I've seen many original and unusual concepts since seeing the first Corvette prototype at a pre-release viewing at the 1952 GM Autorama as a kid (my dad was a manager at GM); that turned into a very successful brand. That event made me a car nut who always followed the cool new developments and innovative headliners that rarely ever saw the light of day as real products that lasted. The Aptera seemed like a potential exception a dozen years ago, and then disappeared. It's fantastic seeing it back! With a few minor warts, it has beautiful lines that just might catch on! Additionally, the creators seem to have a firm grasp on making a dramatically novel design very practical! As a retired mechanical engineer who's always been into cars & bicycles, I hear what they say as down-to-earth logic in their approach. The solar panels are mostly decoration. Their function in ideal situations is pretty mild. Nevermind it takes being aligned with the sun for good efficiency. To call it highly suspect from a engineering and accounting perspective would be generous.
@biffwilliams61913 жыл бұрын
Most of the solar panels are a $900 option, so you don't have to get them. For people that live in apartments and park on the street, the solar panels are crucial and highly cost and time effective compared to expensive public chargers. From an engineering perspective, having an independent source of power helps with a lot of edge cases that bedevil normal EV's such as battery safety if the car is left parked in the sun for a week or two, keeping the batteries above damaging low charge states, etc. Most vehicles should at least have a solar panel on the roof to run a vent fan to keep the cabin cool while parked in the sun. This on its own would be highly cost-effective over the life of the vehicle with decreased AC usage after startup, increased passenger comfort, and increased lifetime of cabin electronics and materials.
@deanmcmanis93983 жыл бұрын
@@nobodynoone2500 Solar panels can only produce so much electricity. The key to making them work well in an EV is that the vehicle's efficiency has to be superior. It wouldn't even move the charge needle in a 9,000lb, brick of a Hummer. But by the Aptera using such a small amount of power, it makes all the difference in the world.

Great design! I hope it turns into a successful product! Suggestions: you could make the top fixed windows extend (a bit) more into the roof, and for sure the wheel covers on the final product must be way less wobbly.
@hondolane31253 жыл бұрын
I did not want to be the first to throw a dart at their prototype, but as an automotive structural engineer the term we would use for that amplitude of "wobble" is "unsalable". Especially as it appears the driver can see the wheel right out the side window. I also appreciate how difficult reducing a vibration response like this can be, especially when it is exposed to such direct excitation (ON the wheel). I wish them the best of luck, love the practicality of the back half, especially the available insert to complete the flat deck for camping in. I used to do that in my capped pickup with a plywood deck and carpet.

@@hondolane3125 It is definitely not a deal-breaker, and even without any automotive structural background, I can see that the piece is missing an anchor point at the top. From Aptera: The mounts for the Alpha pants are just not that strong. The Beta’s will have an inner liner that also braces the whole assembly to the motor. When watching the Jay Leno’s garage video below, something that Chris Anthony ( Co CEO of Aptera motors) said at minute 13:00 REALLY REALLY caught my attention that I don’t think many understood just how revolutionary/groundbreaking it is. Chris said : “ we only need a kilowatt and a half to push Aptera at highway speed” so 1500watts!! That’s pretty amazingly small amount of energy to keep a car moving at highway speed. Two things really strike me about that. 1) that’s about the same amount of energy needed to power a small compact, inexpensive electric room heater, or a microwave, and pretty amazing that small amount of energy can keep an Aptera moving down the road at highway speeds. 2) the full solar package on Aptera produces 700watts, so this means the solar cells are providing almost HALF the power needed to push an Aptera down the highway on a sunny day!
