It's hard to believe we're all in our 50s now, and there are no more arcade game rooms. Arcades were our favorite hangout places. If I had all those quarters back, I'd be a rich man now. Lmao!

Would you be richer though? If you had all those quarters back, sure you'd have more money, but would have missed out on those great moments, memories, and experiences. Sometimes being rich has more to do with our mind and soul rather than from purely a financial standpoint. Ok that's my deep thought for the day lol
@crimsontide1980 Жыл бұрын
I'm probably a little younger than you but probably not by much(I'm 43). I spent a ton of quarters on Bad Dudes and Final Fight, those were my 2 main games as a kid in arcades. While they're nowhere near the same tier as timeless classics like DK, Pacman, Galaga, etc., those were the games that I have the most memories attached to as a kid. And to this day I do still play Final Fight here and there, albeit in my home and on a console. It's not quite the same but it's the best I can do.

For those who didn't understand, he is talking about Billy Mitchell. He used to be considered one of the best videogame players in the world, achieving records in Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, but they just found out he cheated on his Donkey Kong high scores that gave him fame as a desperate attempt to regain his top spot after he was surpassed, and while he may have made a legit perfect score in Pac-Man, he was considered the first player to achieve a perfect record, but sources are claiming he was not the first.

As of early 1981, Nintendo's efforts to expand to North America were unsuccessful, culminating with the attempted export of the otherwise successful Radar Scope. They were left with a large number of unsold Radar Scope machines, so company president Hiroshi Yamauchi thought of simply converting them into something new. He approached a young industrial designer named Shigeru Miyamoto, who had been working for Nintendo since 1977, to see if he could design such a replacement. Miyamoto said that he could. Yamauchi appointed Nintendo's head engineer, Gunpei Yokoi, to supervise the project. Nintendo's budget for the development of the game was $100,000. Some sources also claim that Ikegami Tsushinki was involved in some of the development. They played no role in the game's creation or concept, but were hired to provide "mechanical programming assistance to fix the software created by Nintendo". At the time, Nintendo was also pursuing a license to make a game based on the Popeye comic strip and animated shorts. When this license attempt failed, Nintendo took the opportunity to create new characters that could then be marketed and used in later games. Miyamoto came up with many characters and plot concepts, but he eventually settled on a love triangle between a gorilla, a carpenter, and a girlfriend that mirrors the rivalry between Bluto and Popeye for Olive Oyl. Bluto became an ape, which Miyamoto said was "nothing too evil or repulsive". He would be the pet of the main character, "a funny, hang-loose kind of guy." Miyamoto has also named "Beauty and the Beast" and the 1933 film King Kong as influences. Although its origin as a comic strip license played a major part, Donkey Kong marked the first time that the storyline for a video game preceded the game's programming rather than simply being appended as an afterthought. Unrelated Popeye games were eventually released by Nintendo for the Game & Watch the following month and for the arcades in 1982.

@stormguard3256 күн бұрын
Fun fact: There is a game made for the Game & Watch handheld line which is supposedly a prequel to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, and is titled Donkey Kong Circus. In it, Mario is a ringmaster who runs a circus and abuses Donkey Kong by forcing him to tricks which involve the poor ape getting hurt. This has lead many (including myself) to believe that he kidnapped Pauline so he could get revenge on Mario for abusing him.

I wonder how many quarters I stole from the top of my dad's dresser to go to the corner deli and play this in the smokey game room in the back? I would take most, but not all of the quarters, as not to get caught. Sometimes there was a huge pile of change and I knew I could take about 6 quarters. This was my favorite game of all. Growing up in the early 80's with a cool deli on the corner with all of the latest games was quite the experience! What a fun place to spend those years! :) Sorry dad!
