@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
Wasn't much work, I finished it in an afternoon. We don't play two players here much, more often it's 1 player trying to beat the others previously set high score. In fact, I wired up the 2nd set of controls on the right to exactly mirror the player 1 controls, the only difference being that the left set is a 4-way joystick and the right set is an 8-way joystick, so player 1 can use either set of controls, depending on which game works best with the 4-way or 8-way stick. To do this, simply name both of the USB encoder devices the same.

The unit just comes down to personal choice. I prefer an Android box because its easy and I can download and install the emulators directly from the Google Play Store. The joystick/button/encoder board package listed in the video description simply plugs into the USB ports of the android box. Player 1 has a USB connection and player 2 uses the second USB port. Everything auto-detects as far as inputs, but if you wanted to custom map any buttons you can do that through the emulator front end. if you search amazon for "led joystick buttons usb encoder" you'll get a lot of matches that are almost identical to the button set that I have listed, but I bet if you wait a few days amazon will re-stock the one I linked. Sometimes they sell out and get restocked a few days later. For the coin door wiring, I have a basic tutorial in the video description, but it's really easy. The coin door has two wires... white and green. Once you install your buttons, you'll have one for the "SELECT" button, which is what MAME uses for a coin drop signal. You just need to splice your white and green wire into the wires of your select button. In my case, my button had red, black and blue wires, and I just had to splice the white wire into the red wire and the green wire into the black wire.

Exactly. I've had full size cabinets in my house, and they are a pain in the ass, especially since I had a flight of 22 stairs going up to my front porch at the time. I prefer the size of these. And... if you want to add a couple of more inches to height, you can either add a set of furniture wheels or legs, or simply cut 2 pieces of 2x4 and paint them black and place them underneath the riser. Seems to make it the perfect full size height that way.

Can you provide me some guidance on how you did the amp cutouts for the front? Following your method here and have no real idea on the best way to make the holes for the volume knobs.
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
I just used a stepper hole bit and drilled them until they were the right size (just drill a little, then check for fitting, repeat) and centered it in the panel. You might want to put it a little lower than center because it mounts at a slight angle and I just barely have room to screw my control deck down. Another 1/4" and I wouldn't be able to. No need for a hole on the power button, I just keep mine permanently pressed in, which is in the "On" position.

@@turret72 I've never seen that rom for arcade (mame), but if you can find the rom you'll just have to find out which rom set it's for and download the appropriate mame emulator that runs that version of rom set. All of the arcade game roms that I use on Mame4Droid are rom set version 0.139, but with mame arcade games, there's like 8 or 9 different rom sets, and no "universal" emulator that will run them all, it's just trial and error until you find one that works.

I've sorted that issue and will be making a new control panel altogether but my question is...what are the odds the stock trackball and control wheel will play nice with the usb-controllers that are coming with my new buttons and joysticks? I'd like to retain all the controls so that we can stay as true to the original control schemes for each game as possible.
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
Yep, the stock trackball and controls work great with the USB encoder boards, as long as the connectors are the same.

For the power wire, it comes with a 5v power supply. You'll need to use a 3.5mm headset cable to dual male RCA plugs to connect the amp to the android box, and then a little speaker wire to run from the amp to the speakers. (PS... Bo Jackson was the shit! Favorite athlete of all time!)

