I ordered a a 40kWh (400 mile) version with full solar, tent and AWD. As an engineer I appreciate the design and I also like their stance on the right to repair. They believe the owner deserves the right to get parts and make repairs themselves. This helps with a startup as they can’t immediately hav repair centers everywhere.

I'm one of those guys who fell in love with the Aptera. I pre-ordered mine with the 40kW/400mile range, AWD (0-60 in 3.5 sec), full solar (40mi/day with good sun). On top of the Aptera's original styling, and performance, it should cost almost nothing to drive daily. Thanks Jay for featuring the reborn Aptera. I look forward to hearing your impressions of the production model next year.

@@TheBandit7613 The original Aptera was ground breaking for its time. But the reborn Aptera includes the technical advances of the last 10 years. From wheel motors, to more advanced batteries, to the software and control systems, to the cooling, to the solar panels. Production is to begin early next year. If the company can stay alive on its own then it is not a viable company. The government is there to govern. The government isn't there to provide loans. When companies runs to the Gov for loans ...aka sometime it is called corporate welfare, it is called Socialism. When companies runs to the banks or private investment ...aka IPO or crowdfunding. If I were scooting around town more, it'd still involve a good percentage of my trips involving carrying some tools or parts or semi-bulky items (cause kind of a handyperson.... as electrics go, I'd probably be wanting something more like a light delivery truck or little van if I were doing more 'house calls' but it's getting more intriguing now that the tech's good enough that these little kinds of things don't have to be nothing-but-seats-and-wheels. :)

I've seen many original and unusual concepts since seeing the first Corvette prototype at a pre-release viewing at the 1952 GM Autorama as a kid (my dad was a manager at GM); that turned into a very successful brand. That event made me a car nut who always followed the cool new developments and innovative headliners that rarely ever saw the light of day as real products that lasted. The Aptera seemed like a potential exception a dozen years ago, and then disappeared. It's fantastic seeing it back! With a few minor warts, it has beautiful lines that just might catch on! Additionally, the creators seem to have a firm grasp on making a dramatically novel design very practical! As a retired mechanical engineer who's always been into cars & bicycles, I hear what they say as down-to-earth logic in their approach. Most of the solar panels are a $900 option, so you don't have to get them. For people that live in apartments and park on the street, the solar panels are crucial and highly cost and time effective compared to expensive public chargers. From an engineering perspective, having an independent source of power helps with a lot of edge cases that bedevil normal EV's such as battery safety if the car is left parked in the sun for a week or two, keeping the batteries above damaging low charge states, etc. Most vehicles should at least have a solar panel on the roof to run a vent fan to keep the cabin cool while parked in the sun. This on its own would be highly cost-effective over the life of the vehicle with decreased AC usage after startup, increased passenger comfort, and increased lifetime of cabin electronics and materials.

The most expensive model of this car has a range of 1000 miles, is faster, and is less than HALF the price of the L1. The base model has the same range as the L1, but is literally four times cheaper. The L1 was also limited production, so they didn't even intend on selling many and probably couldn't at that price. Comparing this to the L1 is honestly like comparing this to the Model S Plaid. 99/100 people would pick the plaid over this, but this for $25k vs the plaid for $120k? According to Aptera representative Rev. Bruce Nelson the beta version will be made from a new composite derived from recycled, biodegradable, gluten-free material called 'Love Resin'. I did not want to be the first to throw a dart at their prototype, but as an automotive structural engineer the term we would use for that amplitude of "wobble" is "unsalable". Especially as it appears the driver can see the wheel right out the side window. I also appreciate how difficult reducing a vibration response like this can be, especially when it is exposed to such direct excitation (ON the wheel). From Aptera: The mounts for the Alpha pants are just not that strong. The Beta’s will have an inner liner that also braces the whole assembly to the motor. lot of drama involving new investors who didn't understand the concept, who then left the workers in the factory out to dry. It was a moment not all that unlike seeing rows of GM EV1s at the crusher. Tesla managed to make enough noise and make enough of the right moves just about then to really pull mainstream electrics to a much more standard car ethos.

@@weatheranddarkness I was excited to see the prototypes of the Elio 3 wheeler about a decade ago. I really thought we would see it in production by now, but it seems as though the rumors are running rampant about what looked to be a very promising vehicle. Let's hope that some of these possible commuter vehicles finally come to fruition!

@@braxtonnelson7422 I never understood the thinking behind the elio. It's basically a Twizzy with doors? What purpose does it serve?
@braxtonnelson7422
@braxtonnelson7422 3 жыл бұрын
@@weatheranddarkness From my own perspective, when the Elio was first announced and the prototype was being shown, it was intended to be a commuter vehicle. Differences between the Elio and the Twizy are more than just the doors! The Twizy is a 4-wheeled, battery powered city "car" (although it is usually classified as a quadricycle). The Elio is a 3-wheeled, petrol engined autocycle (as it is called in the U.S.), and as such, avoids many of the requisites for being considered an automobile here. The Twizy, unlike the Elio, was never intended for the U.S. market.

@@braxtonnelson7422 the class doesn't matter. The use case is what interests me. As far as I can tell with zero storage it's what, to get one person to work if they don't need to bring any materials with them? The Elio and Twizzy are replacements for a bus, rather than replacements for a car.

It's a good point about wanting to be discrete. I would want this to be my only vehicle, and if I got the long-range version, it could accomplish all the tasks (well, one other seat would be great, but not essential)... but I don't like the idea of drawing so much attention when driving around the Baja peninsula.

When watching the Jay Leno’s garage video below, something that Chris Anthony ( Co CEO of Aptera motors) said at minute 13:00 REALLY REALLY caught my attention that I don’t think many understood just how revolutionary/groundbreaking it is. Chris said : “ we only need a kilowatt and a half to push Aptera at highway speed” so 1500watts!! That’s pretty amazingly small amount of energy to keep a car moving at highway speed. Two things really strike me about that. 1) that’s about the same amount of energy needed to power a small compact, inexpensive electric room heater, or a microwave, and pretty amazing that small amount of energy can keep an Aptera moving down the road at highway speeds. 2) the full solar package on Aptera produces 700watts, so this means the solar cells are providing almost HALF the power needed to push an Aptera down the highway on a sunny day! Revolutionary to say the least!
