The fact that the theory emerges out of clinical experience makes it so much more applicable and relatable than if it were through "factor analysis". In fact it would have probably been impossible to get to such depth with simple statistics. It begs the question what has mainstream science even become. The illustrative case studies that are presented bring so much life and clarity of the theory as well! I also really like Prof. Goodwyn's engaging and clarifying questions. Great discussion, as always!

Petar, you're so right. Clinically derived theory doesn't get the recognition it deserves--it often is seen as "anecdotal" or not "evidence based", the latter of which has become a buzzword for CBT-enthusiasts (or should I say "prefects"). But the sad truth is that you can only go so far with laboratory study. As useful as it is, there is no substitute for a keen and disciplined mind making insights based on everyday work.

I liked the discussion about how the ego inflation was a useful tool for survival in a certain context. It seems like we always discuss it as a bad thing without talking about why it's there and how it's helped us survive in a pinch. Very insightful
@theimaginarium2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely--ego inflation has its place, too, doesn't it?

Would narcissism be considered ego inflation? If so, I could see why it was/is a survival tool in my current culture.

Hi Alexis V, if its 'adaptive' through response to developmental challenges, then it fits the description. If its genetic, and simply runs without contradiction, then the Ego isn't inflated, as its tolerances are set as they are. Kindest Regards, Steve🙏,

At 1:09:30, talking about the man who was suffering from feelings of guilt for not attempting to save his friends and potentially sacrificing himself in a wartime situation, Steve describes how if the man could go back to being a little boy and acting out that situation in play, he would indeed sacrifice himself for his friends, and confirm to himself that he is capable of such an act. It brings to mind how an 'enactment' of such a situation for the man as he is today as an adult, in a safe and controlled yet natural way, could have very positive therapeutic effects, in being able to act out the intended instinct for altruistic sacrifice, and bring a kind of resolution and closure to an event that wasn't properly instinctually resolved. To be honest, while listening to this part of the video, I even felt deeply the man's situation for myself, in the sense of having missed the chance to do the instinctually right thing in one situation, and feeling guilty for that, but to reconnect to that feeling and enacting that willingness to put myself in danger to help others, brings a kind of energized but grounded, confirming feeling from within. Would this be an good example where a therapeutic 'enactment' could be used? Thank you very much for this video Dr. Goodwyn, Steve and Pauline!

Hi Nathan, this process as you know is taught on the IPSA Professional Training Course. To answer your question, in theory, it would, but, it would need very carefully preparation so as not to re-traumatise the veteran. That preparation would involve everything normally in place for an Enactment process, regarding a hand picked professional team of experienced Depth Psychologists, a full and comprehensive case history and a safe and controlled venue, appropriate family, social and medical/psychiatric support, including perhaps a chaperone, with of course fully informed consent. The time and care in building up rapport with the psyche, which would involve all preparatory explorations with, and confirmations from, the unconscious. The gradual introduction of the Meta-Instincts into relationship to the Ego, way ahead of any ‘IPSA Enactment’ protocol, would be essential. The management of the homeostatic process of Affect would be crucial. The eventual form the Enactment took, would be determined by this careful and incremental preliminary process. It could be accomplished without physical Enactment, if, the necessary safe ‘Vas’ has been built through rapport with the unconscious. So, Enactment should only ever be offered if it is indicated and agreed upon, teleologically, from within the psyche of the patient. Kindest Regards, Steve🙏

@@JungToLiveBy Thank you for the reply, I see there is a lot that needs be done a long time before an Enactment might take place. Thanks Steve for taking the time to describe this in detail.

Yes, I have been making this distinction in my work too, but Steve and Pauline really have this nailed down in a sharply defined way. And since I am a huge fan of conceptual precision, I have already told them I will be stealing this way of labeling the two modes of fantastical thought.

Unbelievable discussion. This one really encapsulates what separates IPSA from traditional depth psychology schools as well as the emerging field of Neuropsychoanalysis. You guys go so much further than anyone and we have Goodwyn, as well as others, to thank for putting in the rigorous research needed to put this model on a solid biological foundation. One question I have is you use the term “Janetian complexes” a lot. Is Jungs research on complexes included within that? I’m assuming it is since Jung was essentially further developing Janet’s ideas with his word associations, but just want to make sure I’m understanding the term correctly.
@JungToLiveBy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake, we use the term ‘Janetian Complexes’ to distinguish between those originating in a dissociation of, or from, usual Ego-consciousness, and those that are better described as ‘Deep Structure’ Complexes, as per recent videos. Janet didn’t use the term ‘unconscious’ instead, anticipating 21st century developments, he introduced the term ‘sub-conscious’ to delineate extensions of consciousness away from normal-awareness. Janet did not use the term ‘Complex’ but instead ‘sub-nuclei.’ Functionally it denotes the same thing when considered as what we call ‘Janetian Complexes.’ Jung borrowed heavily from Janet, but later failed to give him due credit. Thanks again for your kind words, kindest Regards, Steve🙏

20 mins, is that mean that the psyche of the individual sort of gets ready to release a pulse of energy when it gets over it first causing the shock oxf the shadow?
@JungToLiveBy2 жыл бұрын
Hi again E Jenkins, the main thing to remember is that the psyche is embedded in a quantum biopsychosocial continuum, that is regulated homeostatically, so yes, expect any number of informational and energetic pulses, and regulations, Kindest Regards, Steve and Pauline 🙏🙏

Hi JungToLiveBy, was wondering if you can speak on psychasthenia and anxiety related to introversion. I feel as though I am greatly anxious due to being heavily introverted and was wondering on a solution, Thanks
@JungToLiveBy2 жыл бұрын
Hi dd cakez, psychaesthenia is an uncommon term these days. I’d be careful of bundling concepts like that with self-modelling of yourself as being anxious and ‘heavily introverted.’ If you feel you are that way, then make sure you have appropriate medical and therapeutic support, locally, to you. With that in place, there’s a lot of online peer support available from people undergoing a journey of personal development. Kindest Regards, Steve🙏

This reminds me of Celtic and Germanic myths of pregnant warrior women like Freydis Eriksson or Macha of Ulster, a goddess who outran the King's horses in a chariot race while "heavy with child". The act killed her, but she cursed the Ulstermen as she died and gave all the warriors pregnancy pains, leaving the kingdom defenseless from the Connaughtmen, at which point the young Cú Chulainn had to step up and defend the kingdom singlehandedly. Moral of the story: do NOT disrespect momma...a quintessentially Irish sentiment!
