I absolutely loved this! As a science teacher, I get to see many examples of the things that you mentioned in this talk on a daily basis. In fact, the reason that I got my biology degree was from my hobby in invertebrate culturing.

Thank you, Dr. Liz Marchio. I really enjoyed your presentation. I am far from being a scientist but have always been curious to be an aquarist hobbyist. I always tell friends and family it's my "science project"!! And yes!!! I am a scientist now! Hehe! You've pointed out all the critical points of the aquarist field. Awesome!!! A Fantastic lecture topic. It's really just a fascinating set of observation in general. And helps frame why some many of us in the hobby have STEM backgrounds. I knew through my own experience how my early aquarium hobby with planted tanks lead to my own B.S. I did not realize it was a common thread. One more reason to keep making Aquarists :)

When I hear someone say the hobby is overwhelmingly white and male, I just think about all the Cubans down here in Miami I know with Reef tanks.

I'm 20min in and it seems to only be about the observation that fish people like fish. Also the diversity of pet hobbies it's not a bias act. I do many things rc cars , hunting, camping, rc planes, rocketry, automotive stuff, fish tanks. All old white dudes, it's just different habits and interests. My father got me into most of these things.

She had some good points, like sustainability and responsibility. However, gloating over her degree and speaking down to the audience as if we were children wasn't appreciated. Then, she proceeded to make broad generalizations of the hobby and scorned white males for enjoying the hobby. Trust us, we don't care about gender race or politics. We just want a place away from all that. It's a hobby where we get to relax, unwind, and step away from the real world. The more people we have in the community, the better. You can't blame a race and gender for cultural differences or the composition of a population on a small group of people. We didn't choose this outcome. We just want to have fun. That being said, she seems knowledgeable and hooked to the hobby. If she just stuck to that, she would've done great.
