This is a very good video Joey. I kept fish many years ago and used an underground filter for my aquariums. At the time it was the least expensive way to keep an aquarium clean between water changes. That's what the owners of the fish store told me anyway, lol. I love how clean your aquariums look, they are amazing! I only had one 10 gallon and one 5 and a half gallon aquarium, so maybe that was all I needed. I was very new to the hobby so I took what advice I could get. Thank you so much for sharing your information with us Joey. I love your aquariums!

Joey, thanks man, I’m hooked! I discovered this channel whilst thinking & exploring the possibilities throughout the aquascaping/ aquarium realm and I’ve held back for a couple years. I am 6 days into cycling my FIRST TANK. 5gal/ 19L. 1 plant, unique to me driftwood, quality substrate and water conditioner. Took the time and enjoyed every second of it and every minute I look over at a little ecosystem I’m helping to create and keep tidy. Still learning and no real danger to aqua life until I get it right. It is an absolutely wonderful feeling. Even just the slight adjustable flow running through my Rotala and the look of the tank under lights at night is magical enough but also knowing it will constantly fill and grow and some other residents will eventually move in. witnessing and enhancing Natural Behaviour I’m babbling on but, I’m being honest. CANNOT believe what it’s already done for me. Some long standing habits of mine are starting to get properly questioned. A big bonus. Surely, we are ALL different and we’ll get our own version of what it means but for me, it’s working wonders and I feel expanding creatively cognitive something something... cheers

I am so thankful that I have. i have two aquariums and I am new to this hobby, only couple months in, and I have finally found the solution I have been looking for. I have two same sized aquariums and the same number of same fish in both tanks. Both tanks have been going for the same time but recently the bottom tank water has become cloudy and after several water changes I just can't get the water to be as clear as it once was or like the top tank. I can't wait to add this to my tank and fingers cross it works! Thank you!

Joey I know you’ve discussed this before but I think a topic that is always relevant especially to newcomers is how to deal with chlorine and chloramine... I read about people still using the bucket system just to treat the water before introducing it to the tank. The python has made my life so much better but because I’m anal about these things I put an inline carbon canister on top of treating the tank when I do water changes. I think if you made an in depth video on how to deal with both and different methods to do so, we will all greatly appreciate it. Thank You Joey, you have inspired me greatly and fish keeping is so therapeutic.

Serious question, is there a better alternative to polyester filter floss stuff? Polyester is not biodegradable and using it as filtration makes it essentially a one use product then it gets dumped into a landfill. I understand that sponges are made of the same material, but the lifetime use of those are far greater then the polyester floss.

Much of the industry is things like this that look the same because they essentially are. The main argument for buying these things within the industry was touched on in the video and that is knowing what is in it. Additives you don't want to have in the aquarium but that serve a purpose for what the item was marketed for. With batting that could be the mold resistance mentioned or fire retardant for example. Some scrub pads that look just like the aquarium ones might have soaps in them. It's great when you can identify real savings options like this and still be sure it will be safe for your system. Great video. I love the energy and passion for the hobby!

I hope that the volume of water and plants will help it out (: Either way, thanks for the advice! I'll make sure to keep researching to give it the best chance (:

Nice thing is a lot of the diy projects Joey features can be easily adapted to aqautic turtle set-ups. I have a 50gallon aquatic turtle setup and I use the same bagged batting from Wal*Mart in my internal filter. Granted with my setup I'm replicating a shallow stream system at about five inches deep for my yellow bellied slider so I can get away with running a filter rated for twenty to forty gallons. My plans are to upgrade to a seventy-five gallon setup and do a pond system with about two feet of water now that my girl has grown out of the juvenile stage. This also means upgrading my existing filtration and I'm planning to do a five gallon bucket diy canister filter. Joey has been an absolute lifesaver for me.

But what you are not considering is i have to raise my children and live a normal life outside of youtube and taking care of this gallery. In 1 year, Dedicating a min of a 3 day trip every single month would amount to a 36 days away from family that costs me about $50,000(1+ month out of 12 away from my kids). While i do travel, its not often and i maximize it by meeting as many at once as i can. I feel like i do enough for my viewers. @@migueleespinosa2632 I was concerned that increased water flow would be difficult for discus, and I'm not sure of the mechanics/angles/equipment needed to get that to work. I already have a HOB filter on the left side of the tank, and a lava rock air stone and Ziss filter on the right side, to make sure the water stays circulating. However, it's not enough to pick up what accumulates on the bottom, and I'm not sure what kind of flow parameters the discus will tolerate easily. :( It's not a monster tank, so any changes I make will be significant.

