Brilliant. No moving parts or complicated setups to make this work. Seems to work better than a bell siphon.

Your U siphon is done very well and I think it's the best working one Ive watched on youtube so far. I enjoyed your video and I think your setup looks great with the purple. So far mine is mostly black containers but I am going to make it pop with a cool theme.

Nice demo of the benefits of a u siphon. Another benefit (especially with an external u) is the ease to alter the tip over point....providing you havent glued your joints. I prefer using 5 to 6 wraps of teflon tape around the pipe. Gives a great seal but remains removable. Using 45° bends like you have also smooths the waterflow for a better start and is particularly useful in space constricted areas where you have to navigate obstacles like IBC frames. Well done.

Care to be CONSTRUCTIVE? I thought it was good, for getting some perspective and a closer look/better angle. A bit shaky and noisy sure. I tend to think that when someone spends hours just to give you valuable info, the right thing to do is be constructive in criticism.

Nice setup. Well done. I haven't had trouble at all with my bell siphons(running for about 3 years), but if I were to build another system that had room next to the beds for the u siphon, it would certainly get the nod. Less parts means more reliability.

Remove the solar pump and add a Ram pump but work on less wasted with higher pressure .

I like external U siphon. it won't take space from grow bed.

How do you deal with roots plugging up your drain pipe? I’ve not used an external siphon because of that problem. I love u-siphons. So much more reliable.
@hj86075 жыл бұрын
to eliminate the slow start up just make the entire u siphon out the smaller pipe . Your water tank is not filling at a fast enough rate to require, or start , a larger drain , anyhow (why you had to reduce the tail pipe diameter ) . A siphon rate of flow is restricted to the pipe lines section of smallest ID , anyhow, so the first larger pipes are not any advantage . You could then add a length at the drain end taking the discharge down to a lower level . That would increase the "head' height and increase the flow also (just using the smaller pipe ) .

@@mrs.hitchcocklifesciencean6599 Not sure why he used a larger diameter beyond the bottom piece in the bed (the feed cuts in bottom side were easier and larger ?) Using a Bell Syphon to regulate high and low of water level would take up less space (you most likely have seen this type of U syphon). If bell downpipe (in bell syphon itself ) were 3/4 and line out the side of tank (at level below highest bed level ) and all the way down would maximize the flow rate keeping syphon going full speed . Syphon rate is driven by the drop distance from top of upper reservoir to bottom of discharge pipe and limited by the smallest pipe diameter in the flow . (a section being larger than the rest won't increase the flow) If I missed the actual question or I did not explain clearly , ??

Long shot on a reply but just in case, have you had any issues with cleaning or having to clean the pipe that is in the grow bed (the one that controls the height of the water left in the grow bed once the siphon breaks)? If you have had to clean it or maintain it, are you having to remove all your grow medium in order to do so?

What starts the suction? I get that the air suction siphons the water, and then when it sucks air at the bottom the siphon is broken, But when the tank fills up from a separate line how does it know when to begin suction? What starts it? Or triggers it?

Informative and to the point! Very nice little place you have there (though two years ago now...). I have a few IBC's I plan to use for young fish in two stages. I take it the paint is for UV-protection? But, how to protect the inside of the tank? Have you found anything fish-friendly for this? All I can think of is putting EPDM pond liner on the inside. Anyone got any tips for this?

What's the point of sucking water from throughout the grow bed? And a venturi at some point is good for aeration.

Very nice. I noticed that the pipe with the slits looks like you have a T (where the brick is)? or is the slit pipe just straight? I hope that makes. Thanks! Russ

Russ Frederick the external t was just a support it looked like to me.

Is there a reason why you used different size pipes for the siphon?
@AquaponicsSystems6 жыл бұрын
It is all the same size until the final "drop". That must be a smaller diameter. Reducing the diameter is what helps to get the siphon started - without it, the siphon will not start. It can take a little bit of fidling to get it correct, but once you have it right, it runs well. Has been going now for over 2 years with no problems.
