general motors should never have stopped making these..they are great.. I love my 92 it just wont quit..reliability is the name of the game. nice job upgrading this one.

not much work to be honest with you, just make sure that you have a proper motor mount and a good tranny and you are good to go

I have a '92 Astro Rally Sport 4.3liter and I can't find headers for it. Just looking for some equal length shorties or long... I already have an exhaust setup that I like but I want it to be complete with the headers. Now I have to find a good intake system. Already replaced the distributor with a MSD model along with upgraded spark plugs and 8.8mm spark plug cables with heat sleeves.

I changed the driver side one on my 92 so many time's I finally just left the inside panel off, was tired of replacing those little plastic xmas tree retainers.

Sounds healthy! I just inherited my fathers '99 GMC Safari and I'd like to do a V8 swap in it but they had a new Jasper V6 installed a couple years ago and it still runs good with not many miles on it. A video of what you had to do differently or what you needed from what to pull off the swap would be interesting. Like what kind of motor mounts and from where? Did you have to change the oil pan? What kind of exhaust do you need to run, headers and which ones? Etc etc

if it is on a regular 2wd van? you can get the motor mount from any auto part store, as for the headers? i used the Flowtech block hugger headers. I kept the same oil pan on my 2wd, but you will have to modify if you have a AWD. I would also recommend that you find a good low mileage transmission off a v8. My v6 tranny was blown a few days after i put my V8 motor in it. Just food for thought. ;) Oh and do not re-use a V6 TBI on a V8, it will stall. find yourself a good TBI off a V8 motor, rebuild the tbi system, clean it and voila. :D. Hope this helps

@@yannickdocq9781 Yes that helps. It is a two wheel drive. I would get a complete engine including the TBI if I did it but I've been reading in a forum where people are using V8 conversion motor mounts that have the mounting holes three inches forward or something like that. I'm not sure if that's just to allow the use of different style headers or if there's another reason. It seems to me that the driveshaft wouldn't work properly if there's a three inch difference where the motor sits...Gotta research that some more, a little confused on that part.

@@bodeine454 not sure about the drive shaft issue as mine went in without any modifications. the reason why your motor mount moves 3" forwards is because of the extra 2 banger. ;) as for the headers? you can use any headers you want, mine is a hugger so it can be closer to the engine, due to the lack of room in the engine bay. which forum did you go? cause the forum i go to were very helpful and never mentioned anything to do with the drive train issue. with the proper mount, it "was for me anyway" a very simple swap. don't hesitate to ask question if you have any.

Great work but I don't understand the body lift. I did a v8 ASTRO years ago and it fit great with a high rise intake an carb. Also FYI long tail 350 bolts right in place of the 700r4. Way more fun

Great job on the van and video! Did you have to do anything inside the van to accommodate the new motor?? Like did the doghouse ( cover) from the V6 fit??

I'm assuming you were able to use the stock driveshaft? And, 9 years later, how is it all holding up? Especially the rear end.

That vam conversion is awsome. I just got a gmc safri and starting to worn out front end parts and brakes doing the rear bearings hopefully tomorrow. Were u able to use the same motor mounts as the v6 or have to out in different ones?

Well thank you. the motor mount is different than a v6 sadly enough, you are going have to replace it. i got mine from the auto part store

The one real thing that bothers me the most about the 4.3Liter V6's that chevy put into the Astros is that it's an iron block with iron heads. Damn all that weight in the front. Wish I could find some aluminum heads at least. What aluminum engine would bolt right up with the computer and trans that comes standard in a 1992 model? Anyone??? Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You come and do mine, okay?!? 96' Safari and I have a LM1 350 with less then 30K miles on it, biggest Summit Hyd. (house brand) Cam, Chinese clone Air Gap Intake, and 670cfm Summit (house brand) Carb... and a Heavy Duty (from a big block motor home) rebuilt Turbo 400 with cable shifter. All I need is the headers and mount "kit", right?

Well, im on my way now and im gonna definitely look for this line ur talking about. This has to be it.I have gut feeling it is.I did see a small black vac line that goes from the bottom front of the THRODLE BODY but goes to that little gray box that I told u about with the red plug on it.the one that has the nipple broken off.one goes to the front of the THRODLE BODY and the other one that's broke was suppose to go to that fuel canister thing.Because the nipple is broke the hose is just laying next to the nipple. Would the map have anything to do with the fuel canister? Like would one line go from map to front of intake? And from canister back to that little gray box?

