AQUAZOO Loebbecke Museum: GUNDIS in bedside rug position 😍 | zoos.media

At Aquazoo Loebbecke Museum, you can often see them: Gundis in bedside rug position. The cuddly rodents lay down in this special way, but there are many more interesting stories about the Gundis. Sandra Honigs, a true expert for gundis, explains in the interview all sorts of exciting facts about the beautiful animals.
But not only the bedside rug position is interesting because what many do not know is that Gundis are comb rats and so have a comb for their gorgeous coat always literally at hand. This makes a lot of sense in their habitat.
Ctenodactylus gundi, as the species is known by its scientific name, occurs in the northern Sahara. The species is not threatened, but a very important ambassador of this habitat. Many people think that the desert is inanimate or associates habitat only with reptiles.
Gundis are now, however, fur wearers and have a remarkably dense coat, which sounds absurd in the desert. In fact, thanks to their fur, they have a very good camouflage.
Although their proportions are similar to guinea pigs, they are the physically largest among the most recent comb rats of which there are five in all. Gundis, which are kept in the Aquazoo Loebbecke Museum, are also called real comb rats in German.
There are a total of nine husbandries of this species in Germany, plus 18 husbandries in zoological facilities accredited by EAZA. In the Aquazoo Loebbecke Museum Duesseldorf, the studbook is maintained and the experts coordinate all these husbandries. That's not so easy as Sandra Honigs reports.

Sehr gern geschehen 😊 Ja, die sind auch schwer zu sehen, weil es sie leider nicht so häufig gibt. In Deutschland sind es nur neun Zoos, die sich für die Haltung der Tiere entschieden haben. Aber es lohnt sich wirklich, die Kleinen zu beobachten. Zwar muss man viel Geduld mitbringen, weil sie sehr gemütlich sind, aber dafür auch etwas ganz Besonderes. 🙂 Ebenso ein schönes Wochenende.
