Custodes size: I have always imagined them as someone hit enlarge 100% on the photocopier. They are big Humans. All in proportion to a a standard Human. Astarte's are portrayed as been hulking, musclebound with trunk like arms and legs etc. In essence, an Astartes has the classic Dwarf physique compared to a human. Shrink an Astartes and a Custodes to normal human size. The Custodes looks like normal Human. The Astartes looks ill proportioned and lumpen.

39:19 The Book of Lorgar was in False Gods. Kyril Syndermann was trying to translate it and accidentally summoned demons by reading a passage which Eufrati Keeler stopped with her faith (which she got ironically from the Lectitio Divinitatus). It's a nice hint of how the Word Bearers have turned from devoted worshippers of the Emperor as a God to worshippers of Chaos.

I think Mike Lee pays homage to the novel Eaters of the dead. This novel starts with 2 chapters actually written by an Arabian traveler in the middle ages who comes across vikings and observes their rites. In the rest of the fictional novel he accompanies them as they're called to help a settlement who is under attack by a mysterious foe who comes down from the mountain and kidnaps their folk. This was also turned to a movie with Antonie Banderas called the 13th warrior.

At the time it was written it very much felt they were going "The Emperor is not a good dude", and then later on felt they had overplayed it and started rolling it back a bit. For the audiobook version of The Voice, Emma Gregory narrates it, and years later comes back and voices just the singular role of Jenetia Krole in Saturnine, while everyone else is by Jonathan Keeble. Found that kinda interesting, since otherwise Keeble voices the ENTIRE Siege of Terra. Made me want a lot more Krole or other Sisters!

If you go off the old lore the Pariah gene that gives humanity Blanks was put into us by the Deceiver (C'Tan) back when we were tiny monkeys for "Just As Planned" reasons (Pariahs before they were ret-coned out of existence). I think it's implied from that that it's passed down through heredity. 3rd edition Necron codex as my "source"(I say very loosely, it's been 10+ years since I've read it) and it's probably not even canon anymore because of the 5th edition space Egyptian update.

I was excited about "The Last Church" when I first heard about it. Everything I've seen about it since has suggested it's the story of an annoying Reddit atheist having a 'debate' with someone who's faithful but not well-schooled in theology. Which is a common problem when sci-fi writers want to write about Big Philosophical Ideas, but don't have much grounding in philosophy or the humanities, as they do their best to sound Smart without actually knowing anything that actual experts talk about on these topics.
@Gallowglacht
@Gallowglacht 7 ай бұрын
But literature, like all art, is also shaped by the audience. So it can be read as Wise Atheist Genius owns Dogmatic Moron. However, that isn't the only way to interpret it. You can read it as the impression you were given - Annoying Reddit Atheist Dooms Own Plans Because of Religious Blindspot. So, rather than the Emperor being omniscient perfect being - what if he is just an edgelord. A super powerful one, but just a 2 dimensional, overconfident edgelord. Well the stories all still work. The Imperial Truth leads the Luna Wolves blindly into conflict with the Interex - who might otherwise have saved the entire Imperium. Instead of humiliating Lorgar and turning the Word Bearers from fanatic loyalists into the instigators of the Heresy - maybe the Emperor should have sat down Lorgar and said, "look, buddy, there are Gods, but they are malevolent, and we need to protect humanity from them". Lorgar after all did overthrow a chaos cult on his homeworld and his Levictio Divinitatus formed the basis of the Imperial Faith that humanity now uses to defend against Chaos. So read and enjoy the story. See it as a paradox and a tragedy. If the Emperor really is perfect and all knowing - doesn't that make Lorgar's claim that he is a God in all but name true. And if he is not perfect, but merely hugely powerful - then that opens the door to him being wrong. Not about everything, but maybe in how he tackles religion. Maybe treat it as a metaphor. He tries to lead a mortal human to the truth using his greater wisdom. And the human turns around and walks into a burning building, just as he leads humanity in a great crusade, only for humans to turn around and burn it down. So the same characters, the same words, the same scenario tell different stories, depending on the readers viewpoint. If the Emperor is right, it is the tragic story of a hero trying to do right, and the person he is trying to save dooms themselves through ignorance. However, if the Emperor isn't the hero, it is the story of a delusional tyrant who dooms the weak and ignorant through his own arrogance.

I had this reaction particularly badly when I first read it. For context, it was 2008 or so, I was 14, one of the few "openly" Christian pupils in an all-boys grammar school, and the recent release of the Da Vinci Code had made mocking Christians with easy-access buzz-phrases all the rage (combine that with standard teenage "rebellious" impulse and the faux-intellectualism of a grammar school classroom...). So you can imagine how hard I bounced off Dawkins-in-Gold here.

