-200 ish.... Thanks! keep it up.

Hey so I'm 16 and currently have a moped but I'm getting a 125 in a few months as I turn 17 (A1 restrictions in UK) and I'm a bit unsure what to get because basically all top line 125cc are the same for example yamaha mt 125 and yamaha yzf r125 have the same acceleration and same top speed even with how different the style of bike they are. So I was looking to get a honda cb 125r however the aprilia rs 125 is the only 125cc bike that i know of that changes the game due to it being two stroke My question is that, is it really hard to maintain an rs 125, is it legal for A1 use as it has way more horsepower, just general comparison Because I would love something with more power however I don't know if there is drawbacks I hope you see this as I'm dying trying to figure this all out😂 My moped is 4 stroke so I have no idea about 2 stroke engines

Greeting Ellis. Thanks for your message - I hope my response finds you well. When Aprilia RS came out I was 16. It was a dream bike for me, however I could never afford one. I’m 39 now and had to get one. They are so much fun! Understanding your current situation, if you are after extra power and some fun, there is nothing like a good running 2 stroke (in my opinion). Of course, extra power comes extra maintenance. The Yamaha YZF125R and Honda would also be fun, reliable and make a great commuting bike due to the fact it is using modern 4 stroke technology etc etc. It’s an exciting time for you. Wishing you good luck with the decision you make👍. Regards Tom

Hello Tan Thank you for your message. There main difference here is the 2 stroke engine and the 4 stroke engine. There are videos on YT that explain the main differences (if you are interested)👍 Long story short, small capacity 2 stroke engines will often outperform the 4 stroke equivalent. My bike in the video has a somewhat “tuned” engine. To answer your questions- I don’t think the newer RS4 motor can match the performance of the older RS without spending big money. That said, the RS4 is still a great bike for twisting roads etc etc👍👍 Hope this helps Cheers Tom

Isn't the flat spot a CDI issue? and somewhat irrelevant as the bike really isn't happy unless running below 6500 and makes almost no power under that.
@tomdidit4216
@tomdidit4216 Жыл бұрын
Samuel Thanks for your comment👍 The stutter around appears to be a 6,500 is a common issue with this bike. I have read also that it could be the CDI unit - I’m my case it was the jetting. These days, due to warmer weather, I’m finding that a 150 main jet is working well.

@@tomdidit4216 yeah in Europe are least in the 90s and 00s the Italians purposely retarded the ignition at certain rev point to get around emissions laws. But it didn’t effect the bikes cos obvs they only get ridden above that RPM. Mine had a horrible flat spot from new but it was 4-5. Not as high as 6.5

Luciano, thank you for leaving this comment and sharing your Aprilia experience. I have read that the air box snorkel provides sound resonance back into the carb, thus helping air flow. Is this correct? Otherwise, my bike pulls so much stronger with the new and tuned carb. Not sure I want to try changing it…. I’m interested to learn how the bike sounds to you? Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment. Very much appreciated!! Cheers Tom

@@tomdidit4216 Hi Tom I do run one of my rs125s with a piper cross cone filter but the bike is set up correctly or running polini 154 jolly Corsa exhaust etc and that runs spot on some say they don't run on cone filters but it's all about set up ! Anyway you will find if you put the snorkel back it will be even smother I can hear you still are not right in mid range At end of day aprilia designed these back in my day with 34 carb and standard airbox Put snorkel back in make sure it is full snorkel not cut down as some do ! 2.5 turns out air screw 36 pilot 155/ 158 main start at 155 K57 needle top clip so leanest setting You will feel it will feel so clean all way through and get 12k no problem If you want really tune it Go polini 154 / jollymoto Corsa 115 exhaust / 34 carb 160 main open cone / lightened flywheel port polini bike is crazy quick for one of these with good ! Reliability just change rings every 3k miles good for 10k bottom end Remember to do good quality rod kit before putting polini 100% get snorkel back in I buy loads of these and young kids take them out they just run terrible and impossible to set up
