Brother I never subscribe to people however I listened to your live install for Arch on November 7 and your way you handled not backbiting others was very impressive behavior. Thank you for your work, I enjoy it alot and refreshy memory often.

As usual, Great Job! I’ve never used NFS shares, so I have one question; Is there an easy way to access the NFS share from Windows without much configuration? I’ve used Samba before, and I could access the share using Explorer out-of-the-box, without having to do ANY client side configuration.

why when installing Arch one of the first steps is to activate and synchronize NTP?
@eflinux3 жыл бұрын
The wiki defines it best: Network Time Protocol is the most common method to synchronize the software clock of a GNU/Linux system with internet time servers. It is designed to mitigate the effects of variable network latency and can usually maintain time to within tens of milliseconds over the public Internet. The accuracy on local area networks is even better, up to one millisecond.

Hello Ermanno, thanks again for great explanation. When setting a server (and not only in this case), naturally, want use ISO-8601 at least for collate and time (YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM-SS), can you explain in a video how to?

Will do eventually in a future tutorial. Thanks for the idea :)

If we are not going to connect from any Windows client, NFS is the correct option instead of SAMBA, am I right?

ermano i have some questions .. when u installed first time linux and what is your experience on linux in gernal .. i am wondering ..
@eflinux4 жыл бұрын
The first time was back in the 90's, but it wasn't a great experience. I came back to Linux last year, and I am enjoying it ever since. Linux is a wide space with many things, so it is easy to get lost sometime. Because of that I focused on Arch. I enjoy building my system, but I like the fact that new users have so many possibilities to start with Linux. You can go from the total noob to a system engineer. It is an amazing world for me :)

I learn a lot from you. Thank you. Merci beaucoup! / Danke! / Tack! I never knew about _netdev; good to know. I was just thinking about that situation right when you mentioned it. I have the same problem with an external HD that I connect via a USB port. When I don't have the external HDD connected, the system does not boot, because it's looking for that HDD. I wonder if _netdev works for local disks, too. It seems for the local disk drive that may or may not be attached (plugged in), the options are auto,nofail
How can I mount locally a directory that reside on another linux machine on the LAN network without using NFS?

autofs

I was going to say sshfs and autofs, but I personally prefer autofs, is a little easier to configure and works flawlessly.

13:45 ... Suggesting to change permissions to a directory to allow everyone to write on it is NOT a best practice and can bring to a potential security flaw. It should be correctly managed using correct users and group access policy and setting GID on the parent directory.
@eflinux4 жыл бұрын
Sure, as I said in the video, this is on a local network, there’s no worry there. If you’re doing this on a corporate server then definitely with different permissions.
@GooogleGoglee4 жыл бұрын
@@eflinux yes, still I think promoting good practice everywhere is still always preferable. I wanted to leave my voice there if some curious user wanted to dig into it more deeply.

@GooogleGoglee4 жыл бұрын
@@eflinux thank you and thanks for the answers I have a Curiousity regarding these 2 approaches: can you map the same shared directories on the server with NFS and Samba at the same time?
@eflinux4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried that, but I doubt it. If a directory Is already mounted via one service or the other, the mount for the other service will probably fail.