Thanks. not sure on the price part of it, but if you do some research, you will find some new rebuild Aluminum blocks and heads. this site have some www.jegs.com/p/Chevrolet-Performance/Chevrolet-Performance-Small-Block-Chevy-Aluminum-Race-Blocks/955892/10002/-1 if you do a V8 conversion, keep in mind that you should have a V8 ECU for the same year of your vehicle, V8 tranny or a V8 torque converter, new Motor mount and a V8 TBI system. In some models, you might have to change your fuel pump for higher or lower fuel pressure. in my case, it was from 63 psi to 13 Psi fuel pump. You can re-use your tranny and it will bolt right in, but do make sure that you buy a V8 torque converter, the V6 TC will be fried in no time if you start doing burn outs or heavy hauling. Not recommended. Also? some of you might disagree, but stay away from that Airaid Poweraid adapter, ever since i put that spacer in there? my van runs rich. i'm currently in the process of removing it. Hope that helped and sorry for the delay on responding. still working on that blue beast. ;)

Two questions ? First did you have to use aftermarket ignition for distributor or factory : second what make headers : 3 speed transmission or 4 speed

the distributor i use was on the spec for the motor i took it from. in this case? it was off a 94 Chevy Suburban, So i used an ignition system for a 94 suburban. my transmission is a 4L60E "4 speed" and as for the headers? they are from Flowmaster that you can get at your local Auto part store. the only issues i have with those headers is that replacing spark plugs? is a pain the @$$. The van is soon going for another rebuild as i will put a AWD system in it. so i will put the original exhaust manifold.

Flowtech is the headers i used and the sunvisor was bought used, i put in the led shortly after, but it is a LUND

soon the header is gonna be off it as i will convert the van into a AWD. i'll be putting in a stock V8 350 from a Chevy Suburban or similar, Cause as it is? it is really hard to change the spark plug with the current configuration.

hi. Yankee Doc was wondering if you can help me with a problem for 3 months after I get my van running it's been running fine what's it doing now is going down the road it's like someone turned the key off and turned it back on again change the computer I'll check wiring it's intermittent problem wondering if you have any ideas check engine light only comes on when it's in the process of stalling but it's real quick it's like flipping a light switch off and then on again how to change the computer change Electronic Module check wiring for short I'm kind of stumped now

I need help. I have a 98 Safari and I'm putting in a 99 350 vortec I need to know how to put the wiring harness together without using a stand alone. Can I take the V8 spider injectors and incorporate that into the V6 wiring harness with the V8 ECU?

I can't really say for sure, i never had a Spider fuel injector replacement neither that i had done a V8 swap with a Vortech motor on earlier vans, mine was a TBI. According to what i viewed on You tube. the spider fuel injectors release fuel all at the same time, it is not like one release fuel at the cylinder according to the timing. Correct me if i am wrong, but you should be able to put in a V8 Spider fuel injector in there with the same harness off your V6. If I am wrong, I am sure one of you will correct me. hope this helps.

hey I got it I change the computer again I got a code 45 oxygen sensor on this time it's A6 cylinder sensor so that's probably what the problem is I'll see if I can get one for the v8 since I need to replace it anyway the wires are cracked on it from being hot and plugs not in really good shape knock sensors for one that was on it when I got it so I know it's a V 8 knock sensor. how's your van running now

on a V6 it will work, not on a V8. you can't use a v6 tbi on a V8 motor. it will stall. i tried. ;)

the ecu was a plug and play, never had any issues with the swap. i took mine off a 94 v8 suburban

Adrianna is also me as i lost my account info for a bit, but ya, just use the chip off a 93-94 Suburban or any pick ups that runs a v8 and put the chip in the V6 ECU. to do so you will have to remove that little cover, remove the original Eprom and replace it with the V8 one and off you go

hey Yankee Doc I think the ground to chew ation that you were told me about could have been the problem I took the main ground wire from the battery to the block paint was still on the Block not letting the ground to a good from battery 2 engine back of the head was the same way I took the Bolt off use sandpaper back of head and where the battery cable hooks to the block took it for a test drive drove around couple hours night and day seeing them I don't think I'm headed it seems like it's not having any more problems because it if the dash lights are even brighter so maybe I got a good ground and that I'm hoping that's all it is it seems to run better thanks for the help if you look me up on Facebook I use the same name on here and send me a friend request

rather stick with the original part of the vehicle as the van runs on TBI and don't want to deal with wirings and all. Might as well leave it stock with a TBI V8 setting

