Plecostomus are great fish for systems with windows. We use them in our showroom and at our homes.

What kind of plecostomus do you use? I was thinking of using bristle nose plecos.

They're kind of invasive in Florida. If I'm not mistaken. I would not raise them if I was there.

You should try breeding some for selling and for the acrylic viewing panel you could use cloth glued to magnets on both side
@vonponics
@vonponics 4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking to try and breed them later on, or basically when I can set up some breeding tanks. You think that cloth with the magnet will be fine with the curved tank window? I have one of those aquarium ones with the cloth and magnet, but didn't use it because I was not sure if it would cause any issues with the window its self (due to the curve). For cleaning the window right now I just plant to add some Bristle Nose Plecos.

@@vonponics maybe if you get a thick enough sponge on the magnet it will be able to make full contact with the curved acrylic but now that im thinking it can also give micro scratches to the acrylic and can damage it pretty badly it is a bad idea. Those magnetic cleaner are mainly used on glass. I would suggest you to go for the plecos first.

@@vonponics no worries! They’re really hardy but aggressive feeders so be mindful of introducing things like crayfish if you’re ever thinking of adding more critters.

Where did you get the main tank? How did you build it? We're in Florida and started one in a water collector but no filter or bubbles yet

The main tank I got for free from someone on craigslist. The polycarbonate sheet for the window I got from: www.theaquaponicsource.com/shop/fish-tanks/window-kits/fish-tank-window-kit/

Did you ever get a sucker fish? If so, how much difference did it make with the algae?
@vonponics

Yes I do have some Plecostomus that do make a significant difference. But I do have to take them out when the water gets to cold.

What is the max water temperature not to exceed with the blue gill? I live in south Texas near South Texas and I am constructing an aquaponics system inside my greenhouse.
@vonponics
@vonponics 3 жыл бұрын
They have a wide range of temperature tolerance. So are pretty hardy fish, which makes them excellent for aquaponics. They do prefer a temperature ranging from 65°F to 80°F but can survive up to 95°F.
@theeconomicrevolutionist
@theeconomicrevolutionist 3 жыл бұрын
@@vonponics Do you have any ideas how to keep water temp in the preference range inside a hot greenhouse?
@vonponics
@vonponics 3 жыл бұрын
During the summer. Definitely use some 50% shade cloth, that will reduce the green house air temp by a good amount. And still give the plants a good amount of sunlight for growing. After that ventilation and fans are good as well. Have some side vents and a top vent. If it is a small system, what you could do is freeze some water bottles and put them in the sump tank. Which can help bring the water temp down. You just don't want the temperature to fluctuate to drastically, otherwise it will cause stress on the fish.

Did you choose bluegill to eat them or just for their hardiness? How soon until they were big enough to eat?
@vonponics
@vonponics Жыл бұрын
For both reasons. But since I didn't power feed them they didn't grow very fast. I gave them all to a friend and plan to most likely only do koi and goldfish.
@walkingfish7123
@walkingfish7123 Жыл бұрын
@vonponics right on I thought about koi but want to eat them and I've never been a fan of eating carp. I've got some bluegill that hatched last spring they grew a decent amount but had them in an aquarium so didn't want to feed them heavy. Hopefully they will be eaters by fall
@vonponics
@vonponics Жыл бұрын
@@walkingfish7123 Nice, and ya I was originally intending to do fish for eating. But now I am mostly going to focus on growing veggies. So now I am probably going to do just koi and maybe some catfish. The catfish would be for eating and the koi just for producing waste.

Have you harvested any for food and do you have a video on that?
@vonponics
@vonponics 3 жыл бұрын
No I haven't harvested any of the fish for food yet, but I do plan to eventually. They don't grow that fast at the moment since I only feed them once a day. So if I want them to grow faster I will need to feed them more often.

Do they breed without nesting?
@vonponics
@vonponics 2 жыл бұрын
No I a believe they only breed by nesting. Its how they do it in the wild, so to get the best breeding results, its best to have it setup for them to be able to nest.
