Back in July I filled ALL 3 stages of my canister filter with 3kg of biohome ultimate. hopefully the inner core wouldn’t be affected by the flow. Added a small canister pre filter with corse, medium and fine sponges to protect the outer core from clogging up. Six months later nitrates are negligible at around 5ppm.

Great to see you having this results. I have used every media under the sun , including making my own media with clay /river sand and pool filter sand then baking it. From my tests over the years most filter medias work , what I think is the holy grail is water hyacinth in my refugium I can truly say can reduce nitrates. But plants are key to this and I noticed you have plants in your tank. Please dont get me wrong bio home is excellent and would also recommend it.

I've been using Biohome Ultimate in an FX4 and 2 Eheim canisters in my 150 gallon aquarium with nothing more than sponge prefilter and filter floss and I have seen zero ammonia, zero nitrite, and very slow nitrate. My tank is stocked with 4 Frontosa at about 6", a 12" rope fish, 2 misc cichlid, a 8" plecto, and a juvenile fahaka puffer. Simply the best media available, period! My water stays crystal clear all the time. I do 50% water changes about every other week and my nitrates stay consistently under 20 ppm. If youre on the fence about getting Biohome, jump down and run out and get this stuff.

Hi A A glad you have had success with the media for NO3 control. I have a nice Discus tank myself, 54 gal. planted corner tank, and I couldn't get this media to work in that particular mode of nitrate reduction. It wouldn't work at all here, stacking it against a control, and with slow flow rates. No reduction. Matrix did nothing either, btw. But my good news is that i put in a sulfur denitrator and it works well in my freshwater setup. It will process 16 gallons a day. I use 1 litre a sulfur and a 1/3 litre of crushed coral to buffer up the acidic sulfur. l drip it through the reactor at 5ml/ 7 seconds, or 2.5 litres/hour. No nitrates out of the effluent at this swift drip rate. It raised the pH of the tank to 7.3, from 6.6 but the Discus are still doing great.

I am very happy that I have been running BioHome Ultimate for almost six months. I am just starting to see nitrates dropping from their normal levels, between water changes. Nothing else has changed during this time; same stock, same feeding schedule, same plants growing and getting trimmed twice a month. I also attribute my happiness with the filtration, to setting up my Hydor canister, just like the Pond Guru teaches. Love my BioHome!

You have touched on something nobody seems to mention. Price. I looked at it as an option, seller recommends 2-4 lbs per gal depending on bioload. 10 lbs for my 75 gal tank is available on ebay for about $154. Seriously?! I would love to try it but that is multiple times more than other very reputable options that I doubt fall short in comparison by that great a degree. The recommended amount of Matrix, for example is $21. Also very favorably reviewed. Not to mention pumice and lavender, as you are using with great success. About ten bucks.

@@arjay0490 Yeah, cost value is a big issue that seems to get glossed over in most of these videos on YT. I suspect the biohome IS the best, but how much better is it than say lava rock? You don't get enough independent fishkeepers able to provide some lengthy data such as this video, unfortunately. If the costs aren't an issue, I suppose you could buy gold media to filter. But most people keeping fish aren't looking to drop 150 dollars on 5 lbs of media when they could drop 10 dollars on 5 lbs of a different media and get 80% of the results.

How much do you have in your canister? They recommend 1 kilo per 100l for your average tropical tank, more for heavily stocked or big fish, sometime hard to fit that in a canister to get the full nitrate reduction going on. Still an excellent media even if you don't get the full cycle going.

Thanks, I have put some biohome mini in one of the trays of one of my filters about 4 years ago, definitely has not changed let alone crumbled. Probably too small a size and too little of it to de-nitrify. I have been planning, in about a year when my discus will be 2 years old and fully grown, to gradually swap the alfagrog for the bigger biohome. Until then I will carry on with daily water changes so not much point. WOULD BE INTERESTING IF YOU SWAPPED THE MEDIA IN THE PUFFER TANK FOR BIOHOME AND CHART THE EFFECT OVER ANOTHER YEAR! That would probably give an even better indication of how effective it is at reducing nitrates to molecular nitrogen. Thank you anyway for your effort so far, Ciao from Italy

