I remember reading somewhere that Konami likely planned for *Xexex* to be a big deal given the amazing graphics, 3D effects, and whatnot (seeing as shooters were still super popular at the time like Gradius, R-Type, etc) but had the poor luck of releasing around the same time as *Street Fighter II* hit arcades.

Konami always had bigger ambitions for their arcade division but their efforts mostly ended up falling flat. The biggest example of this was their Cobra arcade system which was intended to go head to head with Sega's Model 3

Street Fighter II existing did not stop anyone from playing anything, the game just wasn't popular. People didn't go to the arcade and only play one game.

If it hadn't been for Street Fighter II, this would have run away with the title of best arcade game of 1991. A masterpiece that has aged incredibly well with time.

Xexex has high detailed and very colorful graphics for such an early arcade game ('91). Konami was always a great quality game developer who made some of my favourite console games ever like Super Castlevania 4 and Contra 3 - The Alien Wars. They also made good shooters for the SNES like Gradius 4 or Axelay, real timeless classics. The time between ca. '90 and about '95, so the big 16bit "console wars" (but I liked all systems), was clearly the best and most interesting time in videogaming, that never happens again. I'm glad that I have whitnessed those really great aera...

Yeah, but the japanese version have lives instead of everytime your health is empty you must insert a credit to continue.

The Japanese version also actually has subweapons. In addition, this shield mechanic is actually extremely unforgiving (compare to Raiden V for instance). This is another classic example of Konami bastardizing the World version to an unfair degree, like with Haunted Castle, or my personal "favorite", Thunder Cross. Protip: NEVER PLAY WORLD!THUNDER CROSS IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY. Screw that one, seriously. Bad enough Hamster demanded it for a bit of achievement-hunting in the ACA compilation they brought to Steam.
@darkerfalcon37472 жыл бұрын

Also let’s not address the world version there’s an instance anywhere in the game you outright instantly die like what happened to me with the dragon boss killing me on a whim
@darkerfalcon374710 ай бұрын
The World version is awful compared to the Japanese version. The energy bar is useless you take a lot of damage from enemies and there aren't invicibility frames. They cranked up the difficulty for no reason. You have no lives, everytime you die you have to insert a credit to continue and the game (for no reason) keeps loop endlessly as opposed to the japanese version where if you beat the game twice, the game is over.
