I'm pretty sure the show came out before the modern ISIS, it's an acronym referencing an Egyptian Goddess; the Russian counterpart is called ODIN after the Norse God.

As I recall, the terrorist group, ISIS, became more well known as the show was getting popular, and writers had to kind of "write themselves away" from the moniker, so that viewers wouldn't get the wrong idea.

Tbh i thought they called it that on purpose as a joke and I always respected archer for doing that, but the god/goddess thing makes more sense 😅

As I'm 56, you guys are likely "too young" to notice some of the other references in the show. I didn't realize them until I'd seen some ep's a few times. Later, after Cheryl Tunt changes her name yet again & doesn't remember previous names, Pam whispers to Archer, "She doesn't remember any of it," which is from "The Exorcist." There's also much reference in later seasons to the '78 movie "The Boys from Brazil," which you likely missed when it was on TV (w/snarling Dobermans). There's also a huge nod to "The 6 Million Dollar Man," which thrilled us '70s kids w/its intro, "We can make him better, stronger, faster," & the music used in the opening sequence is used, too. This is why "Archer" massages my nostalgia buttons again & again! I'm glad you enjoy it! :-)

Let the kid keep watching btw, the shows a bit older at this point and it's interesting to see how younger people from now respond to it. That's what fun about reactions, seeing how different demographics and life experiences process media from different time periods. Like I love horror reactions because they never scare me but I get to see the effect they're meant to have on some people. For example, There's a Halloween (1978) reaction where the reactor is visibly terrified the whole runtime and it was fascinating becuase it was a window into what people felt in those first screenings without all the knowledge of what the franchise became. Hi Guys! I"m glad you're enjoying the show! Its creator used to parody old TV shows, & knowing this tells it all. "The Shazam/Isis Hour" was my Favorite show on '70s TV when I was a kid (I'm 56 now), my guess is that ISIS pays homage to that. That's a good bet, b/c in later seasons the team hooks up w/Michael Grey (sp), who played Billy Batson, who transform into Cap'n Marvel by yelling "Shazam!" This is why I can never get into the "Shazam" movies of today, b/c they just don't capture the thrill from back then. Later episodes clearly borrow from an "I Dream of Jeannie" cartoon (also my Favorite in 1st grade!), titled "Jeannie," which had a goofy jr genie with an Ali Baba cap & who couldn't do anything right, named Babu (Baboo?). Later episodes have an ocelot (a kind of feral cat) named Babu, & my guess is the show's creator named it after that character. :-)

Yes, the earlier seasons were before ISIS - the terrorist organisation - was "a thing". Several seasons down the line they do change the name, due to the real-life negative connotation. Downtown Abbey also used the name Isis for the pet dog in the show, and they ended up killing her off for the same reason😭😭

Archer’s mom didn’t say anything racist. She said “black ops field agent”. She paused after the word “black” and her employees thought she was going in a different direction, but she didn’t say anything inappropriate in that regard.

What time period is this? Whatever the heck they feel like- the spy stuff/KGB/etc could be 60s/70s/80s, but the technology is more modern day- the cultural/historical references are all over the place- let’s just call it “Archerverse” time like it’s an alternate world or something lol

If it helps, I liked seasons 1-9 best. Season 8 deserves an award of its own, since it's clearly a classic, & places the "Archer" characters in a 1940s Philip Marlowe detective story, & it was truly GREAT! It truly blew me away as it captured the feel & plotting of such stories excellently. After S9 the show lost its magic (I don't remember S10, as I only saw it once, but saw the others multiple times). It was obvious once creator Adam Reed left, b/c the banter wasn't as good & the literature/film references weren't there. My favorite episodes have to be the "Vision Quest" one, when Archer takes Pam to a wedding, & when Archer gets a tattoo. This last one made me laugh so hard I blacked out! I laughed hard w/Ep2 when Cyril used Trinette to protect himself from the ice. And there's a snappy bit of dialog between Lana & Trinette in the latter episodes of S8 ("Dreamland") that had me laughing hard. So hang in there! The characters grow on you, which is why the current & final S14 is so disappointing. But it was a great ride for S1-9! :-)