Just a couple tips, in order to really find out if your nitrates are being effected, you need to establish what your daily or weekly nitrate production is in the tank before the biohome went in the tank assuming you are not increasing the bioload yourself. Ie after a water change, you test for nitrates, wait whatever time you normally take before the next water change, and then take the nitrates again right before you change the water. During this week you need to make sure you feed the fish exactly the same amount of food each day. You also need to make sure you change the exact volume of water out each water change. Do this for a couple weeks, and you will establish what your accurate nitrate production is per day or week. Last, the api liquid test is not the best tool. The LaMotte nitrate test kit will give you very specific nitrate levels between 0-40ppm which is great for fish tanks. Also, plants will definitely have an effect on nitrates if they are fast growers- especially if your fish to plant ratio is very low. To scientifically test biohome and it’s effect on nitrates, you would need a plant free aquarium. I’ve never tried biohome, but did try seachem matrix which has the same claim, anaerobic denitrification occurring deep in the media. It never had any effect on nitrates. Was a great nitrifying bacteria media, just didn’t’ see any reduction in my nitrate production. I’ve read some reviews that people swear by biohome, and I’ve read many reviews saying that it didn’t work for nitrate reduction. So who knows, but it’s hard to take anyone’s word for it when they are trying to sell it.... My last point, to really achieve effective denitrification in a tank at any significant level, the facultative anaerobic bacteria in anoxic conditions need a carbon source. It’s the only way the reduction of nitrate back to N2 gas can occur. Unless you have a deep sand or soil bed with heavy amounts of organics, you would need to dose with ethanol or use a biopellet reactor to really have an effect on nitrates. The problem with dosing alcohol or using biopellets is that a lot of bacterial build up will occur in the tank causing black spots in various places and it will tend to quickly clog your mechanical filtration. Sorry, not trying to rant, I’ve just been chasing the no water change/ nitrate free system for years.

Biohome lowers nitrate levels until plants suffer. Nitrate is harmless at the levels you were monitoring. I use biohome in rehabilitation tanks, but it's awfully expensive, and it does little to add any vale. I have about another 6 planted tanks and would never recommend Biohome because ideally EI aims for nitrate levels of between 20-30ppm. Biohome lowers this too fast. Toxicity to fish occurs at around 1200ppm - so the product is fairly pointless. It is still great for aerobic processes, assuming that it does not block. If you ask me, and having tried it, I think it is just wasting money on false science.

I use Biohome ultra filter media because it's chunky size allows for easy cleaning plus it doesn't impede water flow through my canister filter baskets as much as similar, smaller media (Eheim "coco-pops" & Seachem Matrix, etc) would do. I also, optimistically, hoped it might perform a so called full cycle and reduce my nitrates. However, after 2 years of using Biohome, it absolutely does not do that -- so please don't buy this expensive stuff on that basis (there's never been any scientific proof, just anecdotal/unreliable). I'll keep using it for the useful (to me) reasons I mention .......but please don't waste your money on the mistaken belief this product has any influence on your nitrate levels !

My tank is 5 foot - I must have been watching too much King of DIY and exaggerated its size if I said 6ft! My overflows are Ultra Reef overflows, which do work great - free up space in the tank not needing a weir etc, but the only problem was that when they were built they were installed at exactly the same height which made it a nightmare to get them quiet - once I sorted that they run silently so if you are considering them, make sure you stagger the height of them slightly. I've been using Biohome since day one on my big tank.

There is the possibility of the pores getting blocked if you’re only using sponges and no filter floss before it. Plus biohome isn’t a magic solution to a poorly setup aquarium. Isn’t it a fact that if you have a aerobic cycled moderately stocked tank then remove all fish that the bacteria load falls to the point you could not safely restock to same level all at once?? Yes we know that’s true. Now if that’s true for aerobic does it make sense the same is true for anaerobic bacteria. Meaning. You want a small very small amount of nitrates existing after it’s reduction levels off. Those little buggers must have food as they need it. Or die off occurs and ……. Well you know the rest of the story. This is more of a question then a statement.
