After watching this video for the 50th time, it just hit me how decently synergetic Vendreads are....and how most of their traps actually have a point to being traps. Reunion in particular strikes me as impressive, considering as a Trap card it can be used on the opponent's turn. This gives a few huge benefits if you pull it off. 1: The effect refreshes the graveyard. Since the card takes banished cards then tributes them, those cards then go directly to the graveyard rather than banishing them again, refueling your effects. 2: Gives you a Speed 2 Ritual Summon that you can probably use to your advantage....though there aren't many Ritual Vendreads with effects that actually matter in that regard, so mostly you just get a body out of nowhere. 3: The tributes brought back are face down. Now, alot of meta decks could care less about that due to destruction of any card being common, but it does give them a level of protection since a great many cards only effect face-up cards on the field. Meaning the play can't actually be intercepted. Now in the modern environment this is obviously not great, but as someone working on a card game of my own, this is very interesting design to witness.
@seanr.64983 жыл бұрын

You know, it occurs to me this deck was designed with an emphasis placed on a "Build-a-boss" playstyle in mind. You summon the inheritance effects you want your ritual monster to have, then summon him with battle effects + whatever you tributed. Nightmare almost makes sense in this regard, letting you summon just 1 monster and boosting its level so you can easily get the lvl you need. And increasing levels by +1 per cost is a consistent way to get the exact level you need. Unfortunately for the game it's in this playstyle cannot exist. Youd need a combo to create the boss you want, a combo 90% of decks you play against will negate as hard as they can cause combos are responsible for the cancer of solitaire boards that had consumed this game. But even as a madman who can actually see value in Nights, it seems pathetically designed. If I was designing Nights for yugioh, I'd have the effect be "Target a monster on the field and shuffle as many of your banished zombie monsters as you want into your deck. The targeted monster gains levels equal to the number of monsters shuffled into your deck. Vendread Ritual monsters gain 1000 atk if they declare an attack. If your Vendread Ritual monster destroys a monster by battle, you can special summon a non-ritual Vendread monster from your deck."

Honestly vendread were and still kind of are one of my favorite ritual decks. Though, it's honestly more do to aesthetics than anything else. I feel like there's some thing you could push to really make the deck good. Maybe some way to still get the tribute effects from the non-ritual vendrewds without them being on the field. Or maybe new spells that supplement the minus of banishing all those zombies. Or maybe just new rituals. I think there is something that can help them and if its story that they're worried about then kind of just style it as like a post story for the whole Vendread Crisis. I imagine stuff like evil scientist trying to recreate the Vendread, maybe some human characters trying to hunt down the remaining Vendread that are being watched over by Slayer. I mean I'll take anything really if it means more awesome zombie cards

I guess I'll be "that guy" and say that they're underrated. Especially considering the pre-Undead World Structure deck. The biggest problem befalling all zombie decks is acceleration. Psy-framelord Omega -> Pass doesn't cut it anymore, and without opening some specific 3 or 4 card combos, that's the best you'll be opening. Seriously, zombie decks were running Call of the Mummy just to get things onto the field. This is where Vendreads come in. The biggest strength of the archetype is low opportunity cost, letting you slam monsters onto the field and set up the graveyard without consuming the normal summon. The ability for the vendreads to continually mill zombies and float into other ritual spells lets you throw out a few of ritual monsters to compliment whatever plays you want to make. Level 6 for vampires and for spectralsword, and all of the effect monsters summoning themselves means the deck is good at linking up. A Slayer that banishes 2 cards every turn is surprisingly difficult to deal with, and it was the only source of monster disruption outside of Shiranui Samurai that zombie decks had. Vendreads are also flexible, allowing you to go for either link plays, ritual monster swarm, or disruption effects all with the same resources. I'm speaking in past tense now, because Structure Deck R-Undead World came out. Now, there's only two zombie decks in the game: Balerdroch Turbo, and the Wrong Deck. However, I wouldn't say that Vendreads are bad still. Hell, Lithium2300 used the Vendread engine in his testing of Jack A' Boo and Clotheep, so you can see how it works. Vendreads are just another variant of Balerdroch turbo.

THANK YOU for bashing one of my favourite archetypes. It had a fantastic concept, best lore and artwork of most modern archetypes, and combination of Zombies and Rituals smells like a great combo, and that's the saving grace since it gets good benefit of good zombie and ritual support, too bad zombie world.deck is FAR better! it sucks to see that F.A, a deck I consider bad as well, got far better support than anything vendread got before they went to OCG, and was a playable decent deck. Vendread only saw competitive success due to firewall u-link plays, but it was niche and didn't get a lot of time to get the spotlight.

