"The best I have ever seen, you have ever seen and anyone has ever seen". That was the great Willie Carson`s statement on Frankel in June 2012 but it could easily have applied to sprinting and Dayjur. His run in New York in 1990 from the right hand stall on a left handed track would have cooked almost any other sprinter. On that day, Dayjur and Safely Kept (the US Champion) cooked the whole field. It was amazing !

My great-aunt Georgia Hofmann bred Dayjur. She was self-taught and spent hours studying bloodlines and genetics to get the top quality racehorses that she did. Dayjur is out of her champion sprinter, Gold Beauty, who is out of Stick to Beauty, my great-aunt's foundation broodmare who she bred to Mr. Prospector in the late 1970s to produce Gold Beauty. Triple Tiara and National Racing Hall of Famer, Sky Beauty, is out of the same line, with her second dam being Gold Beauty and her third dam Stick to Beauty. ESPN on Sky Beauty when she died in 2004: "Sky Beauty hailed from one of the richest female families of modern times. Her dam was the Grade 1 winner Maplejinsky, and her second and third dam were champion sprinter Gold Beauty (dam of Dayjur) and the great broodmare Stick to Beauty." She also bred Louis Quatorze who won the Preakness in 1996 against Derby winner Skip Away. I am extremely proud of my aunt and her horse breeding legacy that brought joy and excitement to thousands of racing fans everywhere!

Dayjur wasn't overrated in any way, he was exceptional and he had the best American sprinters beat at the Breeders Cup before the freak incident where he jumped the shadow on the track. I'm sure it's true that over the years Australia have bred more top class sprinters than we have in Europe but that doesn't mean that Dayjur wasn't outstanding. I went to all 3 days of the Ebor festival for more than 20 years and I'd go as far as to say despite all the fantastic horses that I saw there, Dayjur was the best regardless of distance. I'd stopped going by the time Frankel ran there and it's funny to think that Dayjur got beat by a vastly inferior horse (Todd) at Haydock and the same thing very nearly happened to Frankel (with Zoffany) at Royal Ascot. Just goes to show that any horse, even the greatest are vulnerable on any given day. Great horse, great memories.

@sonofscrewcap UR right. Though I believe my opinion will be established fact by the end of this year. The reason she was rated the top sprinter in the world last year without leaving "her own back-yard" is because Oz sprinters are the best in the world. I actually think the opposite of ur statement is true. Sprinters nowadays would need to win in Oz to be considered truly great. Hay List is as good as S Blast / SSB / T'over Target / Miss Andretti / Choisir. BC beat him by 5L on the bridle.

I know it's a big call but I think she will be Abernant level (let alone Dayjur) if she stays sound and they manage her career effectively.

@sonofscrewcap For the last decade the best sprinters have been coming from ANZ. In the video it says "it may be a long time until we see his kind again." I have a feeling that is going to be '11. There's an unbeaten filly from Aust called Black Caviar that is now rated the top-rated sprinter in the world. What's most impressive about this is that a. she's never left Aust & b. she's won only 1 G1. Such is the aura growing around her. Have a look at the 2010 Patinack Farm Classic.
@Arazi12413 жыл бұрын
I saw Black Caviar's most recent victory and was really impressed. It's a shame that she won't be brought over for Royal Ascot because I can't think of a sprinter over here that could beat her. I have to say I really do hate statements like 'Dayjur wouldn't have seen which way she went'. Dayjur was dominant in his time, BC looks like she could be dominant now, comparing them is totally pointless. There's no way knowing who would have won because obviously they'll never race each other.
@Nautilus19725 жыл бұрын
Of courese there's a way fo knowing. BC has an inferior Timeform rating to Dayjur.
@bgardiner200013 жыл бұрын
@schardy80 And the thought of SYT. I get butterflies just thinking about it. It's going to be 1 of the biggest things for ANZ racing since Phar Lap won in Mexico. And it means we will have a new reference point for Timeform ratings. IMO Australian middle distance horses are greatly under-rated. E.g. Sunline only achieved a 129 rating as did Northerly. I think that these were massively under-valued. So at least we will have a better yard-stick. If he trains on that is. From reports, he has.
@bgardiner200013 жыл бұрын
@schardy80 I know what you mean. What will she do with any amount of pressure on a good track. Moody is nowhere near the bottom of her yet. Maybe it's unreachable. I've not seen her pressured in any of her races. Even in the Lightning she was only ridden out for 150m at best. What will she do with the screws on for the last 3F? After the track work she had in the L'ning I'm surprised a shot at the sprint triple crown wasn't talked about. Placid Ark & Scillachi. Pretty good company.

Its because of the lack of interest in breeding sprinters that this has happened.Take Milers and Middle distance horses Why dont Australia have anything remotely close to the best.Its because the rest of the world DO want to breed horses for these distances.We have allowed OZ the the much needed chance to shine in the world of Thoroughbred racing.We can quite easily push you back into obscurity.

@sonofscrewcap Otherwise he would have stayed home where the big money is. Ur richest race is worth 1.25m pounds. We have 6 races worth more than that. The Melb is worth more than 3.7m. If you had any decent prize-money it might be worth the effort. Sunline, Makybe Diva, Northerly, Lohnro, Saintly, Octagonal, Haradasun (won the '08 QA Stakes), would have all been among the top 2-3 flat racing horses in the UK. Agreed Euro stayers are superior, but at middle distances there is nothing in it.

@bgardiner Claiming BC is the best ever is naive to say the least. Dont let your emotion for a horse cloud your judgement.Though she may be your favourite,that doesn't mean she is the best ever.BC needs to race outside of her own country,at the very least.
