Ararat, Australia's Golden Town Dies! Pt.2

What does a Town do when both its major public and private sector employers close shop around the same time?
The town dies, people leave in the search for work, the community is destroyed and its people demoralized.
This is what happened to Ararat in the early 1990's.
All up, roughly one thousand public sector jobs were lost from the closure of the Psychiatric Hospital, the Railways and Telecom.
A downturn in manufacturing was also the deathknell for the town's biggest private sector employer, Packard/CTA.

The Firefly night bus that goes from Adelaide to Melbourne does have a required meal break stop at the Ararat Roardouse located about 4km east of the town, It arrives there at about 11PM (bus to Adelaide) or 3:30AM (bus to Melbourne). Ive been on this Firefly bus six times (4 to Melbourne, 2 to Adleaide).

I was in Ararat 3 months ago and could not get a car park with my caravan, al the shops were full of people, stop complaining, try living in Melbourne where every road is chocked with roadworks and someone carrying a knife or gun

This project was done for the ABC in 2004 Michael. A lot of changes since then. Ararat has become a big area for people to retire from Melbourne. As you said, it is safe and easy to get around. Also has great health services
