I have this ruler and love it! Before, my flying geese were always a bit “off”. It really makes sense for me to make the blocks a bit oversized and trim down. The trim tool really helps line up the geese properly.

Thank you for sharing this information with us! There are so many rulers on the market and sometimes it’s not easy to determine which is the best purchase. Whether you are short on storage space or just wanting to stretch your quilting cash as far as possible. This ruler seems to accomplish both!

I love Creative Grids rulers. I have several, not this one yet, but I intend to get it. Your demo has convinced me! Their rulers are so versatile and most of them have multiple uses, or at least multiple sizes for the same block, such as the Pineapple rulers. If you want accuracy in your blocks, Creative Grids can't be beat.

Looks like maybe you trimmed down to the next size down from the first one? I think that's why someone commented about all the waste fabric. Still, that's a good example of how it works and what to watch for. I like getting 4 flying geese for sawtooth stars.

I love this ruler and it’s the only thing I use now. I appreciate your great tutorial. One of the things I really like in addition to its accuracy is that the cutting measurements are printed directly on the ruler, because it seems easy for me to not have the directions at hand when I need them.

Thank you! I have that ruler, but as a new quilter, I’ve been struggling with it. I think my problem was that I could not find the measurements that I needed printed on the ruler. Now I realize that I was searching for unfinished measurements, when I should have been using finished measurements. Thanks so much for a great tutorial! Quilting is my brain challenge….for my 70 yr old brain. Certainly learning new things!!! Yay!

Thank You…There are so many different tools out there and it is hard to decide which ruler or tool that I would find more helpful than another. Trying them out can be expensive, too. Sometimes when I finally take the plunge and buy a tool/ruler to help me with my quilting process, I then cannot figure out how to use the item properly. Your informative videos are very helpful with my quilting tools/ruler problems. Thank you for taking the time and effort to give us the information we need to be successful quilters and to help make the process more enjoyable. 🪡🧵

I like this ruler too for making flying geese. It isn’t so left handed friendly though as the cut is on the top and the right hand side. I compensate by lining up the ruler then spinning it around to cut on the left hand side. I did request Creative Grids create a left handed version of this ruler. They have created other left handed rulers…this one I would really like. Thanks for reminding me that the one at a time cutting instructions are in the ruler instructions.

Sherri, you might want to put an updated note in your description. It appears (from your mat) that you are making a 3x6 unit but are trimming (and stating) 2x4 which makes it appear that there is far more waste than is typical for these rulers. I love this method (I like to call it the little foxes method!) due to its speed and accuracy. I use another tool, with excellent results. I like to glue baste my small squares in on the diagonal of the large square. It works well for high production (and distortion/shift/prick- free sewing). YOu can phase your work without your units getting stuck together and the pieces staying put.

I was surprised by the amount of waste. I’ve used Eleanor Burns’s flying geese rulers for this method of making flying geese for about 20 years. They work perfectly, and there’s no way to accidentally cut on the wrong line. The drawback is that each ruler is for just two sizes.

The quilt in a day ruler is slightly different in its approach (I prefer this method over that). You should follow the instructions on the QID ruler. I have that ruler (bought early in my quilting journey). I use it for other things, but NEVER flying geese after adopting this method.

my instructions say 2.5" x 4.5" flying geese "unfinished". So if I trim down to 2x4 using this tool I will be too short with the rest of the pieces. I am making a sawtooth star. I guess I'm so confused on when to trim.
@catecoleman9852
@catecoleman9852 11 ай бұрын
2x4 written on the ruler is the finished size. So yes if you want a 2.5x4.5 you use that marking when trimming. They account for the seam allowance. Make a sample and measure it after so you can cut confidently :)
