I've just finished reading Michael Wood's In Search of the Dark Ages, and seeing physical evidence from the Anglo Saxon period digs really brings things to life. The Roman stuff does, of course, continue to fascinate.

WOW, someone else who's read that book, I bought it when it came out new (1981), a year or so after the TV series on the BBC. It was my inspiration to follow archaeology and in fact I did my first dig the first year after the series was on. The TV series is on DVD (haven't got a copy myself) but it was amazing to hear some speaking 'anglo-saxon' english

And those sling balls were basically nothing to them.. and to us, they are history. It’s truly amazing.

I watch a Thames mudlarking channel where mostly clay pipes are found; this was a common disposable item, like a cigarette butt.

I'd say they were a bit more than nothing as you said. They were ammunition to defeat their enemy which is much more than mere nothing.

Seriously why do you post the same episodes over and over again with different titles? I don’t know why I even click on them anymore knowing everything this channel posts has been posted many times before. They are just in it for the advertisement money.

Great show, and educational. But seems like a lot of archeology involves speculation re interpretation of found items :)

Very true. Modern humans do not have the same life experiences as ancient people, which influenced their behavior and thought processes. We cannot see through their eyes.

Of course it is,we weren't there,so it's all up to interpretation of the finds,100 yrs from now, someone might discover that they got it all wrong

They are very educated guesses based on years of knowledge and experience.

Yes, that is called hypothesis.

Archaeology is not an exact science, as such. It does, necessarily, involve informed interpretation.