Lots of things point to the Emperor waking up, but what if what's waking up in that shell of a body is actually Horus having clawed his way back from the beyond. He could live in secret as a dark emperor without anyone knowing. Then later the true emperor having elevated himself after taking in so much psychic energy, can manifest himself back to life with a new body, and we'll have the best of both terrible worlds that can go toe-to-toe.
@jackp492

I always thought it would have been fitting for the emperor to have been destroyed on the vengeful spirit and they needed a vessel for the the throne so they used Horus in secret and shame, and ironically the imperium has been worshipping the Horus on the throne for the last 10,000 years, because that’s way more tragic, Horus wanted to stop his dad doing this, but then he destroyed him and ended up being the thing he was trying to stop happening, But I guess that didn’t happen in the books

About The Last Church...I think of the Emperor in that story as just a younger, less mature version of himself. He's still in his "warlord" era and, as such, is perhaps a lot more arrogant and overconfident (at least externally) than he is later on. I think that the story foreshadows a couple of things. Just as the Emperor was the genesis of the man's religion, he becomes the genesis for the Imperial religion later on. Even more importantly, the story shows that the Emperor doesn't really "get" humans as he thinks that he can just walk up there and talk this dude out of his religion. At the end, even though he may be persuaded intellectually, he still goes back inside the church because it's as much a heart thing as a mind thing.

They might have been up to this sort of shenaniganry for thousands of years by this point, just now with a wee bit more of a sense of urgency... what with their souls being drained by the god of all the things they love doing and whatnot.

Hello guys, I've been a subscriber for a long time and I'm trying to connect the physical warhammer books but I'm stuck in false gods and I don't know where to buy or order books. Can you tell me where to buy or order books that are hard to find like flight of the eisenstein, descent of angels etc.. I'm from Italy

They don't keep every single book in physical print all the time. If you want physical books the best bet is either Black Library or failing that, eBay. Pretty much everything ever printed is available as ePub from Black Library though

@@ArbitorIan I guess ebook may be the logical way to go. Although seeing physical books lined well and orderly in the house still holds it's charm. 1 guy on ebay is selling descent of angels for more than a hundred euros.

No matter which way he played it, they went wrong. But that's cuz he built them to go wrong, because the Heresy was intentional. He just didn't think it was going to he led by Horus, and he didn't see Magnus breaking the Webway.

@nicholasleon7819 fan theory based on 1) the emporer could see the future but not the details 2) he was going to engineer a thunder warrior moment where he could clean house of unreliable elements 3) he had already brought Dorn back to protect Terra but seemed utterly unprepared for keeping the locks on the webway 4) Horus was the only Primarch he ever treated with genuine affection 5) the golden throne was built for Magnus to sit in, alluded to in that scene with Vulkan

@@willumbermarchant5510 very interesting. the emperor is a cold blooded sociopath willing to do whatever he could to secure his goals, but i never bought into the idea he would exterminate the legions wholesale. certainly legions like the night lords or the world eaters would have to go eventually, but i definitely think the emperor could foresee the need to maintain standing armies for defense and internal security purposes after the conclusion of the crusade, especially since astartes are living weapons, sort of let all the normal people retire and live their lives while the old weapons keep watch from the periphery. in fact i would much more readily believe that the emperor was prepared for or actively planning schism with the mechanicum, or other imperial organizations like the navigator houses who surely would have lost their political power had the webway project reached fruition. and i don’t think that the throne being designed for magnus indicates the emperor wanted him to fall to chaos. i don’t think that makes sense it seems like more difficulty to force magnus to operate the throne than to just have him do it, and it was a temporary arrangement anyway according to his plans. the emperor sat the throne to hold the webway closed in the dungeon out of necessity due to the amplifying nature of the throne, the throne wasn’t meant to hold the webway closed nor be a permanent thing, the permanence of the ensconcement on the throne was due at first to the immense and sudden requirement of keeping the webway closed, and then after by the emperors wounds. the emperor travelled the galaxy freely and powered the throne remotely sufficiently to allow for travel before he returned to terra after ullanor

@nicholasleon7819 Sorry you misunderstood me, Magnus wasn't meant to break the webway or fall to chaos, but he was meant to sit in the throne and operate it. The legions weren't to be destroyed entirely, but the crap ones necessary for conquering the galaxy through fear and brutality (world eaters, night Lords, death guard, probably even the space wolves and white scars) would be taken out and only loyal autistic types would be left. By using half of the legions to take out the other half, you can guarantee their loyalty AND they'd agree to restructuring willingly. It's fan theory, but I just can't believe the emporer did all this stupid shit with the legions and didn't expect a revolt.
