After losing his family to Piltover's enforcers, he retreated into the shadows, using his engineering skills to survive. That all changed when he met Violet (Vi)-a fierce, street-smart orphan who reminded him of his younger self. Magnus took her in, becoming her adoptive grandfather and mentor, and over time, his home became a sanctuary for Vi’s friends as well. But unbeknownst to them all, Magnus carries a heavy secret: he’s suffering from a terminal illness caused by years of exposure to Zaun’s toxic fumes and the harmful chemicals he handled during his days as an enforcer. The illness is slowly eating away at his lungs, leaving him with bouts of coughing, fatigue, and pain that he hides from the others. He’s determined to protect his makeshift family until his last breath, refusing to let them see his weakness. The Makeshift Family Magnus and Vi weren’t alone for long. Vi brought in a small group of street kids who had become her closest friends, turning Magnus’s home into a haven for the lost and forgotten of Zaun. Magnus took on the role of a gruff but caring grandfather to each of them, all while keeping his deteriorating health a secret. 1. Powder (Jinx) Personality: Sensitive and eager to prove herself, Powder often struggles with feelings of inadequacy. Magnus, aware of her fragile mental state, goes out of his way to nurture her talents in tinkering and explosives, giving her the confidence she desperately needs. Hidden Connection: Magnus sees a bit of himself in Powder’s struggle with inner demons, pushing him to protect her at all costs. He hides his illness particularly well from her, not wanting to add to her burdens. 2. Mylo Personality: Sarcastic, brash, and always quick to speak his mind, Mylo often butts heads with Magnus, who responds with tough love. Despite their bickering, Mylo respects Magnus’s strength and wisdom. Hidden Connection: Mylo suspects something is wrong with Magnus, often catching him coughing in secret, but Magnus dismisses it as “old man’s lungs.” 3. Vander Personality: A strong, compassionate leader who runs the Last Drop bar, Vander is one of the few who knows Magnus’s secret. They share a deep bond built on mutual respect and shared sacrifices. Hidden Connection: Vander urges Magnus to tell Vi and the others the truth, but Magnus stubbornly refuses, not wanting them to worry or feel burdened by his condition. The Ironclad's Refuge Magnus’s home, known as "The Ironclad’s Refuge," became a hidden fortress where Vi and her friends could be safe from the dangers of the undercity. Magnus fortified it with traps and shroud generators, using the skills he learned as an enforcer. The hideout is equipped with hidden medical supplies and a small lab where Magnus secretly concocts medicines to ease his symptoms. Despite his illness, Magnus continues to be the backbone of their family, staying up late to repair their gear, train Vi in combat, and ensure the kids have enough to eat. He hides his pain with gruff jokes and deflections, never letting on just how much his condition has worsened. Personality Magnus is a stoic and stubborn man, driven by a fierce desire to protect his family. In a climactic battle, Magnus pushes himself to his limits to protect Vi and the others from a Piltover raid, using every trick in his arsenal to buy them time to escape. It’s during this fight that Vi sees Magnus coughing up blood, finally realizing the extent of his illness. Despite her protests, Magnus urges her to take the lead, passing the torch to her as he collapses. In the aftermath, Magnus becomes bedridden, forcing Vi to step up as the new protector of their makeshift family. His illness serves as a turning point for Vi, hardening her resolve to fight for the people of Zaun.
