Can we all just take a moment to appreciate her phrasing. Such shape. Lots of light and shade. As though she caresses each word. And growing sublimely into each phrase and fading out gracefully. You can hear her emotion in this and even the effect of sobbing in her voice swelling in the phrase at one point (around 8:40) . I rarely hear phrasing as good as this. You can barely tell where she even breathes. Her voice seemingly floating out of nowhere at times , her tuning and tone masterful that you can barely tell where the orchestra/voice crosses over. A quality severely lacking from many singers today who simply obsess about singing too loudly and with too much vibrato and calling it “colour”. NO . Colour comes from mastering phrasing , words, dynamics and musicality it really does. These are essential for conveying the true emotions behind any music. Vibrato is simply a change of texture and can be lovely when used sparingly *where it calls for it and nowhere else*. I just came from a video of two singers wobbling through every phrase for the sake of it throwing musicality and tuning to the wind as a result. What’s the point of obsessing over one vocal technique at the expense of losing absolutely everything else? Ghastly. Colour should wash over you and leave you feeling breathless. You shouldn’t really be able to even articulate what it is that brought the colour it’s just everything coming together and a feeling that is left on the listener. The musician’s job is to transport the listener . Truly marvellous demonstration of true colour here and exactly how it should be done.

I really enjoyed reading your comments, and you were so spot on! Very often singers like to sing way too loud, ignoring the sentiments and desires of the composers! My teacher is very strict about us singers serving the composers truthfully. Going for the artistic beauty rather than easy applause from all the fireworks. What I heard here is nothing short of amazing and perfection. Considers she's also an excellent conductor at the same time, I'm completely blown away! She makes me want to be a better singer, which is exactly the kind of motivation I need right now. Being away from the stage for the whole year (aren't we all?), gives me the time to study and improve further.

The bigger our concert halls and opera houses got, the more singing have way to triple fortes - what amounts to shouting. So-called smaller voices with more color and nuanced color and phrasing were left for small groups or piano and voice alone on a stage. Sad but true
