In 1940s Queen Kossamak started developing this dance as a recreation inspired from the apsara carved in the stone walls in Angkor as reference for crown and costume, and in the process she trained the first modern professional apsara dancer of Cambodia, princess Bopha Devi. Princess Bopha Devi first performed this dance in 1967. Keep in mind Cambodia as a modern nation, an independent country free of Siamese/French political and cultural influence, is still very young. Pre-civil war before Khmer Rouge genocide, the Queen was actively reforming the Royal Ballet of Cambodia to retain Khmer aspects of the dance/costume and take out the Siamese influences as much as possible. Robam Tep Apsara is not that old, but was developed recently within the last century for cultural and political nation-building efforts, and was nearly lost after the genocide. The source material referenced to inspire this dance is old, but the actual music/dance is contemporary, and is regarded as a national treasure.

It's not easy for me to tell you in detail in here, but I can tell you about Apsara. You can see how they dress up themselves are the same, but different in color of sompot (skirt). You can see there is only one lady is wearing white sompot acts as the princess, and the group of red and blue sompot act as the maids of princess. The Camera Focus on her because in Cambodia arpsara dance alway have the leader of arpasra it mean she is the biggest or leader of all the arpsara. I ever heard teacher of Khmer dance said that the leader of arpsara is the most beautiful of all arpsara and they are Represents the most beautiful Apsara and represents the Apsara that the relationship between the gods and humans .

This style was first used in Angkor era 802 to 1431. Still the costume from earlier era is also similar but not as fancy as Angkor (the jewelry and clothes patterns)
