+IMMACYCLOPS TVtropes is probably right. There are no English translations of the later books (at least I found none, maybe anyone else?), but from what I could gather from Japanese reviews on amazon for the last book (google translated), it seemed implied(?) in the second last book (which I guess ended with the avalanche) that Mei died. This makes sense since he offered himself as sacrifice to Gabu just then. However, in the last book, Mei kinda just comes back to life without much talk about it. Now I don't speak any Japanese, but from amazon that's all I figured out.

I'm not sure if it was truth or not, but I once read a comment that goats memory barriers develop after a certain age, and that Mei might have told his grandmother before he had forgotten the incident.

i assume she could've just seen it. For all we know, the goats could've all been together at the time but Mei and his mom were singled out potentially for being a bit distant from the others... so the grandma could've been nearby when it happened upon hearing the sounds of distress.

1:37 major plot hole.I wished that wouldn't happen for two reasons, Mei was there and should have remembered the wolves coming at him and his mom being left behind and 2 his grandma wasn't even there the only way she'd know would be by Mei confessing that to her.And even then Mei would have to have a trauma and loss of memory for it to work.Which is not there.
