Yes it could, however if you are carrying many heavy books all day, it will not be very comfortable.

can't this pack be stuffed into itself from the small pocket inside the main compartment? how big is it when it's packed up like that?

You’re right, I neglected to show that. Packed inside the pocket it’s roughly 5in x 7in.
