I believe they fill all the dirt around it to help hold it and they put giant stakes in the ground

There is a root structure, they dont cut off the whole root system they pick it up with soil. When its planted a calculated hole is digged which the tree plants right into, and they fill the soil with dirt to hold it in place. Sometimes however you will need external support to tie up a tree, like a scaffolding to hold it for a while until it gets secure enough on its own. Its all case dependant and there are no rules.

@@user2144 it seems a shame to take the palm trees from residential areas. Where i live it is the opposite. People take palm trees from rural areas where they are tall to take care of for fruit and plant them in urban areas in rows. They have many advantages over other trees in the cities, they grow strait, they root down as opposed to the side, if you cut the bunches on time they don't make a big mess, the older ones don't produce shoots, and lets face it, where do you need the clean air trees produce? Where there are people.

I would be surprised if the palm survived this. The rootball should be several times larger for the size of the plant. I think that this is done only because cutting down the palm sounds worse than transplanting it, but the end result is the same.

Obviously the palms survive this ordeal. Do you really think they'd do this if they weren't almost 100% positive the palm would be fine? Think about it! Seriously though, this palm, has a small and compact root ball naturally. Most palms actually have very compact root balls. This is why in LA, for example, you see those extremely tall and skinny palms (Washingtonia robusta) and not in say, Florida. Florida has so many windy thunderstorms, not too mention hurricanes, and that palm just topples over. Because the root system is so small and compact. That palm can be 100-feet-tall, with a root ball barely 5% its size. And the root system for this palm in the video (Phoenix c.) is similar. In fact, compare LA to Florida. For the same species of palm, the ones in LA get much, much taller. Less wind, much fewer storms, no hurricanes, et cetera. Sorry for the palm lecture. I'm sure you don't care. I just like palm talk. Ha!

Yes, I think that in many cases transplanting would be done even if there is zero chance of survival. For political reasons. However, you seem to know what you are talking about so now I somewhat believe that these palms may survive. Too bad that there is no follow-up video from a few years later.

MrAlwaysright1980 if you're careful not to destroy too many roots, plant in soil with good drainage and water appropriately then it'll be fine, especially since they keep so much of the original soil on the roots so it's more comfortable than it would be if the did it by hand.

They do. Palm trees are great that way. High end places pay up to $30,000 per fully grown palm tree. Most people don't have the luxury of watching a canary palm mature. Scouts find palms people don't want anymore and dig them up for them. Then resell them.

Yo nunca muevo ningun árbol o palmera , simpleme lo siembro en un buen lugar para no lastimarlo o construyo la casa a donde se puedan apreciar los árboles o palmeras !!
