Design your Universe at retrospect would be my recommendation for the next one, just because it's overwhelming and Simone is on fire. Also chasing the dragon, for a completely different set of vocal fireworks and a beautiful song

The one and only Arien van Weesenbeek on drums! He was drumming - bashing furniture with spoons and forks - from the age of 3 before he found his dad's drum-kit!.... Simone = 👼🔥!..... yes, I had a beer! 🍻 Beer o'clock in Australia!..... Another vote for "Chasing the Dragon" from this show! Metal is Family!

Epica is a Dutch band...the founder, guitarist/vocalist Mark Jansen, was originally in a band called After Forever, whose vocalist was a young lady named Floor...who now sings for Nightwish! Such a tangled web...

Great reaction. More Epica please. Consign to Oblivion (live at the Zenith), Chasing the Dragon, Design your Universe, Kingdom of Heaven, Beyond the Matrix, Essence of Silence, Abyss of Time (brandnew song); I mean, there are 7 albums to choose from. And there’s MaYaN you need to check out. Saints don’t die is a great starting point

MORE EPICA PLEASE !!!! This band is rock solid and never disappoints. Every member participates in the creating, composing and rocording process. Coen ( keyboard guy) makes the orchestra and choir arrangements and is present during the recordings ( yes, they record with actual musicians. They do not use samples) to check everything sounds perfect. Isaac ( lead guitars) and Rob ( bass) compose the majority of the melodies and song structures. Mark ( growls) and Simone write the lyrics and Ariën ( drums) elevates and puts everything together. This is why they always come up with new and fresh ideas. You should check out their latest video/single " Abyss of Time" from the upcoming album Omega.

I just LOVE your reactions. Finally someone who reacts to an Epica song that is not Sancta Terra with Floor. Epica has been my favorite band throughout my teen years for all the reasons you mentioned. I would love to see your reaction on "Consign to Oblivion", and "Facade of Reality" which has much more layers and deep philosophy in it. The band founder is Mark, the guitarist in the left, which also created a former band with Floor, named After Forever. After Forever was also a symphonic metal band, with unique lyrics that tries to tell the story of human ugliest behaviors (and even one song about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Itzhak Rabin's speech of the Oslo agreements- "Forlorn Hope").

Sadly the orchestra and choir was a one off. Courtesy of their 10th birthday, 😀 It was in my hometown, Eindhoven, and yes I was there on one of the nights, 3 hours worth of music even though Simone was three months pregnant. Shows how much love and craft it takes to put this together

Epica is generalized as a Symphonic metal with influences from progressive metal, death metal, power metal. The band is known for their great and maximised usage of orchestra and choirs which are all vital parts of every Epica songs. You'll surely love more of this band! :)
@RusselF0134 жыл бұрын
To give you a short background about Epica, I'll try my best. Epica started in 2002 by guitarist, Mark Jansen (after he was voted out of After Forever - his previous band with Floor Jansen). They started with a somewhat combination of gothic metal and symphonic metal on their debut album, The Phantom Agony. It's more like a continuation of After Forever's gothic/symphonic metal style. Track to check: Sensorium, Illusive Consensus Consign to Oblivion, their 2nd album - the band started to lean more on the symphonic metal sound with power metal influences on the songs. Track to check: Blank Infinity (Live in Retrospect), Quietus, Consign to Oblivion The Divine Conspiracy, their 3rd album - a more progressive mixed with symphonic metal style for the band in this album. More diversed tracks here such as Fools of Damnation, Menace of Vanity, Death of a Dream. Tracks to check: The Divine Conspiracy (Live in Retrospect), Fools of Damnation Design Your Universe, their 4th album - they started to experiment more on progressive side - it's like Progressive metal mixed with symphonic metal. This album brought Epica to fame worldwide. Tracks to check [aside from Unleashed]: Design Your Universe (Live in Retrospect), Our Destiny, or Burn to a Cinder Requiem for the Indifferent, their 5th album - the band still continues to experiment on their sound, but setting a darker tone of their music on this album. More experimentations, more progressive, and lesser symphonic and bombastic than they used to which makes it less accessible to a lot of symphonic metal fans. Still a decent album. Tracks to check: Storm the Sorrow (Live in Retrospect), Monopoly On Truth, Avalanche The Quantum Enigma, their 6th is like a return to their symphonic metal opus. This one has influences from Design and Consign with a more earthly sound and they use a few traditional instruments here to add substance to their music. But for some fans, this is quite hard to digest easily than the previous albums. Tracks to check: The Essence of Silence (Live), Victims of Contingency, Reverence The Holographic Principle / The Solace System, the 7th album is more like a Requiem meets Quantum Enigma. The band leans to more progressive style but keeping the structure a little less predictable by adding in more elements to the music. Tracks to check: Fight Your Demons, Beyond the Matrix, Ascension, Architect of Light They also did cover Attack on Titans songs which you might want to check out. I would suggest Dedicate your heart and Wings of Freedom. Their latest album, Omega will be released next year. The new single Abyss of Time was just released, but to be honest, I'm a little half-hearted on this song - but in terms of musicality, it's more melodic and gives me the vibes of their first 2 albums. Lyrically, their songs are mostly about socio-political issues, philosophies, religion/spirituality, personal and inner struggles/issues.

