Composed by Claude Debussy, performed by Maxine Molin-Rose
This was written as a piece for the solo piano in the late Romantic period. The piece has several clear themes, but doesn’t follow any sort of traditional structure. Additionally, the piece has a fairly complex harmonic structure, frequently changing keys. Lastly, the arabesque serves to evoke a certain emotion; one of peacefulness and calm, due to the soft use of the petal and soothingly repetitive triplets in the right hand. It can also be argued that the piece served not to evoke a strong emotion, but to suggest and create an atmosphere. Arabesques, after all, were supposed to remind the listener of the beauty and fluidity of Arabic architecture, not to tell a story.
