I love the behind the scenes trivia, they used alot of real spiders with animatronic ones, they actually were very careful with the live spiders and made sure not to hurt them. the dead spiders were already dead and died of natural causes. "The safety of the spiders was paramount throughout the entire production, so for one scene where McLintock (John Goodman) had to spray an arachnid with insecticide, then squash it with his boot, the production went to extreme measures: first, a dummy spider was sprayed. then Goodman donned special boots with a hollowed out sole for the squash shot, so that the spider would just curl up inside and wait for the next take." they took alot of measures for the spiders safety

5:54 The spider wasn't meant to land on the actresses' face, but was a "happy accident". Apparently, she was enjoying the hot shower, and when she felt the spider land on her forehead, her immediate thought was "This is PERFECT!", regarding the shot for the scene. Much of the cast and crew actually grew fond of the live spiders (who were harmless to humans), taking care not to hurt them during and after shooting scenes, and some even asopting them.

This movie is straight up the reason I have arachnophobia. Ever since, I always get chills just seeing spiders and I can't have them anywhere near me. It sucks because I actually find spiders insanely interesting so I like looking at them, so I'll sit there with the shakes while I read up on crazy species like the assassin spiders or diving spiders being all paranoid that ones under my desk or something. xD

@@MooCowManHG Same, but for some reason I have so much anxiety whenever I see spiderwebs and cobwebs. I just really can't stand them. I remember I was doing some hiking in the summer, lots of bushes with extremely narrow dirt paths, spiderwebs just too close to my shoulder and shit like fuck that. Its mainly spiderwebs I mostly have a phobia on especially the circular ones. Discs and shiny but the feeling of it when you touch them, its not disgusting but its definitely a nope. 😥

A few years ago, while I was randomly visiting this bookstore that I'd never been to before (and actually have never gone to again) I found this great trilogy of books with a similar plot to this movie. An ancient race of spiders comes back and threatens mankind. Except that it goes MUCH further than this movie ever did. I don't remember all of the details, but the spiders had a connection to the Nazca Lines with one of them being some kind of warning about these creatures or something like that.

Late to the party, but: 1 raven killed by venomous spider, 2 mice killed and webbed up by spiders, 1 cat killed and webbed up by spiders, 1 dead spider in cereal box, 1 spider squished under boot, 6 spiders killed with crazy insecticide, 2 big spiders killed by being fried up. I'm fairly certain they are all prop deaths, but there's always a chance of an accidental death when it comes to the creepy crawly actors. Also, I loved this film, well, still do. Funny and scary all at once. Granted I'm not as scared of spiders as others, but they can still spook me. Fantastic special effects too! Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they used Huntsman spiders for the little guys. Their bites hurt a bunch from their big fangs, but they can't kill you.

you're right, if people watch the whole movie they'll see. Of course a carnage count and it being a spider movie makes it seem like typical Sci-Fi crap kids are used to nowadays, but when it actually came out in 1990 it was marketed as a "thrill-omedy" because it had a mixture of comedy and thriller/horror. And of course Jeff Daniels.

I've always mocked this movie by how overly smart and vicious they made the "Boss Spider" and its young. How they seem almost instinctively to go right to where they need to be in order to attack and kill a human. Spiders do not respond to people that way and the particular one that it's based off of, the Goliath Birdeater, does not hunt prey that's much larger than itself, feeding mainly on small insects and rodents and the occasional hummingbird. Did I also mention the Goliath is deaf and despite having eight eyes, they are nearly blind, they rely entirely on vibrations sensed with the hair on their legs. They rarely if ever attack humans and even then only if they feel threatened and when they do, they hiss then kick little hairs up to irritate and attempt to blind predators. Also, the venom of the Goliath Birdeater is actually not lethal to humans, though it is painful.
