This song, Ojos Asi, is one of her hits released back in 1999 when she was about 22 or 23 years old. She is now about 45 or 46 years old. She and some of the backup singers do a few lines in Arabic in this song. She is part Lebanese and her grandmother taught her how to belly dance. The album this song is on, Donde Estan Los Ladrones, produced six or seven hits that stood the test of time. Excellent.

One of Shakira’s musical trademarks is bringing in Middle Eastern flavors to many of her songs, but Ojos Así is definitely her ultimate tribute to her half-Lebanese heritage, and it even features some Arabic lyrics (in this version, the Arabic is what the male vocals sang - all of Shakira’s vocals were in Spanish, though she does sing that part in the album version). Here are some other facts about the song that might be helpful: 1. This song was actually the first time Shakira brought her now-signature bellydancing into her career. She was very rock-focused before this song, but ultimately, Ojos Así in 1999 would be foreshadowing for her bellydance-focused crossover with Whenever, Wherever in 2001. This performance was from 2003, the opening number of her first world tour after her crossover success. 2. If you check out the music video for the song from 1999, you’ll hear the “Single Version”, which is a bit more electronic than the actual album version from 1998 (which is a bit heavier on the Middle Eastern influence, but still more electronic than the live version you just saw). That said, as you noticed, the live version takes the song’s Middle Eastern vibes to a whole other (and more organic) level. The 2006 tour version even starts with a classic Egyptian song as an intro. I’m basically an expert about this song (and Shakira’s music in general, but Ojos Así on another level), so let me know if you have any questions! :)

It's in Spanish, not Arabic although in another performance I do believe she does sing some verses in Arabic. Her father had Lebanese roots hence her love of belly dancing and this style of music. She is also very clever and has an IQ of 140 (she wrote her first poem at age 4), speaks four languages fluently (Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese) and can play the guitar, drums, percussion and harmonica. She's an incredible artist that has managed to stay relevant since the early 90s, although outside of LatinAmerica you might not have been too aware. For example, Ojos Asi was from the 90s. If you watch Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (English version is called Objection) you'll see her playing the guitar.
