I’ve found that using cedar vs pressure treated when building gates really reduces the weight which also helps reduce sag.

I watched your video hoping to get some hints to design two 20' steel gates that slide together to block a 40' fiend entrance. We can't use swing gates because they would swing out into the roadway or into crops in the field.

I tried one of those turnbuckle anti-sag lift kits and it didn't work at all. As I tightened it instead of lifting the sagging gate, it simply warped the gate. I fixed the problem by designing, building, and installing an adjustable spacer that goes into the gap between the lower gate hinge and the gate post. Problem solved.

Having built more fences than I care to mention, the only suggestion to your viewers is always always always layout existing or planned seating, utilities, barbeque, etc. placement before you decide on gates. Gate placement and direction of opening is one of those things that really stinks to redo.

Gates are hard. One thing I've learned is that a gate you build from wood will beat a cheap metal gate from a big box store any day, just because you can repair and adjust it as needed.

You have evpensive tools in your workshop and making stuff what everyone can do with accu drill and handsaw. Make something more creative instead of explaining obvious things and buying half product's. In the past you were inspiration but currently I wouldn't say that

I have always built what I need and want, bringing a camera along showing what I did, what I used and why. Many of my Viewers are still learning and are not skilled Builders or Makers. I enjoy passing along information but sure is hard to please everyone. Some want more complicated builds and feel I'm being lazy or slacking when doing something they feel everyone should already know. Others, complain projects are too complex and want a more simple project because they are Beginners. If my channel no longer suits you, no hard feelings. Thanks for watching.
@otomietel1768

@@AprilWilkerson No, it's not my point, when I say creative I don't have in mind something complex or big but before you were showing whole process, and have built a lot of interesting sometimes helpful and even small things.

April is indeed a great teacher. I am an engineer and I was a teacher myself. I think it takes three things to make a good teacher: love to learn, love to pass on knowledge and respect your students. Three qualities that April has and that’s why I put her in my top 5 makers.

Great tips! One thing I would like to mention is that for a sliding gate, the floor/ground needs to be level side to side in order for the gate wheels to make contact with the ground as it slides.

The best way I remembered what direction to put a diagonal post is by thinking of a hanging shelf. Unless they're one of the "floating" ones then they typically have a bar or some sort of decor running from the bottom of the shelf (along the wall) up to the edge of the self to prevent it from flopping down and flat against the wall. That diagonal brace will serve the same purpose in keeping the entire gate elevated and not flopped.

Keep in mind too that a compression angle brace needs to be inside of 45 degrees or it's also ineffective.