It's great to revisit the basics Joey! I started using this after seeing you changing some on one of you sumps. I also have a medium sponge underneath as my sump is different to yours and when I change the floss every couple of days, some of the debris can escape. This is then caught by the sponge which I wash out every couple of weeks. Brilliant idea, cheaper over there than here in the UK but well worth it. xx

Well . . . unfortunately, plastic works in aquariums because it isn't eco friendly. Plastic doesn't bio degrade in the filter, and typically eco friendly usually means it is bio degradable so it doesn't indefinitely pile up in the environment. Filters degrade biological material, hence an eco friendly mechanical will be eaten up into nitrates (or worse, and cause an ammonia spike from the large amount of degrading biological material).

It works very simple, have a clean mesh on stand by and replace every week. Hot wash the dirty one and leave it ready for next week. Simple, cost effective, last a life time.

Hmm since you're talking about the videos 'you're going to do'. What about getting the bio starters under the microscope, you said this when you had some 'free equipment' from a company........love your videos. I found your channel last year because I was thinking about getting in to aquariums, but decided against it for now.

I’d also enjoy peeping at those tiny things I’m 1 week into my first tank and I will tell you, I am hooked already. I was hesitant for a year also but I am gaining benefits and joy with every minute I stare/ prepare/ plan next additions to improve quality and aesthetics etc. We all will experience differences but me personally, a lot of positives are already with me. Time and space are important I think. Just a bit of encouragement from a fellow tuber

Joey... I followed your tip of stuffing a Tetra 40i internal-hanging filter with Poly-Fil, and using it as a water polisher. But when I initially setup my 29-gal, I took it to another level: I half-filled it with a folded & rolled piece of Poly-Fil, then top it off with a nylon knee-high stocking filled with bio-media. Once cycled/established, I used the arrangement without issue until I could install a filtration system that would be large enough to meet my satisfaction... into which I'll transfer the "bag" of bio-media. If I ever find myself in need of a inexpensive, quick-&-simple "complete" basic filter setup, I'll gladly use this method again. And I'll recommend it to those looking for the same.😊

@paleozoic
@paleozoic 5 жыл бұрын
The problem will come from the organic media itself degrading the becoming nitrate or worse, ammonia. It's probably going to pollute your aquarium and cause ammonia spikes if you leave it in for more than a few days.
@jonstfrancis
@jonstfrancis 5 жыл бұрын
@@paleozoic I doubt that though, it would only be a thin strip and would be replaced regularly. And with adequate filtration the bacteria would break it down to nitrates anyway.

I'm not against looking for an eco-friendly alternative, but I don't think there are any alternatives mechanical media that's worth using, which is unfortunate. If you're catering to a more beginner-friendly audience like Joey is doing in this video, biodegradables shouldn't be used by beginners, it's just asking for disaster and will chase them away from the hobby when all their fish get poisoned and perish. A thin strip of bio degradable media isn't going to withstand being blasted by water 24 hours a day. The water will punch a hole through it and it wouldn't function as mechanical filtration anymore. Even thick layers of plastic batting isn't immune if you leave it in long enough. This stuff wasn't made for aquariums in mind to begin with. The amount of beneficial bacteria is depended on how much food/waste is regularly available in the aquarium. Having an excessively large filter isn't going to function any better than a small filter if the routine amount of waste produced isn't very high. Also consider that you'll be throwing away the filter media, there will be this gap every week or months where you don't have rotting batting to keep all the bacteria alive. If I feed a handful of food per day, there is only enough bacteria to convert a handful of food into nitrates. If I suddenly start feeding three times per day, now I get ammonia.

Yes, but so is removing anything you have in your tank, like decor, this is meant to be mechanical filtration, not biological. So you can remove it.

Please excuse my ignorance, I have kept fish many years ago, mainly Koi and used undergravel filters and my water's were all Gin Clear. My QUESTION is.... Are all man made sponges fine to use in filtration? PLUS... If you're replacing your polyester and mechanical media every few day's aren't you getting rid of the 'BACTERIA' needed for the upkeep of the filtration system? Once again please excuse my ignorance. Thank you Joey for another "FANTASTIC VIDEO", take care my friend 👍😷👍

I always use it as the final stage of mechanical filtration. It will very quickly clog up if you don't. It's also easy to change it out when it the last item in the filter, and you do have to change it often.
