I've been in the hobby for decades and watched a lot of aquarium video's but this is the only one I've seen that describes this type of heater setup. It's such a great idea I don't know why other aquarium channels haven't mentioned it. I was using the Inkbird temperature controller with 2 three hundred watt heaters on my 240. As soon as I saw this, I got a two hundred watt and set it up as described. Let's hope I never have to find out if all three fail safes work. Thanks for the info.

Found this video after looking for 'Aquarium Temperature Controller', I have always used 2 small heaters, but one recently broke (in the off position) so I am using a larger spare heater on its own and wanted an extra level of safety if that failed, this goes beyond that. I didn't think of putting the big one on the controller and leaving the small one as a back up on its own. I was going to buy another small heater and controller and run them both off the controller, now I just need to buy a controller. Great video thank you very much.

Great video. Heater failure happend to my tank just 2 days ago. When feeding my African Cichlids early morning, I found the water temperature in my 800 liter tank (211 gallon) was 34.5c (94F). The heater was stuck on full blast. I am so glad I noticed it on time. Fish were still fine, actually they seemed as playful as ever... Thank you so much for this video. Sharing your knowledge has really helped me understand. After almost 30 years, I am just getting back into having a fish tank. I have a 66 gallon tank that was given to me. The heater (Aqueon, that has a dial on top) i just purchased is not keeping consistent temperatures. I have two seperate digital thermometers (battery operated so i wanted a back up). When i noticed the temp drop, I used my digital meat thermometer to test the water temp, incase the other thermometers were defective. I am now looking at changing the heating set up to digital with a backup scenario that you just described. What I am considering is: Main heater: hygger submersible double quartz 300 watt Controller: inkbird ITC 306T I am not sure what wattage or brand of digital heater back up heater to get for the second. I do travel, so i want a solid back up for this tank. Would it be best to get the same heater, just set the temps differently? What would you recommend? Thank you in advance for your time to help me out.

@KaveManAquatics4 жыл бұрын
Lol, that’s a great question. There is no standard number as they all grow differently, eat and poop differently. In my opinion it depends on your maintenance consistency. If you can only do 1 water change per week then by the end of the week you shouldn’t reach a nítrate level that’s harmful for your fish. If you do then you either need to do more maintenance or lighten up the bio-load...it’ll take you some experimenting to see what fits your style.

Kev, apparently it’s tank day. I have a lot of questions about fish keeping. I have 3 heaters in this tank. Unfortunately, I bought these heaters before watching this video and they are all capable of heating this tank by themselves. I bought the 3rd because it’s nearly impossible to read the set temperature and therefore set the desired temperature on the 1st 2. I set them all to eighty. The two usually don’t turn on. I don’t know if the 3rd is heating or not but, it says the tank temperature is 88+. The temperature outside today is 79. I don’t have the home heat on and I’m not cooking. Where’s this excess heat coming from?

Great addition!! Have you ever used the temp controller as the final kill safe?? Say setting the 200w at 76 the 300w at 78 and the temp controller at 82. This keeps the heaters working as designed up until the failure point and you still have master shut off control with your controller. I recently purchased a smart heater that allows remote monitoring, so I would want the heater powered on unless an issue raises.

the problem arises when the heaters thermoatat fails and stays on. so its better to set the controller at a higher (max u wanna go) temperature than the heater. Therefore when the heater fails, we have a backup to shut the power off. there is more chance of the heater to fail than the controller.

Hey brother I finally got my tank set up and added my prime and stability. Not really ready to buy fish yet maybe in a month should I still add stability for a full week or just the one time 🤔 will my bio build up over the next month and be ready in that month for fish? Also the day my fish get here what other products do you recommend I use for seachem b4 adding fish thanks
@KaveManAquaticsАй бұрын
Adding Stability wont help much if you dont have an ammonia source to feed the fish. try adding about 2ppm of ammonia directly from a bottle and then add stability daily to start populating with beneficial bacteria 😁

@KaveManAquatics ok got it when should I do my master testing, and are test strips any good vs the master kit don't really want to use a master kit everyday and how often should use the master kit once the cycling is done or can that be a monthly task with daily test strings thanks

Thanks for the info! Your content is SOO helpful and accessible! One quick question, what should we set the continuous heater timer for? At first we thought it should be at 24 hrs thinking that it meant that it would continue to monitor the temp 24 hours a day which is what we wanted. We got woken up to a 2am alarm saying “E5:Continuous Heating Alarm” Starting to wonder if the timer is more for how long the heater is on at a time? If so, what happens after that time frame. Does it just cut off and then turn back on when the temp hits the bottom target? Thanks again for everything you do!!

Now that's scary i guess since he said he replies to all comments and you asked this 9 months ago i can't see a reply then I've no luck either 😂

@@jacquelinemcmillan2793 I guess that’s true, but this is also a 3 year old video that I just commented on 9 months ago, in the sea of hundreds of videos he has posted with probably thousands of comments it’s no surprise that some comments will get missed.

This is a very informative video and I hope to resolve my temperature issues. However, I have a woodstove in our front room with various tanks in rooms near and in the front room. I have lost multiple fish recently due to overheating. I've tried different things and so far, I feel like all I have accomplished is a bruised head (from banging it against the wall). What is your opinion with the temperature controller and the woodstove? Will that help resolve the issue?

Hi Kev. Im a little late to the party😊 I see this video is 4 years old.I have installed the Inkbird 306-A on 3 tanks. One alarms every morning at 4:00 am with E5 error. It is 29 gallons with one 150W heater set at 77 degrees. Range is set for 68 F to 81 F. Any suggestions how to program the controller so it doesnt false alarm?
@KaveManAquatics2 ай бұрын
Honestly, I never set the alarms. They annoyed me early on and I told myself I'd figure them out later, But I ended up just leaving them off lol 🤷♂️ I figure its still going to turn on and off when its supposed to, I dont need to be alerted. Sorry I couldnt help with this one.
@Jazzy-v7g2 ай бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics With the set up you describe in the video I see how the alarms are a mute feature. Thank you for your reply! I am setting all 3 tanks up as you suggest. Totally makes sense. Love your sharing of information-- so helpful and easy to understand. Have an awesome day!

Great video and information .Could you also suggest the best place to obtain supplies, Pet-co or online . Where do you obtain your supplies from ???
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
I buy 80% of my supplies from amazon. Its just much more efficient. Links to everything I use is in the description below the videos. The other 20% I buy from my LFS just to support.

@@KaveManAquatics Hey can I ask you - some say don't get an overpowered heater because it could fry your tank badly if it stays on. Some say get an overpowered heater so that it doesn't have to come on and off as much and wears out slower. Do you think heater one should be rated for the tank size, or can it be rated up? Thanks!!!

What if its a Coldwater tank that holds goldfish? I have bad air conditioning in my house and it gets super hot inside...sometimes triple digits. I have a vivosun brand thermostat how do I connect that to the fans hooked up to my tank?
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
I dont think it works in reverse. The controller only kicks on when temperature is lower than the setting, not higher than the setting.
@Ace.G13 жыл бұрын
Hello, so I have the exact same temperature controller, but I keep getting the alarm like everyday that temperature dropped and is not staying on the same temperature at all
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
It could be the heaters you have connected to them. Make sure the temperature set on the heater itself is correct. Just because controller turns them on if sensor on heater is set to low heater itself wont turn on.
