The Archbishop of Paris, Mons. Laurent Ulrich had the brilliant idea of asking the French government, led by Emanuel Macron, for the 19th century stained glass windows, by Viollet-le-Duc, to be replaced with contemporary stained glass windows.
These stained glass windows from Viollet-le-Duc were not damaged by the fire on April 15, 2019. They are in perfect condition. In other words, they would take advantage of the renovation to remove older elements from the building and replace them with new ones. The archbishop's idea, as he himself said, is to leave the mark of the 21st century on the cathedral.
Emanuel Macron loved the idea, and announced that the windows in six of the seven chapels in the south nave would be replaced with contemporary stained glass, as requested by the Archbishop of Paris.
It is true that the medieval stained glass windows no longer exist in Notre-Dame, having been destroyed during the Revolution, but the stained glass windows that Viollet-le-Duc created to replace them in the 19th century sought to harmonize with the building, trying to fit in. to the fullest with the Gothic style and yet not quite achieving it.