Hey man... welcome to the Epica Legions You asked about some info... well... let’s go: Epica was founded in 2002 by Mark Jansen (Guitars and growls and main writer) after he left his former band After Forever (the singer of after forever was Floor Jansen, no family connections). The band was initially named Sahara Dust, which had a different singer (the singer of Trail of Tears) and didn’t release official albums, soon after the singer was replaced with Mark’s girlfriend, Simone Simons, she was only 18 at the time... and a real good friend and for a while a roommate of Floor Jansen. The band also changed the name to Epica, as inspired by Kamelot’s album which is called Epica. BTW: Simone is now married to Oliver Palotai who is the keyboard player of Kamelot. Another note: in the retrospect show, Simone was pregnant, you can see that in the videos, and still managed to headband and sing a long set. Some song suggestions: 1. Consign to Oblivion - live at zenith 2. Cry for the moon - retrospect 3. Design your universe - retrospect 4. Martyr of the free world 5. The obsessive devotion 6. Seif al din 7. The Devine conspiracy 8. Beyond the matrix 9. The holographic principle 10. The essence of silence 11. Abyss of time (their latest single from the upcoming album Omega) 12. Facade of reality On a personal note: This band is great, I have seen them only twice in concerts and met them once. Their connection and chemistry together is beautiful and shows in the concert, they look like having a great time and loving what they do. They are fun to talk to and very easy going, in an instant fall in love with their personality. Just guess the reaction when I gave them a breast silicone implant to sign😉 Enjoy your journey with Epica

Mark, one the guitarists, I believe has said their music is actually written with an orchestra in mind but touring just doesn’t allow that for many reasons With each album, they have been using more classical musicians utilizing strings, and other instruments found in orchestras plus choirs Do their new music video for the song Abyss of Time, Design Your Universe from this show, Stabat Mater Dolorosa with Floor from this show, Consign to Oblivion at Zenith, and Beyond the Matrix also with an orchestra but not this one. There’s a ton more to react to but those are a great start For non Epica and Nightwish, check out Unleash the Archers’ Legacy, Faster than Light, & Northwest Passage and Seven Kingdoms’ Valonqar, In the Walls, & Monster

Brief history: Mark got booted from After Forever, formed Epica, they were courting a different woman to sing but that didn't work out, so Mark got his then girlfriend Simone to sing. Mark wrote a series called The Embrace That Smothers, about the dangers of organized religion, the first four parts are with After Forever, the rest are on various Epica albums. Simone and Mark do most the writing these days, while the rest of the band contributes to the composition. Retrospect was the 10th anniversary of their first album (The Phantom Agony), the show took a year to put together.
