During the cold war, the music of major composers in USSR was despised in Western countries fir two reasons. Conservative politicians considered it as “Bolshevist” (and indeed, Khachaturian was personally convinced Communist - so what?). Progressist musicians considered it as unacceptably ultraconservative. In addition, almost everybody rightly condemned the dictatorship of the “Union of Composers”, which - let us say things in a cool way - introduced a bias in the work of these composers. Time has elapsed and we can have a more distant and objective opinion about these composers. Nobody can deny that Khachaturian was an excellent composer, and in particular that this concerto is an actual masterpiece (the only Soviet cello concerto which seems to be appreciated is Shostakovich’s first one). Here, we have an excellent rendering of this masterpiece. Both the conductor and the soloist have captured the mood of that concerto, a successful mix of deep nostalgy and fierce heroism.

What a fantastic cello concerto...! Just hear the excitement of the audience at the end of the first movement..! They so want to applaud but are too well mannered. I don’t know why I haven’t heard this before. Even better than Shostakovich 1 in my opinion, and that’s saying something. Prokofiev Sinfonie Concertante is the only thing for this instrument I’ve heard that has the same thrill and dynamism

A wonderful cellist! He plays that big instrument like a violinist! Also, watch the cellists behind him during the first few measures as they play their cellos in stacatto to offset the lead cellist's bow strokes. I always find Khatchaturian's music to be very lively and distinct in its form.

With spare to uninteresting material, Khatchaturian managed to compose a very fine 'Cello Concerto, if not the masterpiece that is his Piano Concerto, or one as attractive as is his Violin Concerto. It doesn't seem to have the likable personality of either, but somehow has a special attraction of its own. The performance here is a great one, bringing out all its strengths and providing a great showcase for 'cellist Shapovalov.

12:56 sounds almost proto- minimalist. Like Steve Reich. However, I think it may be because of a mistake on the part of the orchestra. Still, it sounds cool.
@luckystarpiano3 жыл бұрын
Khachaturian actually has a lot of that! In his piano sonata ( 1961) there are so many moments when it’s very minimalist with this Philip Glassian idea of repeating a pattern with one small gradual alteration .. except this is way before any of the minimalists !!

+keri caye it's extremely repetitive. Too much happens over and over again, and it's not interesting enough to stand so much repetition. The big cello part on the third page is just a big sequence that goes on too long. Make no mistake, this is a fine performance but it is definitely a weakly written piece with not much musical interest. I like it anyway.