Hey bud, I have a question that im really hoping u can help me with, ive been online, to all the part stores, mechanic shops, and no one can tell me whats wrong with my van.. So heres my question: I have a 1995 astro van,4,3 vortex v6.all wheel drive.its super mint! Clean, the whole inside was completely redone with custom interior, has nice 20 inch chrome wheels, its bad ass glossy black with a kick ass body kit all the way around, xenon lights, the works..heres the thing, I start the van, its starts right up, idles great, everything works, ac, heat, etc.. BUT AS SOON AS I GO TO TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL, EVEN A LITTLE BIT, THE VAN WANTS TO STALL! IF U FEATHER IT IT'LL LET U REV IT TO A HIGH RPM , BUT AS SOON AS U GET PAST ABOUT HALF THE PEDAL, IT WANTS TO STALL OUT AND WANTS TO SHUT OFF.U CANT EVEN DRIVE IT, BUT IT HAS ONLY 87,000 ORIGINAL MILES! IM BAFFLED! I've CHANGED THE MAP SENSOR, IDLE CONTROL SENSOR, PLUGS, WIRES, FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER, OIL FILTER, DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR,WHAT THE HECK CAN IT BE? SOMEONE SAID MAYBE THE SPIDER FUEL "THING" UNDER THE INTAKE? ? BUT THEN SOMEONE ELSE SAID IF IT WAS THAT IT'D STILL DRIVE, BUT WOULD JUST RUN SHITY, THIS THING WONT EVEN LET U GET THAT FAR, AS SOON AS U PUT IT IN GEAR IT STALLS..BUT STARTS AND IDLES LIKE A FUCKING CHAMP!! I DONT GET IT.MAYBE A VACUUM LINE? BUT IF IT WAS A VAC LINE, THEN IT WOULD EVEN IDLE BAD OR FUNNY, RIGHT? Spider fuel could be an issue for rough idling or even not start at all if you don't have any pressure. does it smell rich? could it be the O2 sensor? have you done any timing work done to it? have you checked your TPS sensor or iac valve. You have done a lot to it and should of covered most of the issue(s). i could also think that you might have a bad ground or the ECU could also be bad. Try the timing work on it and let me know how it goes. Those running on a OBD2 system, timing is done automatically, but you did say that you replaced the distributor, you could of maybe also reversed it "180". No shame to admit it. LOL i have done it. :D

I have read your post again and again and same thing happen to me when i replaced the Distributor on my pick up. if it idles super duper like you said and stalls when you put it in gears? chances are that you have reversed the timing on your Distributor. Remove it and find your TDC, then point the tip of your Rotor "iginition" towards Cyl number one. then with a large Flat head screw driver or if you can take your previous distributor apart, you can salvage the inside shaft and with rotor still attached to it, you can easily point it to Cyl number 2 so when you will put your new Dist in, it will engaged in the gear and will be bang on Cyl 1 once your dist will be installed. Once you have done that? do a timing job on it "don't forget to disconnect the tan wire" and make sure you are at 0 Deg. Once all done? connect the tan wire back and enjoy the ride. Hope this helps

david benz david benz Well, you pretty much covered everything there. and yes that is called a Charcoal Canister or fuel Vapor Canister, this even it fails, the motor shouldn't behave the way it does, Now as of why it is revving so high? i could think of a few things like a Vacuum leak? or a Bad IAC valve that is stuck open. when stuck open, it lets too much air in the intake. it sit on the passenger side just above the intake manifold and it is a big plug. i think you can use a size 21 socket to remove it. That would be my other option is took look at the Iac valve. Letting to much air in the intake will cause the motor to have a High RPM. Do you also hear any vacuum sound? if yes? you have a leak, could be from the lines or intake manifold. The other black box that you are talking about as they have severals, one is for the MAP sensor, should have a Vacuum line connected to it and the other one should be for the EGR valve. Look at those and let me know how it goes. If you could take a vid of the symptom, it would be great. i usually go by the sound of the engine, it could be as stupid as a vacuum leak or a bad sensor. And it doesn't that it is new that it will work. sometimes, new parts are faulty. ;) One other thing you haven't mentioned in your list is the ignition coil and ignition module. if you have bad spark, the van will stall. you should see a nice Blue spark coming out of your spark plug. if it is kind of red "ish" change your ignition coil.

I have an 05 Astro AWD (all stock) and I experienced the same symptoms as you described. Additionally, I was getting high fueling in an ECM read. After 6 months of chasing this and chasing that, I then swapped out the catalytic converters and problem solved.

