Hello Mr. Tim Cain , Arcanum is also one of my childhood gems while i played back then i was 12-13 years old in that game's released date ( I 'm from Turkey and i think it came a little bit later than it's original shipped date in USA , don't remember exact date ) This is kinda might be awkward to mention but i don't remember how but in that time i knew that it's your game and knew that since Fallout 1-2 are the greatest games all time for me , i knew that this game is going to be spectacular and i should play it . Played it , enjoyed it a lot and gave me wonderful moments :) Even that when me and my brother get's some money from our grandparents i gave my big brother to that money to increase my level in that game ( i think there was some graveyard in that game and you can level up repeatedly in there ) . I wish that one day we will see Arcanum's Sequel game ( i know , i know , you are not fan of sequel sir but, can i imagine it in my own small world that , one day this might be happening :) ) Again sir thank you for giving me wonderfull childhood memories with your spectacular games . I wish you to have a great life and to your loved ones .

Hi, I'm also from Turkey, about where you might have heard that Arcanum made by the same developers who made Fallout; Level magazine gave full version of Arcanum on April 2009, I still have that DVD on my shelf. I also checked Level magazine of that month and it mentions that Arcanum made by the developers of the Fallout, so you might be remembering it from there 😉

Before discovering this channel, I actually hadn't realized you were part of Pillars and Tyranny as well. It's been great seeing oldschool CRPG's gaining popularity in the past 15 years.

I really hope this mans KZbin blows up and gets more attention. Tim if you’re reading this, your fallout game helped me sit down in the early 2000’s and learn English after my father moved us out of the country of Yemen and into the USA, our home country was on the cusp of invasions and proxy wars that today have completely dismantled the government. My childhood was filled with questions about war and tyranny and all sorts of negative thoughts, and I spent so much time deciphering words in your Fallout crpg and picking up the language, I’ll never forget the distraction your game offered me when I could only speak Arabic, and held a dictionary close by while playing and a google tab open to understand wtf was happening in it. I literally could not comprehend what the stats or character builder was asking me to put together, and spent hundreds on hundreds of hours, summer after summer just drilling away at Fallout 1 until finally it all started to click. Thanks so much for giving this war refugee a way to enjoy his time and a drive to learn a new language. Love you big dog.

When I was a kid I thought only me and my friends who found out about Arcanum through me played it, it felt like it was super obscure. FF 15 years, I meet people at work with similar work ethics and ofc they've played it too and had similar opinions of it. It really doesn't seem to be THAT obscure and underrated, but given the amount of hate even BG3 got for "delivering too much content" I guess modern YT propaganda will keep painting it a "bugged flawed monster of a game for a really tiny audience of hardcore CRPG fans"
@stuartmorley68947 ай бұрын
I'd just ignore the weird corners of the Internet that are slagging of BG3 and the like for those reasons. I'm not saying it's a game that's perfect, they don't exist. Maybe stay in the bits of the Internet that recognize a game that is award winning, sold loads, introduced millions to a genre and is rightly lauded as a good game. Tbf that's 95% of the discourse. The same for Arcanum. Again not going to pretend it's perfect but most of the coverage these days recognizes it's strengths.

As a kid, I only had pirated, unpatched, no bugfixes, ever, version of Arcanum, got it few days before 9/11 actually (and it was like Eatern Europe sh*thole but the game even had locaization that sucked terribly) , it didn't have things like NPCs giving you hints how to use World Map, I got stuck for a week unable to leave the crash site bc didn't notice the changed icon on the UI but, from the first cinematic, from character creation it was SOOO INTERESTING I kept playing it. Despite the bugs, despite the shitty localization. Then later I tried playing Neverwinter Nights and immediately got bored, no to tell that NN sucks, just my opinion, but there IS something about Arcanum that captures you right away and you on't even mind the bugs that supposedly were so bad they buried the game (it's not true at all)

To be decided actually. For my first playthrough I've kept everything relatively neutral. I'm playing a young half-elf who was raised in an elvish community, being taught magic is the way, and is now striking out to explore and see which he would like to pursue. Starting with a bow as my primary weapon. Basically just made my character and saved the game at crash site after talking to Virgil. Going to play more tonight now that I'm off work.