While it's at first weird that you summon Slayer by tributing the monsters that he is fighting, I feel it has more of an anime entrance aesthetic going on with it. You have a bunch of grotesque zombie monsters on the field, attacking anything that moves and spreading more chaos. Then they stop, shudder, the very core of their being drawn out of them and into a single point, towards a single presence that persists even spread amongst them. And Revendread Slayer appears, formed of their bodies into a full human, wiping the horde out by creating himself and absorbing their abilities to better enable his return. I get the idea he draws himself out of the cores of Vendreads because as we see from the Ritual spells, he arrives on the field by "consuming" or overcoming the Vendreads already scattered around. This can be assumed that he was worn down and killed and devoured, then once a sufficient event happens he forces himself back by consuming the cores of the mindless horde around him. Through force of will and the wrath of his vengence. And judging from Battlelord eating him then him returning, he can do this by drawing on surrounding Vendreads if the host of his presence is too strong for him to overcome. This is actually supported by Vendread ReOrigin, creating a token from an opponent's monster (in the story the Vendread's would be controlled by an opponent, his enemy) and forcing himself to appear on the field once again using their minions as his catalyst. Honestly this makes me love this archetype even more even from a flashy anime perspective as well as gameplay. And frankly makes me more mad that it is generally pretty trash as a Ritual Archetype.

Vendread Reunion is functionally supposed to represent a slain Slayer, zombies rising from the goo to terrorize the city again, only for Slayer to rise through them even faster this time cause hes getting better at it. It also shows just how the Vendread plague operates, combining then distributing itself into a horde again to get more flesh. Unfortunate the plague has in itself a Plague in the form of Slayer.
@clayxros5763 жыл бұрын
Battlelord's effect is functionally how he beats Slayer the first time. He stops Slayer from actually using his combative power and proceeds to rip him to shreds. Revolution is him devouring, then redistributing, Slayer back into the horde (shuffling the zombies that made up his body into the deck, thus the flesh mass that births vendread zombies.)
@clayxros5763 жыл бұрын
Vendread Evolution displays where Slayer finally defeats Battlelord, likely by simply returning and hammering them until they're blindsided and unable to stop the battle abilities of Slayer in time. That's why Executor comes to exist, he absorbs then gains resistance to Battlelord's stun effect. (In theory)
@clayxros5763 жыл бұрын
Vendread Nightmare, despite being a nightmare in terms of design, I'd guess represents how the final battle against the Anima clones went down. Every time he beat one he raised in level and power, until he finally let go of his vengeance and Daybreak occured. He doesn't die from this though. Savior is what Executor "links" into once he let's go of his vengeance. He embraces what hes become and uses the remaining Vendreads to become Savior, keeping the chaotic zombies under control while also controlling his own small group of zombies to keep his undeath going and protect the city he now calls home.
@clayxros5763 жыл бұрын
Honestly, theres room to make new additions to the archetype. Friendly vendreads that actively obey and help Savior with his new mission can easily be added, as well as a new zombie based threat or a new wave of Vendreads that threaten the city again. Why wasnt there a final boss in the vein of Anima? Cause Executor's "Nightmare" was so many of his wife's corrupted form constantly terrorizing him. He keeps trying to kill and absorb the body, to be one with her and finally at peace, but the body co tinue to appear. Likely the conciousness of Battlelord unable to reform but still having enough presence to torture him, maybe by using Slayer's own power to influence Vendread Cores to manifest the body. It could also be Slayer's own mind tormenting him due to the strength of his vengence at that point, forced into a nightmare where each of the surrounding Vendreads takes the form of his corrupted wife. With Battlelord destroyed, its influence could be gone, and allows his own mental instability to plague him. He finally achieves Daybreak by letting her go and ceasing control over the Vendreads, letting them rot and fade in the sunlight. He attacks no more since he has no more reason. The battle is over, now he mourns .

Honestly, it's a shame these cards didn't come out earlier. The fact it's effectively a dark hero story mixed with Zombies could've made for a nice counter to Jaden and his more traditional Marvel style heroes. Could've easily seen a main antagonist rocking these cards and that likely would've resulted in the Vendreads getting a crap load of support.

That said, being a guy who plays Duel Links whenever I am not home and I have small fragments of free time, I use this arcitype in a way where I effectivly try force it to be good. Do I lose a lot? I think making a swarm of of future support could work and still stick with the vendread lore. If it was a prequel story detailing the history and progression of vendreads and ended with a field swarm card that doubled as a vendread outbreak you could really make something sweet out of this. The new cards are fine but this archetype needs more help than a flatlining patient who’s more life support than human so I think something better might be justified.

SO JUST HEAR ME OUT ON THIS, A field spell that allows the Ritual monster to gain the effects that the pringles monsters give, if they are used from the HAND OR GRAVEYARD. Once per turn for "balance", and an on activation or destruction effect that can return some number of your banished cards to the graveyard. I mean, I get what they were trying to go for with Vendread. A Ritual based archetype where you use materials on the field to give your newly summoned monster special bonuses, where you can then use those ritual monsters as material for further ritual plays, climbing your monsters until you have your ultimate boss monster Vendread Slayer who stomps your opponent in battle to win. The problem with that idea is that it is based around the worst special summoning mechanic in the game and does not do anything to alleviate the burdens that come with said mechanic. The concept of a ritual climbing archetype based around a zombie outbreak where a dude becomes the Wish-version of Spawn to take revenge against the hordes that killed his wife is an awesome idea in theory. It's just a shame they fumbled it so hard.
@CatManThree Жыл бұрын
Ritual Climbing is not at all an idea within the archetype beyond Chimera. The deck is more based around using ritual materials to give boss monsters effects, alongside facilitated recovery, expention, and beatdown through banishing expended resources dumped to the graveyard