Nice work man. I would like to see a video of someone actually building a mame cab slightly bigger than these 1up cabs and make them out of solid wood. I just can’t see spending over $200 on particle board, it doesn’t last sadly...
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
I agree, but the price is still justified for the Arcade 1Up, just for the internal parts and basic shape alone. As I'm upgrading, I'm replacing my panels that I mod with solid 1/2" hard wood, so eventually it will be a hardwood cabinet, and yes, I could make one from scratch, but for $199 it's worth it just for the monitor, control deck, bezel, and basic structure to work with as a basic template. I replaced my control deck and front panel where my volume controls are last night with hard wood and they came out great. I'll be adding a new video in a week or two with the new mods that I've done and the hardwood replacements. Every time I make a mod to a panel, it gives me an excuse to replace it with real wood. I've also added some "feet" to the bottom and increased the height 4".
@Ur2ez4me816 жыл бұрын
Dave Helmig if I were handy enough I would make it taller and make the control panel wider. These look way too narrow for two adult players. I’ll probably get one as well & try too do what you’re doing... Awesome work though man.
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
@@Ur2ez4me81 For two player you are probably right. In my house, we only play one player and jut try to beat each others high scores. The narrowness is actually why I like them. I can raise the height to full size cabinet height, but being a few inches narrower it fits better in my living room. When I made my custom control deck, I left the width the way it was (19"), but did extend it out past the front by an extra inch to accommodate some customization (11.5" instead of 10.5").
@Ur2ez4me816 жыл бұрын
Dave Helmig Yeah see in my house there would be two people playing all the time & in I think it just needs no more than a inch and a half on the control panel.
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
@@Ur2ez4me81 Sounds about right. That was part of the reason I made a new control panel, I converted the whole space to one big 1-player control deck. No 2-player controls at all. And I have the Mag Stik Plus on order, which is a joystick that you can change from 4-way to 8-way from above just by lifting up on the stick and rotating the stick 45 degrees, without having to take the control deck off. Originally I was going to have to install 2 sticks, a 4-way and an 8-way, both connected to player one, but the Mag Stik Plus just saved me a whole joystick's worth of room on my panel. Might have to throw a trackball in that extra spot.

Thanks Carlos! If it wasn't for the bulkiness and hassle of the shipping, I might think about it. @davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
Actually you can, the Centipede roms come in two variations... joystick or trackball. Mine has the joystick version installed. Same with Millipede and Missile Command. And, on top of those, you can play Centipede in either the NES or SNES emulators as well, without trackball/mouse support needed.
@bland98766 жыл бұрын
@@davehelmig3458 are you saying there's an official arcade machine of centipede that has a joystick?
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
@@bland9876 Not sure about an official cabinet, but there is an official setting in the rom for "analog controls" which is enabled by default on this rom version. I remember the source I got it from having both versions... (trackball) and (joystick) of the rom. It supposedly mimics setting the arcade to "analog controls". The joystick works nice and smooth. I have both 4-way and 8-way joysticks, and it works best with 8 way. Same for Millipede and Missile Command. I thought it was from planetemu.net, but not seeing there now when looking. @davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
The power button is permanently pressed in, which is the "ON" position, so no need for a cutout on that one. No need to ever press the button to turn it off, it turns off when the power strip is shut off.

GBox is really easy. The USB cable from the joystick encoder board plugs right in, and the GBox recognizes them right out of the box, no custom mapping is necessary. For any custom mapping that you want though, you can do it right through the front end, which is powered by Mame4Droid.

How do I get games on my 1 up arcade ..like news games ..or snes. Also can it work with a pacman 1 up console ?
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
You need to run emulators on a Raspberry Pi, Android box, PC, etc, and download the proper roms for those emulators. It can work on any cabinet, but not with the default hardware. See ETA Prime's tutorial for setting up your emulator hardware to work with the default monitor and controls. Basically, you are gutting the built in computer boards from the arcade 1up and replacing with your own, depending on the exact setup you are looking to build. This one is Android based, most others on here are Raspberry Pi based, and even some commenters in here are using full PC's.

Well done. I think you have two speaker mono ?
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
Nope, the left and right channels are separate channels coming from the amp outputs, they are not connected. The mono right channel isn't bridged into the left. Certain games that use some voices on the left channel only can be heard (for example, "FINISH HIM" in Mortal Kombat" is a left channel audio only). It would have been easier to just splice into the right speaker wires and have a 2 speaker mono setup, but I already had the channels split coming from the amp outputs, so did it the correct way.
@truhunk16 жыл бұрын
@@davehelmig3458 . Really, I didn't know that. Cool.
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
@@truhunk1 Tying the left and right together in a 2 speaker mono setup though would give you a more immersive and louder, richer experience. I thought about doing this, since you don't often hear much from the left channel. Maybe I'll tap into the right side and add a switch to go back and forth between the two modes at some point if I find that I don't play many games with a left channel.

I am planning on using the same amp in the same spot. How did you drill the holes and did you use anything to cover the holes?
@davehelmig34586 жыл бұрын
@@Elements604 I just used a round stepper drill bit for the holes, same as drilling a hole for a button. On the larger master control knob, I did use one of the old arcade joystick hole covers from the stock sticks (drilled out much bigger) to give it a little of a surrounding shroud if that's what you mean, but it's really not noticeable at all and not needed. I just happened to have the parts leftover from the old joystick dust caps, so thought I'd try using it.
