Another masterpiece, and once again about my obsession, Peruvian history and culture. This video also gives me more evidence for two of my pet theories on the topic. The first being, that Peruvian cultures should be thought of more like Greek city states. They shared so much with each other, to see each ruin as being representative of a different society is silly. I also believe Chavin de Huantar and Caral disprove assumptions made about the importance of religion or farming in the creation of civilization. I believe these sites show that commerce and trade are the bedrock upon which all other human endeavours are based.

Just bought myself some Viracocha art today in Cusco, Peru. All because of following Ed in the last few months. I wish I learned more about Mayan culture before I visited Palenque and Tikal as a 20 year old. But, that trip brought me here too. I am a mineral exploration geologist, and I find myself increasingly interested in how I could bring my knowledge and love of geology/mineral deposits, to the world of archaeological exploration. Thank you for the podcast!!!

I get the idea of using the term principal diety vs monotheism because of the exclusivity we assume because of Christianity, Islam, Judaism. But mostly I think that religious structure needs a new term since it at least exists also in vodou (and honestly as a catholic I’d say certain traditions certainly have the same structure)

Hay Ed, I was married to a female fanged Deity

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! I may need to just listen more carefully, but where can we find the names of these various incarnations of the fanged deity?
@eeayquetting59632 ай бұрын
From Google: Aiapæc, or “Maker”, the creator god of the Moche civilization, depicted as a fanged deity in the murals (1) at Huaca de la Luna, an adobe temple outside Trujillo in northern Peru.

Hi there Ed, Excellent episode as always! But it makes me wonder... do you believe that this Fanged Deity is the same feline figure in the ancient Olmec representations of people transforming into fanged jaguars and if so do you think the Olmec religion might have also been monotheistic and brought to them by "evangelists" from the Amazon?

I love your work, Ed. Very enjoyable and gives me the pre-Columbian fix I need to feed my obsession. I picked up one of your calendar's and cannot wait for it to arrive! I'll be keeping an eye out for your book on the fanged diety! Your idea of linking all Pan-Andean society through the fanged deity is just spot on, really. I've found trying to learn about the various cultures and the overall timeline of the region somewhat confusing, as I've always noticed the similarities between them, but never have I read a lot of research into linking them through the art of this one particular representation, or any other means for that matter. Likewise, your approach to the Inca gods is the most cohesive I have heard. There is much confusion around their religion when a lot of published material lists things such as lightning to be a God, or as you explained, the Sun, to be almost on the same level as Viracocha. While Cobo does use the word "god" to describe the Sun and claims the Inca venerated it as such, this is only after he explains that Viracocha did in fact create the Sun and as a "secondary cause".

Ayahuasca up the nose?! It’s the second time I hear Ed mention this, but i’ve only ever heard of it drunk as a liquid. This video is 3 years old and in his Lex Friedman podcast appearance which is what brought me to his YT he also mentions it and that is only recently. I wonder if it’s just true or he knows it’s wrong but often by mistake uses the name ayahuasca instead of some other amazonian drugs that are used up the nose like rapé?

Edit: Looked it up and obviously the professor was correct haha😆 Was just so shocked since I never heard about it and it’s such a fkn popular thing to talk about, yet still this is my first time hearing it🤯🥰

Had to comment again, sorry… Another artistic or religious element that connects all Peruvian cultures through time is the Chakana, or Incan Cross. I’ve see that symbol every where, from Tiwanaku to Nazca to Trujillo.
@archaeoedpodcast3 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren. Yes, it is an important symbol. Common thought is that it's the symbol of the three tiered Andean cosmos. I've never seen the Nazca examples you mention. I would like to, so perhaps you could provide a reference?
@warrendourond72363 жыл бұрын
@@archaeoedpodcast sorry Ed, the more I think about it, the more I think it was in Paracas, not Nazca. It was on a ceramic vessel in a museum, and I remember when I saw it thinking that maybe all these coastal societies were far more linked to each other. I’m married to a Peruvian, and have been there for a month or more each year for over 15 years. We dedicate a week each trip to exploring Peruvian Archaeology. Immersing myself in Peruvian culture, I can believe the Andean people were monotheistic previous to colonialism. This world, heaven and hell could be seen as the three planes of existence of the Chakana. I believe the similarities between Catholic and Indigenous Peruvian religion might be why so few elements of the old religion remain in Peru. Unlike Mexico, where many old beliefs have been infused into Christian ceremonies and holidays. I will share your video with some of my English speaking in-laws. I am sure this theory will blow their minds. Thanks for what you do, it’s what I’d be doing if given a second chance.