Hello Tim, I just wanted to express my gratitude and say THANK YOU for making such fantastic role playing games, and for creating your channel. It's amazing to hear you share your stories and experiences, and to learn more about the games that I (and so many others) had so much fun playing. Your behind-the-scenes and under-the-hood videos are fantastic, whether it's technical videos on, say, Arcanum tile generation, stories about early days working on Fallout 1, or your thoughts on remakes. Some Arcanum questions: 1. You have made a video about some of the inspiration behind Fallout. Might you do the same for the world of Arcanum? (For example: You've already mentioned in a video that the team was a fan of the X-files, which inspired you to create the unresolvable Half Ogre Island quest.) There is a surprising amount of detective work, "forbidden knowledge learned through books" and plot twists in Arcanum (which I absolutely love). Any particular books or films you drew upon when creating the main quest? I think the game has an almost Lovecraftian horror vibe sometimes, which I think works so well in this universe. It's just great world-building stuff and an gripping main quest. 2. Vendigroth Wastes, The Bane of Kree, The Bangellian Deeps, Gorgoth Pass. The names in Arcanum are fantastic and evocative. Who came up with them? (that might be a tall order to find out. But what was your general design and idea generation process like when creating the world? Are some names imported directly from your D&D games? 3. The Ancient Gods quest is simply fantastic design. It requires the player to do some thinking for themselves, which is great. Finding the All-Father altar in the Vendigroth ruins is so atmospheric and evocative. (actually, the entirety of the Vendigroth ruins are.) What was the design process behind creating the diagram and the text hints in the "ancient gods" book? (ie combining the visual hints with the text hints). For example, I just realised now that the number of circles surrounding the greater gods indicate the order in which to complete the sequence. Subtle but really effective. 4. The Lost Voices and finding the Iron Clan - who designed that quest? It's fantastic. 5. An Arcanum remake... is it happening? Thanks for creating these worlds for us to jump into, Tim.

This is my favorite Troika game. I didn't have the means to play computer games when it came out, I was out of the loop completely and I didn't know about Arcanum at all until relatively recent times. But this game is so good that it had to become a cult title and stay relevant for people to pick up by some kind of chance in the years to come. I'm one of those lucky video game players who got to know about Arcanum years later its publication, who ended up in love with it. And we're (slowly but?) surely becoming a legion! I don't know if it's because of its obscura magick, or if it's the push from its steamwork tech; if it's the ghost from the place where the game was initially getting written, who got attached to it making it "immortal"; if the key contribution came from a very good dog silently overseeing the whole development... But there is something special about Arcanum, and I'm sure there will be more games to play, in the not so distant future, that will refer to and get huge inspiration from the fantastic world you guys managed to put together for us to get lost into. THANKS!

I think it would be interesting to do another 'Fallout Cut Content' video, except it be done with you looking over fan-made lists on the Wikis or video compilations of info. The fans have picked over every scrap of info they have, but lack that first hand knowledge. You were there, but memory fades. Combining the two could get the cleanest information set we ever could get, you read over what the fans have gathered, it jogs some memories, you clarify and add on some detail you recall or context. (In particular, the Vipers and Rippers are probably the two most interesting)
@kalkuttadrop63717 ай бұрын
(Not to be rude, but in the last video on cut content you said several things that can be proven false. But you also said several new things we'd never known of. On a few occasions, you've mentioned that - despite not being a musician, yourself - you were able to direct the music for Fallout. So, I was wondering if you could spend some time talking about how music factors into your design process. What is important to you when considering music for your games, what are some things you try to avoid, and are these things included in your design documentation (and if so, how)? Apologies if you have actually spoken about this before and I've simply missed it. Thank you so much for sharing all of your incredible insight!

Being a pretty big book worm I just love the plot you designed around the games. Having grown up with older folks who lived through the 50s along with having computers and other things the whole retro futurism concept always stuck to me. With the success of the games and the different retcons and changes to plot that have happened with the newer fallouts it would be sooooo great to see someone come out with a spiritual successor. To be honest, it wouldn’t even have to be a game. I’d love to read a book series along a similar idea with the same brutality and veiled dark humor that the old games had. The tribulation experienced in the post nuclear wasteland reminds me so much of cormac McCarthy’s work “Blood Meridian”. PS- happy pride month brother. I down 4-hour podcasts semi-regularly, 30 minutes isn't "long," and I'm fairly certain I'm not alone in that. If you wanted to do more/longer, it wouldn't be an issue on this end (IIRC, you said something about editing).

I swear the more of these vids I watch the more I wonder what the development of so many of my favorite games through the years were like. Seems like even the easiest game would have more blood, sweat, and tears than a lot of other jobs. Wish more game creators would do vids like this! I'd love to hear one about the Bard's Tale Construction set (which means there probably is one already lol). I never got to play that one sadly, just the base trilogy, and BT3 is the only one I ever managed to beat. Those were NOT easy games LOL.