Ok, wow, I didn't realize how many stupid little things that it could be.its amazing. But im gonna check everything u said to check.im gonna try to take a video of what its doing too, so u can see exactly what I mean.. There is one thing that u said that caught my attention, u said my map sensor should have a vacuum line on it? Well I know exactly what the map sensor is because I just put a brand-new one on 2 weeks ago and the one that the part store gave me doesn't have a vac line on it at all..it has a little green plug that plugs in to it, and on the map sensor it self there's nothing but a little black nipple on it that goes into the intake, and then the 2 small screws that hold it in place. Should there be a vac line? Maybe the part store gave me the wrong one.I looked online and theres 5 different ones and one does have a vac line.but their all saying their for a 95 astro..if mine is suppose to have a vac line to it where would it plug into? It would go from the map sensor to where? Would it go to that fuel charcoal canister thing? Because theres no little black hoses around my map..but it does make this weird sucking sound right before it stalls, like its gasping for air.I bet the damn part store gave me the wrong map.that would do it.im gonna take some pictures today so u can see exactly what I see.ill do a video too. And I had a feeling the guy gave me the wrong map sensor too.because when I first bought this van, the guy that owned it thought it had a bad map sensor, so he took it off and never got around to replacing it and the part got lost some where .so I bought it with no map sensor at all.so I've never even seen what it looked like and when I got the new one I couldn't compare the new with the old to see IF they were the same, because I never had the old one..so I gave the part store the yr make an model and I just assumed they gave me the right one.ill bet they gave me the wrong part.all this time and that's probably the problem. Where would the vac line go though? From the map to what? Because ill go look to see if theres a hose anywhere that would go to the map.I didn't see anything, but then again I never was really looking because the one they gave me didn't have a vac line on it.so I just plugged it it and screwed it down.

david benz Most Chevy cars and trucks and vans of those years have a MAP sensor. Yes they are green connector to it, but you should also have a Vacuum line that should go from the sensor to the vacuum port on the front end of the intake. " should be a medium size Vacuum line"without the Map sensor, it could also give the ECu a bad code to run your engine like crap.

Yannick Docq I have a 89 astro I want to put a v8 in but idk if I have to reinforce the chassis and would you know if the same wiring harness will fit the 89 cuz I know the 1987-94 are sort of the same

