Aquitard -
Also called a leaky confining layer, or leaky confining bed. Aconfining unit that retards but does not prevent the flow of water to or from an adjacent aquifer. An aquitard is the less-permeable bed in a stratigraphic sequence.
An aquitard does not readily yield water to wells or springs but may serve as a storage unit for groundwater and can transmit water slowly from one aquifer to another. Most water-bearing formations yield some water and therefore are classified as either aquifers or aquitards.
