I have no idea why events such as archery are still run as men's and women's events separately. They seem equally adept, and especially as the wight of the men's and maybe the women's bows is 35lbs which a healthy child can pull. An example of this is that in Henry VIII's day a war bow pulled up to 160lbs. That has been proven with intact bows raised from the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 on her way to war with France, (which, of course, the English won....largely due to the longbow).
@dick-gs9tb4 жыл бұрын
There are no draw weight limits on olympic bows. Mauro Nespoli of Italy, for example, is shooting well over 60 lbs. Being able to handle a heavier draw weight gives you a significant advantage since you're less likely to interfere with the string upon release. It also gives you an advantage when shooting in the wind. A lower draw weight means you need to aim off more, which in turn increases your margin of error - very well illustrated in some of the matches seen here, where the archers overcompensated and were harshly punished for it. I don't see the relevance of your comparison with English longbows either. Those had a role on the battlefield more similar to artillery and were rarely used for precision shots like these. The techniques of shooting them are vastly different. The 160 lbs of a longbow is its peak draw weight, at which it's held only for a split second before releasing. Recurve bows have a more even draw force curve and olympic archers spend far longer at full draw, some even ten seconds or more.