LOL, TO ANSWER A FEW OF UR QUESTIONS: IT DOESN SMELL RICH AT ALL, IT ACTUALLY STARTS RIGHT UP AND IDLES GREAT, AS FOR THE O2 SENSOR, I DID START IT YESTERDAY BECAUSE A BUDDY TOLD ME THE SAME THING.SO I STARTED IT, AND WHILE IT WAS RUNNING, I REACHED IN FROM THE DOG HOUSE AND WAS ABLE TO UNPLUG IT.THE THING IS, NOTHING CHANGED AT ALL. IT STILL CONTINUED TO IDLE FINE.SO WE PLUGGING IT BACK IN ( WHILE STILL RUNNING ) AND AGAIN, NO CHANGE.SHOULD IT HAVE MESSED WITH THE IDLE OR SHOULD HAVE STALLED AT ALL? THEN WE SHUT IT OFF, UNPLUGGED IT AGAIN, AND STARTED IT WHILE UNPLUGGED. NO CHANGE.IT STARTED RIGHT UP, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER TIME.SO WHILE IT WAS RUNNING, WE PLUGGED IT BACK IT, SAME THING, NO IDLE CHANGE, STILL WANTED TO STALL AS SOON AS U TOUCH THE GAS PEDDLE. BUT IT U PRESS THE GAS AND RAISE THE RPM VERY SLOWLY, THE DAMN ENGINE WILL LET U GET ALL THE WAY TO 7,000 RPM BEFORE IT MAKES A BOGGING SOUND AND WANTS To STALL. AND I DID NOTICE THAT THERE ARE THOSE 2 FUEL LINES COMING INTO THE INTAKE, I CAN GET TO THEM FROM THE DOG HOUSE, WHEN THE VAN WAS OFF, I PRESSED THE LITTLE THREADED VALVE NIPPLE AND SURE ENOUGH FUEL COME PISSING OUT LIKE CRAZY! I START IT, PRESS THE SAME LITTLE NIPPLE ON THAT FUEL LINE, AND AGAIN FUEL COMES OUT AND THE VAN BURPS AND WANTS TO STALL.AS IT SHOULD I GUESS, BECAUSE I RELEASED THE PRESSURE.SO IM GETTING FUEL PRESSURE.I HAVE TO BE HONEST, I NEVER PUT A FUEL PRESSURE GAGE ON IT THOUGH. I DID WHAT I TOLD U WITH THE Fuel LINE, SO I DIDNT THINK I NEEDED IT.I JUST FIGURED IT HAS PRESSURE BECAUSE IT COMES OUT LIKE CRAZY, WITH THE VAN RUNNING OR NOT.U TURN THE KEY ONE CLICK, AND U CAN CLEARLY HEAR THE Fuel PUMP HUM LIKE CRAZY FOR 4 SECONDS.BUT ITS WEIRD, BECAUSE IF U SLOWLY PRESS THE PEDAL, THE DAMN THING REVS LIKE U WOULDN'T BELIEVE, NO TICKING, NO SMOKE, NO FUEL SMELLS, SO IT'LL LET U REV THE MOTOR VERY SLOWLY, BUT THE SECOND U PUT IT IN GEAR, IT WANTS TO STALL, SPUTTERS LIKE CRAZY, AND AFTER 6 SECONDS , FINALLY SHUTS OFF..I DONT GET IT.SO WITH IT LETTING ME REV IT SLOWLY LIKE THAT, AND THE RPMS RAISING THE WAY THEY DO, DO U STILL THINK TIMING WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT? BUT I DID START THE VAN AND I HAD A BUDDY UNPLUG ONE PLUG AT A TIME AROUND THE TOP OF THE INTAKE.JUST TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY CHANGE IN THE IDLE.AND THERE WAS, EVERY SINGLE TIME WE UNPLUGGED SOMETHING. WE STARTED IT, THEN UNPLUGGED THE 4 PRONG PLUG RIGHT WHERE THE THRODLE IS AND THAT THRODLE SPRING, AND IT SHUT OFF. WE STARTED IT AGAIN AND UNPLUGGED THE OTHER ONE THATS DOWN BELOW THE THRODLE BODY, AGAIN IT SHUT OFF.THEN WE STARTED IT AGAIN AND UNPLUGGED THE ONE THATS STICKING OUT OF THE BLACK INTAKE HOSE GOING TO THE AIR FILTER, I BELIEVE ITS THE MASS AIR FLOW? THE FUNNY THING WITH THAT IS NOTHING CHANGED.JUST LIKE WHEN I UNPLUGGED THE O2 SENSOR. IT DIDN'T STALL, DIDN'T WANNA STALL.NOTHING CHANGED. SO WHILE IT WAS STILL RUNNING, WE PLUGGED IT BACK IN.AGAIN NOTHING CHANGED. SO IN SHORT, LOL, PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING U UNPLUG ON THE TOP OF THE INTAKE, THE VAN STALLS.EXCEPT FOR THE MAF SENSOR, AND THE O2 SENSOR. THEM ARE THE ONLY 2 WE CAN UNPLUG WHILE VANS RUNNING, AND NOTHING HAPPENS. NO STALLING, NO IDLE CHANGE...NOTHING! LOL..AS FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR, I DID CHANGE THAT A FEW MONTHS BACK BECAUSE IT LOOKED DUSTY AND OLD, SO I HAD A CERTIFIED SHOP PUT IT IN..THE THING IS, I HAD THIS PROBLEM WAY BEFORE I CHANGED ANYTHING. THE GUY I GOT IT FROM, HAD IN SITTING IN A GARAGE FOR LIKE 10 YRS!! I KNOW, RIDICULOUS! LOL, HE WAS THE ONLY OWNER, BOUGHT THE VAN BRAND-NEW IN 95/96..THEN HIS DAD PAST AWAY AND IT SAT.NEVER MOVED. WHILE THEY HAD IT THEY DID ALL THE CUSTOMIZATION, NOT ME.ITS PRETTY MUCH A SHOW TRUCK, NO DOUBT. NOW I LOOKED AROUND UNDER THE BATTERY AND THERE WAS THIS BLACK CANISTER LOOKING THING RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATTERY, AND IT DID HAVE 2 SMALL BLACK HOSES COMING OFF THE TOP OF IT, THEY BOTH RUN DOWN THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE BLOCK AND THEIR 4 INCHES SHORT OF THAT LITTLE GRAY BOX NEXT TO MY FUEL LINES.THE ONE WITH THE LITTLE NIPPLES BROKEN OFF.BUT THE HOSES WERE ALL Cracked AND SO DRY ROTED, THAT THEY WERE BRITTLE. Sorry for the delay on replying to you guys. been stupid busy with life in general, bought a house and finally found a 94 AWD astro van. you guessed it. LOL another project with Phantom rebel. she will be AWD pretty soon. other thing was done to it and pics and more small vids will soon be posted. the final vid will be long, but it will be worth it. from a v6 to a v8 then the analog dash to digital dash conversion, interior will be rebuild and camperized and will be converted into a AWD shorty Phantom rebel. can't wait to do this project. lots to and tons of good time to do it. can't wait to have her back on the road again. this will be a 2 years project. wish me luck
