Doooo it. They're great. A nice surprise I found is that if you get a superkick 1 batter and a regulator reso on your bass drum and then play the bass pedal off the head (don't bury it) the bass resonates for ages and sounds like an 808.

Why do I hate gospel chops? I'm not trying to be critical of this guy's skills. I understand how hard he's worked to get where he is. I'm just saying in general, I have a very negative reaction to most guys who play this style, and I'm not sure why that is. There's a few guys I like- Chris Coleman most notably.

You answered your own question. "Gospel" chops are an essential component in gospel music. By nature, those showy patterns and what you consider over playing actually have purpose in the appropriate setting, in essence in church. A worship service is intended to invoke excitement, exhilaration and to be uplifting. Combine those chops with encouraging chants of "don't give up", "keep on believing", "trust in God", "have faith" and an incredible thing happens. In the African American church its refer to as "feeling the spirit" or "catching the spirit". When genuine, it brings about a spontaneous emotional reaction that cannot duplicated. You hate it because you've never experienced this and don't understand it. A good gospel musician knows how and when to play like this. What you see on YT are just exhibitions of that style, they don't play like that all the time.

So maybe there is something to at least that part of what you said. But, it isn't because I've "never experienced" a movement of the Holy Spirit.
